I very much enjoyed the game. The art style holds up nicely, the ambiance sounds and soundtracks are pleasant.
The only complaints I remember having being that some segments overstay their welcome

Pretty much this. It's a solid game and takes a while to casually play through, so it feels like it's worth the money. Some parts seem to drag on for a while, which made me abandon my 100% attempt. I don't feel like the game wasted or disrespected me time though.

First game was full of SOVL and it was an underrated absolute masterpiece, I played through it 5 times and I have it installed RN, second game was a complete piece of shit trash that felt painful to play through even once.

Was Alice Madness Returns really that bad? Only played the first game

No, it isn't, it's what og Alice should be with more money and graphic

The very first thing you notice when you start the game is that it not only uses Unreal Engine, but also PhysX, which is an ancient as shit and unoptimized particle system. They also cranked it to twice as much as it would be normal so you have to begin by INI editing to get decent-ish FPS even on a modern PC.

Enemies are boring as 90% of them come in a variety of goo + doll parts, there are only like 5 weapons in the game, and none of them have alt fire, movement, camera handling, and controls are borderline unplayable (seriously, it can't be overstated how awfully the game handles), the music is OK, the same 3 puzzles get repeated through the game on 10 different occasions, same for the 3 minigames, gone is the quirkyness of the first game, and it's replaced by hamfisted drama, instead of exploring the maps because they are genuinely interesting you MUST explore copy-pasted rooms 100 times over (WHICH OFTEN HAVE TANK CONTROLS) to get the collectibles to upgrade your weapons and some useless extra content. There are no boss fights save for a last one, really, everything that have made the first game likable was replaced by mediocre, repetitive shit sprinkled with the modern game industry standard cancer DLC spam, collectibles, and generally speaking, appealing to the lowest common denominator of players.

In addition, basic gameplay itself is extremely repetitive, and once you've played it for one hour, you have seen it all... despite the game still having 7 hours more content. Melee combat is.. sort of improved. It's more fluid and flashier, but at the expense of allowing the player to find their own solutions to combat situations using a wide variety of tools...there is one and only one way of tackling most enemies other than the lowliest trashmobs. For ranged combat (pepper spray) you must use the built-in aimbot because when you try to free aim, the game tunes down your mouse sensitivity to the level that you can't turn at all basically. The built-in aimbot plays the game for you.

I'd say the game had one and only one segment when it had something approaching the atmosphere of the first one, which is the queen's castle, but still, the rest is unsalvagable shit.

It's not like first game's weapon variety was spectacular either.
          >4 variations on slow projectile weapon
          >2 hardly different melee weapons
          >a bomb with basically the same alt fire
          >flamethrower in all but name
          >autowin homing thing
          >useless gimmick
          >2 variations on a BFG

Nah, definitely not. I don’t recommend playing it on harder difficulties though as all it does is make enemies into bullet-sponges. Normal was good enough without the need for extra padding.

The art direction is great in every way, everything related to the visuals is superb, but gameplay and level design are extremely uninspired and feel like a slog to get through.

I only like the madness returns because it’s actually fun to play. I like the platforming.

damn, it took 4 posts until a brain damaged coomer posted, impressive.

anyways, I thought the game was mediocre. it has only the art style going for it, which for some reason gets a pass while being a graphics gay doesn't.

the game's problem is that its gameplay butter is stretched very, very thin over a huge loaf of bread, the bread being levels. most of the levels are very long and will rely on repetition of the same platforming, and have you chew through the same enemies a lot. it spices this up by throwing in some unique levels, but some of those faceplant horribly like the 2d platformer section in the mysterious east level, while others were great and enjoyable, like Alice drinking the magic potion in the castle.

the story didn't have much beats until the end, but at that, it was just a revelation instead of a significant change of pace. there was also some significantly disappointing turns through the game, like going through the huge factory, and the final boss anticlimactically gets defeated in a cutscene without a fight.

Playing it on the hardest difficulty setting really made it a lot more fun because it forces you to figure out hard counters for most of the enemies. I agree though; there’s a lot of bizarre and underutilized shit in the game like the invisibility power up and the grasshopper one.

First game has one of my favorite artstyles of any game ever, amazing weapons but a slightly dodgy health/ammo system. Haven't played the sequel yet. Talked to American McGee when he did an AMA a couple years back, cool dude.

game looked cool but levels/platforming, and fighting encounters were mediocre. it didn't feel like there was a difficulty curve to make it more fun. the most basic enemy was in the game from start to end and i feel like there should have been something more, especially since the teapot grenade made fighting groups pretty easy.
