What does "video game preservation" mean to you?

What does "video game preservation" mean to you?

To me, it is:
Source code preservation (and released to the public).
Publicly available (free and open-source) emulators (on PC).
High quality scans of manuals, cover art, vidya magazines, advertising, press material, hardware documentation.
Accurate dumps of released video games, prototypes, review builds, press CDs, DVDs.
Preservation of (free and open-source) software related to game development (engines, frameworks, middleware, SDKs).
Accurate rips of VHS tapes and film reels.

Something that I don't consider relevant at all regarding preservation:
Legal commercial availability.

With blizzard dying, surely there will be at least one person brave enough to leak the source.

I think more than source code it's important that games always have a means of being fully playable. I'd say with the right controllers and on original hardware, but as a guy who isn't looking to spend 1000 dollars so Pat the NES punk can scalp some bullshit like town and country 2 and I can play trash.

This obsession with the past is unhealthy. Games shouldn't be preserved, they should be actively made unplayable to make way for newer games.

There's no reason to go back to any game older than 5 years.

It's on par with the dumbfrick redditor who wiped an Xbox development kit into a case for his gaming pc.

It means that the people who have a copy of a rare game actually fricking dump it online and don't hoard it until the disk/board/etc rots away and dies

    >What does "video game preservation" mean to you?
It means a game is playable in the future if the means exist for it.
Even if it is not 1:1 accurate like a lot of dos games through dosbox, emulation etc.
    >material outside of the game like screenshots, footage, etc.
means nothing. That's like saying london after midnight isn't a lost film because a ton of production stills exist

Do you think the disc would've been returned to Blizzard if the disc was found during Blizzard's sexual harassment lawsuit / SJW censorship arc?
