I get what they were going for but it looks so weird in 60 fps.
He was experimenting with different player models for the game, such as Black Steve
IIRC he actually hired someone to design new characters for the game (first person to have ever worked on Minecraft besides Notch himself), but Notch is too much of an incompetent programmer to actually implement the animations, so he gave up.
"Black Steve" (and the other two characters besides Rana) were only in the game for like 1 or 2 versions. I remember killing one of them was the only way to obtain flint & steel, which you had to do because you needed to make a fire to smelt iron (furnaces weren't implemented yet).
