What exactly is the appeal of rhythm games?

There's no strategy or any complicated thinking you need to do in order to play a rhythm game (unlike an RTS). All you do is just memorize the mapping of a few songs and mash buttons in accordance to said songs like some sort of monkey. It's insane how overrated the genre actually is.

I like fast paced, twitchy and simple games. I find them fun, exhilarating and paradoxically soothing.

Rhythm games, Shmups and Precision Platformers connect with me.

JSAB is adjacent to B.T VOID but aside from autorunners being similar to RUNNER I can't find any that scratch a similar itch.

For me it's fun because it's the next closest to "feeling" a song and jamming to it without actually playing it on an instrument. It's even not possible to play many of the parts at once on actual instruments like how rhythm games can present them, unless your adept at piano or classical guitar. It obviously depends on the song too.

The appeal is that nearly 90% of the population is female, younger than you, stupider than you. Remember that video of the guy shitting himself and his mother throwing a hissyfit? He was playing a video game. Yet he could not go to the bathroom on time.

Okay so basically when you're learning a rhythm game towards the upper difficulties you stop seeing notes as individual units or even large chunks and instead entire sequences of patterns get codified into muscle memory. There are only so many inputs possible so you can balance between training recognition with other things like stamina, accuracy or tap speed. Also if you get good at one rhythm game you can transfer your skills to another, the same way learning one instrument makes it easier to pick up another.

I play rock band with friends because it's fun to listen to good music and play games at the same time.
Only friends who have a high time preference seem to not enjoy it because they can't git gud.
A lot of them are not interested in trying new instruments or having any challenge whatsoever.
Meanwhile my roommate and I play on expert and shred, and they sit there bored wondering why they aren't having fun hitting 1 note every 3 seconds.
    I dunno, skill issue.

following the rhythm and pressing buttons quickly with positive reinforcements is one of the quickest ways to put me in zen mode.

Guitar Hero doesn't even start until expert. On the lower difficulties you're just hitting notes that vaguely resemble the song, but on expert you need to strum and tap along with the beat of the music.
You don't really memorize songs, you gain muscle memory for note patterns which you can use for any other song with a similar pattern.
It's addictive. It's like dancing but with your fingers.

Btw, the Guitar Hero games play pretty well in rpcs3. I've been going through Van Halen for the first time.

When it finally clicks and you're reading the chart like sheet music and actually understand the motion the game wants you to do, it's pretty fun, almost like jamming with other musicians to create a cool tune together.

Anyone who ever used the "le gameplay" argument is arguing for rhythm games. Rhythm games are the only genre of game that is gameplay only in its purest form.

I can only speak for myself, but the appeal is that you just pick it up and play
no remembering your build, where you are, what the story is, your equipment, none of that shit
just boot it up, grab your controller, pick a song and play, whether it's for 20 minutes or 2 hours

Any rhythm games with bad design you guys have found?
    Hextech mayhem comes to mind.

Most rhythm games have either UI indicators or in-Game/environmental indicators for beats you have to hit.
This game couldn't decide and just did both, as a result I feel like it's an unreadable visual mess to look at.
the contrast between the more subtle in-game markers and the very distracting UI shit is too much.

    >complicated thinking
but lots of it depends of how good are you at find patterns
very low aproach rate in any rhythm game can melt the brain 99% of average players, depends of how fast is your brain in process what do you see while trying to follow the rhythm and not just smashing, also polyrhythm songs can also filter 99% of players.

It can't be overstated how moronic the average person is.
Hi-Fi rush doesn't even require you to memorise patterns.
All you have to do is hit on beat, the games definition of "on beat" is way too generous to the point where it's harder to hit off beat.
and still all these morons complained that they couldn't play on rhythm and it was too hard.

Most strategy games are all about memorizing what different units/buildings/upgrades do and then following those strands of memory. Chess is purely a memory game despite what low iq monkeys think.

RTS games are all about muscle memory and brain muscle memory. If you've got your production keys all hotkeyed you're basically going to do well despite playing for 12 hours straight and brain half shut down. The moment you scout out what the enemy is building you already have a counter in mind which you've rehearsed hundreds of times.
