What external hard drives does?

What external hard drives does Ganker keep their vidya on? I can't decide between buying a seagate or western digital.

No Seagate are not fine. I use both and only had issues with Seagate.

I have WD external HD going 10 years working fine.

I've had a seagate for 9 years now and it's fine. It all comes down to bad batches. There's no difference in consumer solutions across the big brands.

I have everything on 4 2tb nvme SSDs. Three of them are in a windows raid with the 4th being the windows partition because setting all 4 as one refused to work. I realize this arrangement will be hell if even one of the drives fails but it's all torrented shit anyway, all I'll really lose are save games and 99% of that is stuff I'm never actually going to play again anyway.

I honestly have no idea how my motherboard is able to run 4 NVMes and a high end graphics card. I would guess that several of them are sharing lanes, but whatever it works for my purposes.

I'm eyeing up 2 Western Digital ones. I already have a few Seagate/WD external drives already, both are fine.

I hate those flat fricking drives on the right WD has been using. I bought 3 different ones at different sizes from different years and they all have the exact same problem. The transfer speed slows down to a crawl if you're moving large files or many files at once and it seems like its because they heat up faster. I put an ice pack next to them and they'll get normal speeds again but still slow down after awhile if I don't get another ice pack.

I don't know what the deal is with them but I have another older one which looks like the one on the left, doesn't have this problem. Its a bit fatter so I guess there's more air space or something. Other than that the drives on the right are fine if you're moving small files maybe something like 10GB or less. If you try to move everything all at once that exceeds that, you're fricked. We're talking days and weeks for it to finish. Even defragging or doing a full drive wipe will cause them to heat up and slow down.

i bought a 4tb wd black a couple of years ago since it was on sale and mainly use it for all my complete rom collections for various consoles as well as random games. never had any issues with it and its almost always plugged in even when im not playing again.
read/write speeds are good enough. these are all old games so putting them on anything faster will hardly make any difference.

    >I can't decide between buying a seagate or western digital.
honestly, just buy whatever is cheaper. youre almost always going to get someone that says one brand is going to be better than the other.
ive owned both segate and WD drives in the past and ive had equal luck with them.

Blacks are amazing. I have 4TB to play all my old and even new games. Never had issues with them.

Isn't the transfer rate complete ass compared to internal ones? Pretty sure it's for storing your anime or music instead

I never seen a difference. I transfer large games to external HD.. why would it matter when that HD is for back ups only.

I have two Seagates, both 4TB. They're about 4 and 5 years old. I should really start looking for replacements to back them up just in case.

Why would I waste internal ssd space on vidya?

I have no space in my PC for more hard drives. Externals work fine and I like to think of them as game cartridges

games load fine and work fine so i dont see the problem at all. not sure why that triggers you so much.

I got an 8tb internal WD drive and put it in an enclosure. Worked out cheaper.

I've got a couple of small USB 3 4tb drives. They're slow garbage.

I also have a 14tb enterprise internal drive, which is fantastic, far faster, but it is a little noisy. If I needed a lot of space I'd just NAS a bunch of them to a different room.

doesn't matter, they're so similar in performance & longevity now that it doesn't make a difference. i have a ton of both of those & toshiba/unionsine for my stuff

Buy both brands and also buy double for backups. I repeat, buy double for backups. You don't want to get caught with your pants down if you face an issue 4 years into your drives lifespan and have to pay for reparations.

      >buy double for backups
At that point you might as will just get a NAS and get internal drives instead. No sense in buying those shitty externals.
