It's a spectrum. I don't think you can boil it down to a single sentence. But if someone put a gun to my head, I'd say it's a failure of communication of the author's ideas either through inconsistency or gaps in logic. For example: I'm sure Sakamoto WANTED to write a story in Metroid: Other M about a Samus that found someone to not only respect but someone she can be soft and vulnerable with. Something that's rarely seen in the series. But there's way too many inconsistencies in how that idea is communicated in Other M. We never see the peak of their partnership or why Samus came to respect Adam in the first place. We don't see how well they work together. And the time they do work together, Adam is so antagonistic that it seems like he's trying to get Samus killed. Not to mention the plot holes of trying to pretend the Prime games never happened. So during the emotional slam dunk of Adam sacrificing himself in exchange for Samus, no one gives a frick. Because Sakamoto could not get us to see what he sees.
Maybe there's a version of Other M that's better written and could make this premise work. I doubt it but Sakamoto claims this game is perfect so we'll never know
The thumbs-up sign had been used by the Galactic Federation for ages. Me, I was known for giving the thumbs-down during briefing. I had my reasons, though. Commander Adam Malkovich was normally cool and not one to joke around, but he would end all of his mission briefings by saying, "Any objections, Lady?" He was joking, but others weren't. At the time I felt surrounded by people who treated me like a child or used kid gloves because I was a woman. And yet, with Adam, I was grateful for the nod. My past has left me with an uneasy soul, and as a result, it touched me on some level that Adam would acknowledge that past by calling something delicate, like "Lady." And I knew more than anyone that every word from Adam was deliberate. My thumbs-down was a twofold response: a sign of derision at being called a lady, and a signal of my complete understanding of the mission orders. The other soldiers were always willing to support me with easy smiles despite the fact that I clearly had so much yet to learn. Among them was Anthony. In the face of his well-meaning behavior, and that of the other soldiers, my response was to become increasingly bitter. I was a child, always with something to prove. A chip on my shoulder. And I was angry. I felt that if I let my guard down, I would easily be broken. And beyond that, I was scared. But even in the naiveté of my youth, I could see in Adam's joking manner how close he felt to me. Adam knows my past. And he knows me better than anyone else. Confession time. Because I was so young when I lost both of my parents, there's no question I saw Adam as a father figure. When I rebelled against him, I knew I could get away with it. And his paternal compassion in the face of my rebellion reinforced the special bond I felt with him. I understood well that chances were slim that I would ever find anyone that understood me like Adam. And yet, when the time came, I still left his side. I was so young. Young and naive...
>This was higher quality then whatever Bamco made according to Nintendo >Also according to Nintendo, you don't even know Bamco was making MP4 because they never told you.
Then they just gave them a studio. It's like they said "frick it we're tired of you micromanaging us just use the fricking thing". They've used them for everything else in the past since NES, but let them work on it for 3 years then just up and cancelled it? Like you work with these frickers consistently, don't you check on it periodicallyl?
If they just committed to allowing you to at least move around in 1st person mode and be able to switch back to 2.5D and complete the game either way, it wouldn't have gotten destroyed like it did. Or, it could have just not had any of the 1st person mode segments and just committed to being just a 2.5D game the whole way through and it would have been received much better.

The only one at Nintendo who knew what a "Bounty Hunter" was must have been the creator, Gunpei Yokoi. Which would be ironic.
Literally any David Cage game. Most Telltale games. Ironic since story is the only thing those games have going for them
I honestly don't get how Cage keeps getting money for more games. The stories are all legitimately, comically awful. Like so bad it's good shlock shit.

>We will never get to see the soulfull version where Samus acts like an autistic child soldier from a warrior tribe, but learns to mellow out and care for the people around her and eventually vow to protect them forever.
One of the best parts of Zero Mission was the 5 seconds total we saw of her reflecting on her childhood with the Chozo. Same guy who directed Other M apparently forgot about them despite keeping the Ridley destroying her home colony backstory.
I don’t know, Beyond Two Souls being needlessly told out of order literally contributed nothing to the story so I’d still say that it’s by far the worst told story
I played FFXIII once as a teen and the only thing I remember is a bunch of tacky fashion catalogue-looking Stacies and Chads pretending not to be sad, and a Black person tard-wrangling an autistic child trapped in the body of an Australian.
Legend of Dragoon for PS1, one of the worst jrpgs I’ve ever played and I’ve played all of them. Imagine the worst version of “we have final fantasy at home” you can, then give it a high budget, devs who don’t get why FF works at all, and twenty years of people online breathlessly praising it. It’s the absolute worst

Objectively FFXV, where writing is glaringly absent from the game so S-E could israelite you into consuming their movie anime and 2 season passes to fill the gaps of the games missing plot
Now I'm sure there are worse games out there I haven't played but call me crazy I think Portal 2 has a pretty shitty story, specifically it's a terrible sequel. It shits all over the tone of the first game by turning what was an unsettling almost horror atmosphere into a through and through comedy. It then massacred GLaDOS's character and tried to replace her as villain with the one character they explicitly establish is both designed to be an idiot and also not responsible for his evil turn. They should've fired the writers on this game I tell you.
I've yet to see a game with more moronic plot contrivances and shit characterizations. Having the gall to charge for a "This will make it make sense!" DLC that makes the writing even more contrived is the cherry on top.

Guild Wars 2. It's been over a decade and things probably improved but on launch it was probably the dumbest written game I've ever experienced particularly once you made it to the faction choice of your living story.
TLOU2 or Bioshock Infinite. All other games either have at least a few redeeming factors or don't have enough story for it to be truly terrible. TLOU2 and Infinite are in a league of their own with how nearly every aspect of the story is bungled.
>Although I have to admit Beyond Two Souls is not only VERY poorly written, it's literally inmoral.
I still can't believe they actually made it so that the villain who tortured the spirits of his family and unleashed the apocalypse can just shoot himself in the head and instantly be forgiven and go to ghost heaven.
Whichever is your favorite.
FF7 Remake
explain to me what makes writting bad? I would argue Horizon and NU Gow but I will wait to hear the definition

They cancelled the Bamco game because they don't want a repeat of Other M.

You care about writing in video games?
the bad writing of Other M ruins the whole game, so yes
>It was so bad it killed the game
>9, 9 written endings and all of them are awful
The only one at Nintendo who knew what a "Bounty Hunter" was must have been the creator, Gunpei Yokoi. Which would be ironic.
Space Bounty Hunters/Mercenaries are essentially medieval guild Adventurers but in space for the japanese.
Tales of Vesperia.
I finished the game and had no idea what happened
You defeated Sephiroth
I honestly don't get how Cage keeps getting money for more games. The stories are all legitimately, comically awful. Like so bad it's good shlock shit.
He obviously has connections and for some reason his games sell decently

Dread did it right with her only two voiced lines being in Chozo to a Chozo.
Agreed.
It’s the only way dialogue should be handled in a Metroid game
She also says AAAAAAAAAAAA once in the last boss fight
the Borderlands series
Forspoken
Other M
Practically any game with writing.
Tlou2
Tears of the Kingdom
THE BABY !!!!!1
Probably that one, OP. It's so irredeemably shit that no one even remembers the story.
What ever happened to Mother Brain 2 anyways? It’s been like 17 years and we still haven’t gotten any resolution to that cliffhanger
If you’re talking about the AI then it died after getting shot by federation soldiers in the ending.
fire emblem engage
Xenoblade Chronicles
We had a thread on this back in the day, TLOU2 won in a landslide with over 1000 votes, Fallout 4 was surprisingly 2nd
ENTER
Ok you can be tied with other M
The FFXIII as a whole is simultaneously the most excruciating poor script and the worst told story ever committed to video game.

I hate this game so much it's unreal.
That's kino tho

That game was made for tumblr girls

Fun fact; when you get to disc 3 you have to switch back to disc 1 to go back to early game towns. It’s bad on levels that no other game ever was

The movie was at least good though
and a novel

THUMBS DOWN NI- MOTHERFRICKER
gonna also say the Kingdom Hearts series in general for crossing the line from kino (Kh1 & 2) to neverending story bullshit
2 is when the story got shit (it became irredeemable with BBS)
TLOU2 objectively speaking
I've yet to see a game with more moronic plot contrivances and shit characterizations. Having the gall to charge for a "This will make it make sense!" DLC that makes the writing even more contrived is the cherry on top.

Elaborate.
Guild Wars 2. It's been over a decade and things probably improved but on launch it was probably the dumbest written game I've ever experienced particularly once you made it to the faction choice of your living story.
As an adult, Resident Evil 1 is straight garbage of a story (if still a decent game).
Wesker is not a real adult, neither is Jill, and Barry is a cartoon character without depth.
Resident Evil in general is a very unserious franchise.
TLOU2 or Bioshock Infinite. All other games either have at least a few redeeming factors or don't have enough story for it to be truly terrible. TLOU2 and Infinite are in a league of their own with how nearly every aspect of the story is bungled.

Last of us 2, Allan wake 2, Bear Gayte 3. Anyways other m was good and based. Better than the prime series and dread.
Fallout 3
Fallout 4
Skyrim
I've never played Fallout 76 or ESO, so I can't comment on those.
