FFCC Ring of Fates and Echoes of Time is that good shit and the DS Castlevania's are pretty fricking good. Just wondering why you didn't include Portrait of Ruin?
Reading reviews, forums and the like from 2004 I'm surprised by how much of a hit the DS seemed to be right off the bat, there were complaints about how much less powerful it was compared to the PSP but other than that people were pretty taken by it
t. zoomer who only got into DS around 2008
Anyway, any anons who remember, what were your thoughts on DS when it was first revealed/released?
also a zoomer i got it somewhere between 2005-2006, i don't remember. my first games were super mario bros and pokemon ranger, whenever i got stuck on a level or were too scared of the enemies i gave the DS to my mom and she'd finish that level for me. i thought it was the best thing ever because i was so bored all the time and i never played video games before then.
~30yo BOOMER here. I was 14 when it launched and got one that Christmas. It was fine. There were factions in high school the PSP guys and the DS dudes. Everyone acknowledged the PSP as the superior machine but its success was really limited by the super shit battery life and those stupid ass UMDs. From a quality standpoint, DS did have a serious dead pixel issue at launch-- I remember that.
Good times
Zoomer here too! I loved the DS when I go it. Me and my cousins received matching DS's for our Christmas gift with Mario Kart. Since she and I received the same DS's that Christmas we basically played with and against eachother any time we could. She was my pokemon rival and friend. Pretty awesome experiences!
As for my thoughts, I had none lol. I didn't even know the nintendo ds existed before I got it. It came as a surprise to me so I was honestly pretty pleased with it myself 🙂
I also didn't make the connection of the psp being its rival console so I never cared much for the lack of power. I only got to try one psp once as a kid and that was to watch Appleseed on it. I was a kid so pretty much anything seemed cool to me :>
It's alright but the new dinosaur mountain backtracking sidequest they added pissed me off. Square fricked up every port of this game in some way, so there's not really a definitive version. >NES: the good OG but no FMVs >PS1: FMVs but shit load times >DS: itty bitty screen and audio, FMVs, new amateur optional content, I'm not kidding when I say amateur >Steam: Randomly missing FMVs, crashes, some of the new DS content, but not all
If you're playing it on hardware I'd say go with the DS. It's nice portable. If you're emulating on PC maybe go with the NES if you can bear to miss out on the FMVs, but I really like the FMVs. The added content shouldn't influence your decision because it really isn't that good.

I thought the dude who created this list was a homosexual at first for not including DQIX, but then I saw he both included Rupeeland and did not include Spirit Tracks and that fully saved it.
here's a newer version i have saved. i don't know if this was updated again or not and i also barely played the DS so i dunno if this list is even good
All Dragon Quest games including the spinoffs, all the Professor Layton games, all the YuGiOh games are good, Strange Journey, Etrian Odyssey (pick one they're all the same).
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker! I think it was pretty cool that it was 3d and had overworld monsters roaming around. Looking back on it makes pokemon look a bit lazy by comparisson even though I played the shit out of Pearl.
You also have the pokemon mystery dungeon games, mariokart, nintendogs, and sonic colors. 🙂

Chrono Trigger's DS version isn't bad if you like (J)RPGs.

The dragon quest games were great. There was a weird tic-tac-toe game you could only d/l on the ds shop for free and you can't get it anymore.
I can't believe this thing turns 20 this year. Pokemon gen 4 turns 18. Frick just kill me
