elden ring just due to its sheer size. though you could also say that of quite a few games lately, since the pandemic added on an extra ~2 years of dev time to most big releases, allowing them to actually finish the games before the publishers rushed them out the door.

Elden Ring isn't perfect by any means but the sheer scale of the game and lack of loading is something that has not been possible until very recently.
Now granted it's not quite what I think of when I think of true next gen games that capitalize on the hardware, but it is pretty close.
Minecraft is also pretty big. And Daggerfall. They also just as empty as Elden Ring.
Both are procedurally generated and therefore irreelvant.

Elden Ring is fricking massive and it's a rare game that doesn't bend over backwards to hold your hand and make sure you've always got a big glowing beacon telling you where to go next. if Dark Souls helped define Gen 7 and Gen 8 then Elden Ring most definitely brings the series into the 9th Generation in a huge way that feels appropriate for a next-gen rendition. everything is just bigger and better.

The biggest gaming mind blow out i ever had was playing the MGS2 demo for the first time. Nothing will ever feel as next gen as MGS2. the code is still very much of a 360/PS3 game, cars despawning right behind you, npc in cars will de-load and change if they get too far from you but then you chase them down. It's still programed for half a gig of RAM

GTA 4 was the last game to blow my mind too. Prior to that it was MGS2, GTA 3 and Tekken Tag 1 for the PS2.
It's strange to me gta4 blew anyone's mind but it also makes sense because that was the last era the public at large was ignorant toward game development on a macro scale. There was absolutely nothing amazing about it and as an idort it actually felt like a huge disappointment coming off of VC and SA.
