Planescape torment
>the story in (new crpg) sucks
>so what has a good story?
>PST
Every fricking time.
First, second and third best post.
fippy bippy
secondaries will talk about WHAT CAN CHANGE THE NATURE OF A MAN but writing of an average quest or hive npc is of little note
lotta words has long since stopped being an incredible selling point, the playfulness of the tropes has been lost beneath the sands of time, and now only planescape (the setting) itself really offers something unique
but the half a dozen ways you can conclude the game for me it's threatening to KILL MYSELF NOW with blade of the immortal to coerce the transcendent one is genuinely great, that's something i wish more games actually stole
>writing of an average quest or hive npc is of little note
you're fricking moronic, every other random Sigil npc is more interesting and well written than the main cast of the shit crpgs that come out today. Also that's not what secondary means, have a nice day.
fair enough, can't be a secondary if there's no secondary material to engage with (but how do you call playthrough watchers then?)
but don't give me that shit about 2deep4u writing, exposition about tangential nonsense for the purposes of ""worldbuilding"" is a (terrible) bread&butter of an average fantasy story, in that sense torment differs little from modern pathfinder games
you can argue that it's just purely better writing, but i am simply uninvested in the fishmonger backstory or dustmen rituals until it affects (me)
compare that to tree-growing quest, which ties into mage classchange, where you have differring ways to engage with the process and try to convince your party into believing -- which is a great way of saying BELIEF=POWER without any needless elaboration on the nature of outer planes or whatever
>average quest or hive npc is of little note
Absolute Marvel movie fan levels of media literacy. PST is packed full of writing that supports and expands the themes of regret and torment over conflicted natures.
/thread
I've played all of these, enjoyed them, but they 100% fit the bill.
These however are moronic, those are some of the most widely played games to exist.
Damn, I love that game. I hear it has the best writing for a video game ever, says it right on the box! One day, maybe I'll even play it!
That definition is stupid, but these three
Fit extremely well.
Finished it 3 times
Finished it 14 times
Eh games, once and done
Get fricked zoomers with no taste
This game is better than some classic literature
True
Deus ex
who the frick hasnt played deus ex at least once you dont belong here
Only among zoomers because your parents raised you to have actual, measurable brain damage. Pic rel used to be the meme on Ganker
It still is. I have DX constantly installed so I won't have to reinstall
Deus Ex actually has great gameplay tho. They should release it on modern consoles for a quick buck
>Deus Ex actually has great gameplay tho.
rotflmfao
Earthbound
Fire emblem 4 and final fantasy VII
This too
>san andreas and skyrim
Black person even third-worlders played that shit a ton stop lying.
I’ve never seen anyone mention this as a classic. I’ve only ever seen people mention that other people mention it as a classic.
Rogue
Not a SINGLE person praises Rogue though
Fallout New Vegas
GTA San Andreas
Dead Space
Skyrim
Skyrim is the last game that would fit this description, everybody's played Skyrim and praising it doesn't make you look intelligent or knowledgeable.
Half Life 1 (not the Black Mesa version)
People still regularly play New Vegas and Skyrim. But the Definitive Edition did pretty much kill San Andreas.
How the frick do you even play the good version of San Andreas now? Pirating or Xbox Arcade?
Either pirating or tracking down original copy.
I'm honestly so fricking mad about the Definitive Edition releases. GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas were absolutely genre-defining and mind-blowing games when they came out. San Andreas in particular has so many elements that make its world believable, like statues dynamically breaking down when you shoot at them, and... then all of that shit is just gone from Definitive Edition release.
What a bunch of rubbish. Rockstar doesn't give a shit about representing their past in any kind of good light. There's shittons of people now who did not play SA when it launched, and if they do play the DE, they will not be impressed at all.
It's a repeat of Blizzard trying to literally reach back through history and destroy Warcraft 3
>GTA San Andreas
>skyrim
fricking everyone and their mother played that one
>Skyrim
>classic
popular slop == classic
>posts 3 of the most replayed games of all time
you are fricking moronic
Lmao everyone point and laugh at this stupid little shit-runt
Holy FRICK anon how's it feel to be the dumbest motherfricker on all of Ganker? Pretty special goddamn accomplishment, my man.
Get fricked you stupid moron lol
Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask.
arena shooters
Every Nintendo game.
Quake
Yeah, Quake 1, legitimately not that good for how revered it is. I think people just think they have to respect it, because it's Quake, and it was so important in the development of 3D games.
Doom and Duke 3D are more fun. Turok and Goldeneye are more fun...
Nah, boomers played this once during a LAN 20-30 years ago and still think they are gods gift to mankind for being good against their friends and think it's the hardest game in the genre.
Mark Twain is a homosexual and this quote doesn't make sense. I've read plenty of classics.
How would you feel if you didn't eat yesterday?
The same, because I didn't eat breakfast yesterday. I slept till 1 PM.
But I did eat yesterday?
Sorry for your autism
Witcher 3
Tlou 1

Tetris
Sotn
Bioshock
Undertale
Chrono trigger
Sotc and ico
Black person how fricking stupid are you?
You should feel bad for this post.
touhou
that's pop culture in a nutshell
why else do you think people pretended captain kirk had a funny way of talking?
He did have a bit of a funny way of talking, though it came out more when he wasn't actually playing Kirk. The thing people really blow out of proportion about Kirk is how much sex he has, people make him out to be a complete pussyhound but he doesn't really frick that often and usually when he seduces a woman it's so she'll let him out of jail or some shit.
captain kirk dialogue is preposterous, wtf?
“If you do not behave,

the ancient earth ritual known as
the spanking.
It’s given to very naughty girls when they misbehave”
>Fallout 1/2

half-life 2
1/2
honestly frick you, that this is the first one you think of, eat shit and die. i have replayed both of these games at least 6 times each, without any mods.
Do you also think that the statement "asian men are shorter in average" is false because you know a tall asian guy?
Fallout 1's my second favourite game of all time and always will be, but in my experience it is pretty common for NV fans in particular to overinflate the hell out of that game based on its faithfulness to them and then say they've not played them (or often shit on them if they have). Some posts in this thread are definitiely just tripping over themselves to rationalise why people like a game they don't, though.
Anon, this may be a tough thing to grasp for you, but when Twain said "people don't," he didn't mean it absolutely literally.
thief
doom

Ganker is full of normalgays who act like every Ganker-tier newbie in existence and sperg the frick out if you imply their bestselling AAA-status series isn't the best article of literature of all time.
Gets me everytime. Shame newbies don't know about the Based God.
>when he gets to SIREN
man..
we'll never get a console like the PS2 ever again
The entire fricking library except for maybe SOTN which somehow stayed ageless and relevant because it's more like an SNES game than a PS1 game
If there was some kind of magic truly omniscient "Steam Stats" style gaming metric, right now on earth there are still people playing Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time and frickin' Banjo Kazooie and there's nobody playing any PS1 "classics"
I play Gran Turismo 2 on the regular speak for yourself.
Xenogears
Chrono Trigger
Mario RPG
Quake or other boomer shooters
FF games prior to 7
MGS is kino
FF7 is kino
SH1 is kino
Seems like a you problem.
>Chrono Trigger
Oh my fricking GOD. have a nice day you worthless excuse for a human being. Chrono Trigger is excellent and plays as well now as it did on release. I would honestly say it's one of the most timeless games ever. Either you haven't played it; you don't like JRPGs; or you have Ganker contrarian brain cancer and need to be euthanised.
It's not "These games are bad" it's "These games aren't widely played despite all the praise it gets." Realistically, not many people have played or emulated CT but those that have love it, and people usually point at characters or listen to tracks from it and praise it too, despite not playing it.
>Quake or other boomer shooters
--are generally better games than modern cawadoodey slop.
Doesn't matter. Their fanbase is dead. You're playing vs bots and larping out old fantasies.
How the frick are you meant to play comfortably with such a short controller cable?
It's the iPad generation bro, they've ruined everything.
I would honestly say SotN is way overrated, and if anything Crash Bandicoot stands out as the shining israeliteel of the Playstation library.
MGS and FF7 are kind of mediocre too. The storytelling and aesthetic elements of those games are good, but actually playing them is kind of a chore.
Oh yeah, Silent Hill is shit too. Frick Silent Hill. Poor man's Resident Evil.
Nah.
>right now on earth there are still people playing Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time
Trannies/speedrunners aren't people
Why did you say speedrunners twice
(blocks your path)
Residentsident 2vil 3 Emesis?
My favorite game.
>Emesis
>SNES
SNoy Entertainment System
Pretendo64 fan still seething after so many years
I played Vagrant Story like, yesterday? Sounds like a you problem, there's a ton of timeless classics on the console. Final Fantasy Tactics was on the PSX, too.
>Ganker is full of normalgays who act like every Ganker-tier newbie in existence and sperg the frick out if you imply their bestselling AAA-status series isn't the best article of literature of all time.
This is like the exact opposite of my experience on Ganker, like Ganker it's 99% people jerking each other off over how obscure and tradcath their taste is.
Silent Hill, especially the second one
Planescape: Torment
I guarantee most of you Black folks haven't even bothered playing the first hour of it.
I'm sure Mark Twain never said that.
Yeah, it was actually Lincoln who said it.
Everything Ganker shills.
Pretty much all early CRPGs, until maybe Balder's Gate and Fallout.
No one plays Ultima games, or Elder Scrolls 1 and 2. You may say you do, but you don't.
Old Fallout especially the original . Everyone I ever knew who was a "classic Fallout fan" was really just a fan of 2.
The Fallout 2 worship by people that have never played it is obnoxious.
You'd think the game was the most reactive video game ever created and that it had a deeper morality system than the real world, even.
When in reality the moral system is a choice between doing the correct and obviously intended path or just playing a destructive contrarian for the hell of it.
I guess you'd say that it is nice that the game lets you play as a contrarian. But it isn't like the game ever gives you a real unsolvable moral dilemma to deal with.
I've played through Arena a couple of times, I genuinely think it's fun to frick about with.
I see more people praising FF7 than actually having played the game.
When FF7 came out and was a huge phenomenon there were jokes about "why did they number the first one 7" because nobody actually played the three that came out before it
FF7 actually was the first one to come out in Europe, and I think only the 4th to come out in America.
Same here in Australia. I remember there was a niche game store that had import consoles and games and that was the only place I ever saw Final Fantasy 3 (6) SNES or Chrono Trigger for sale when I was a kid and they were outrageously expensive.
The point is that they sold tons back in the day, and were incredibly influential, but nobody is going back and playing them anymore. There's just sort of agreed public opinion of "Yeah, that game was classic, it sure is great, totally a must play!"
This applies to 99% of games then
>99% of games sold well
Anon, are you just pretending to be moronic to have pointless Internet fights?
Yes
ocarina of time
Something selling millions decades ago doesn't mean anything in the modern day when people still praise those games despite having never directly played them.
Just like people praise 'classic' novels that were popular once, but aren't read today but have kept a legacy forever more.
Hell, Mark Twain himself is now one of those figures. How many people have read anything he wrote other than some of Huckleberry Finn in grade school?
Some games generally praised or mostly talked about by people who never played them:
Street Fighter 3rd Strike
Touhou
Wonderful 101
System Shock
Suikoden 2
Deus Ex
Tomb Raider 1,2,3
Zelda oot and mm
Metal Gear Solid 1
Resident Evil 1,2 and 3
the PS2 GTA games
Final Fantasy games before 10
Castlevania sotn
Every Legacy of Kain game
God Hand
>man I wish they still made no nonsense simple action brawlers like God Hand still
>have you ever played God Hand
>I-I-I mean....
All Rare games
No one pretends they played Mickey's Speedway USA.
Persona 3
People have played Persona 3, the Persona 2 games are the ones I think people praise but don't play, especially because I have played them and they so dogshit that the only way I can justify the praise I have seen for them is people reading the wiki or watching a video essay and thinking it sounds cool so they praise it despite how shit it is.
>People have played Persona 3
Yeah in 2006 probably, but Persona 2 and 1 are more like the "forgotten" prequels nobody played and nobody cared about.
Most people played Persona 4 and 5 and praise 3 because... because Yukari is the hottest vidya character probably
i assume he referred to the book "classic" everyone had, standing there merely as unused decorations in bookcase, without ever reading them.
a game equivalent would be more the merchandise of soi manbabies with their unused kid toys to games, comic and movies
So Fortnite and modern CoD?
gaming "journalist" favorite like movie "games" which they not really play
There are words for this but it isn't classic. You have pretentious garbage or hipster trash for example. Classics are considered classics after the fact, they have to earn that name. If some homosexual praises something on the basis of its reputation, it's his decision to give in to peer pressure
GoldenEye. Nobody wants to play an aged FPS like that. Hasn't aged like Doom or Quake or oddly even Turok 64.
>Zoomers crying and seething about games that were made before they were born thread #4739583738573
you morons don't even play video games
planescape, yakuza, pathologic, mgs series, morrowind, earthbound, silent hill, pretty much all nes and snes games at this point. When someone tells you "dude FF 4 was good" it means they just watched a video about it on youtube.
This is just a thread full of people flaunting their complete dogshit zoomer taste. Deus Ex isn't a classic? Chrono Trigger isn't a classic? Fricking Fallout 1 isn't a classic?!
Actually have a nice day you gaming morons.
Im moronic then, i thought the point was "good games that get a lot of praise from people that have never played them"
The posts in this thread are predominantly people posting games and talking about them being overrated or not deserving the praise.
The Witness
Diabl- oh wait, thousands of people are still playing it over 20 years later, in the original version, the remastered version, and modded versions.
When you make a great game, it tends to live on forever.
Yeah validation feels amazing. Observe I give you Ganker gold kind stranger.
Ghost Trick
Silent Hill 1 & 2
Earthbound
Deus Ex
Planescape Torment
...
Do you guys make an effort to go back and play older games to get perspective on the medium? Not necessarily even 'classics', just old games that you've heard talked about.
I generally try and alternate between a new game and a 'classic'. As an example I recently played Gothic 1 and 2, and will be moving on to 3 once I've finished Baldur's Gate 3.
I do, though I don't do it in such a structured way as you describe. I remember when I first played Ocarina of Time I had no actual interest in it but I felt like I should play it anyway just for being such a landmark title. I ended up liking it anyway though. I did the same with Deus Ex more recently.
of course, if you don't do that, can you really say you're an enthusiast?
Yeah, recently played through Dragon's Dogma and SotC again, it confirmed there's something really wrong with the current state of the industry, it went from games competing for having the most advanced gameplay systems to being graphics showcases with generic gameplay.
It's what the consooomer wants and what allows the companies to jack up prices a bit higher each year. They couldn't justify $80 for a game with the graphical fidelity of a Deus Ex or a Terranigma. Worst of all, they'd have to have either unique gameplay or a plot that stands out.
Maybe the trend will be reversed when indies can get an AI to generate high quality 3D assets for them and ew technologies will yield so little perceptible graphics improvement that there's a turnaround in the industry. Then, programmers might alo be able to concentrate on optimizing and bugfixing their game before shipping.
Of course, that's silly to hope for, but an Anon can dream, no?
I don't do it often but I certainly do it every now and again
I completed a Battlefront 2 (2007) conquest campaign and played through all of Culpa Innata earlier this year
I agree it gives some good perspective and sometimes you get to play a diamond in the rough
Yeah, i do not think games age, its either good or not. Megaman x2 is one of my favorite games and i plan to try dark messiah next week.
"Aging" is mostly a factor of games that follow adopting different/improved ways of doing things.
Like Mario 64 gets ragged on for its camera, simply because it was one of the first 3D platformers and those that came after streamlined the camera by building upon that knowledge.
Touhou
Persona
Ninja Gaiden Black. It gets a lot of street cred, and mostly from people who just parrot it and didn't actually play it; or gave up on it because it was too hard and just want to be part of the in-crowd. See also: Nioh and most Soulslikes.
Disco Elysium
Either original N64 Zelda
Max Payne
Disco Elysium is a fairly modern one. Everyone seems to love it but it sold poorly if I remember correctly. Maybe not financially but in terms of raw players compared to how many people talk about it.
Stuff I just didn't like at all
>deus ex, loved hr and MD
>gta games
>elder scrolls
>fighting games as a whole
>every 'good' sonic game
>resisent evil prior to 4
>yoshi's island
>thought the controls of mgs 1 2 and 3 made them a slog. 4 was better control wise but was also a huge piece of shit
>counter strike source and go
>all from soft games
>doom 1, 2 and 2016
>devil may cry 1 but I adore 3
>hitman prior to the reboot
>arena shooters
>old crpg games
so then what the frick do you like?
These would be my favorites
Game journalist tier.
dmc3 because I get to watch dante do crazy flips in the cutscenes
Anything else would be my guess.
how do I get a haircut like mark twain without showing my barber a picture of mark twain
>Game sellls minnions
>Less than 70% has achievement of pressing start
>Less than 10% has achievement of finished it
>Nobody is ever seen playing it
What color of pajeet are you if you don't know this basic shit?
And classic books have sold even more copies so I guess Mark Twain is a moron hurrr
WHY IS EVERYONE ACTING moronic THE THREAD IS ABOUT GAMES PEOPLE SUCK OFF WITHOUT HAVING PLAYED THEM, ARE AMERICANS THIS moronic'?????
Most of these replies are shit. Planescape gets on some top 10 lists but it's hardly mainstream enough for phonies to name drop.
The "War & Peace" of video games would have to have an easily recognizable name that far more people are aware of than played. Based on this criteria I would say Half Life. It came out when most millenials were still in school and could not afford a gaming PC. Those who did buy might have only done so for counter strike/team fortress as well. I personally know few who actually finished the game, but lots who are aware it's a classic.
I’ve played every game in this thread. All I see is a whole lot of people admitting they’ve never played the classics. You homosexuals need to frick off and play video games before you post here.
Mark Twain was not saying that literally nobody had ever read classic works of literature, idiot. It was a wry joke that the substance of reputation is primarily what other people are saying.
Well yeah, that’s what reputation means. What a moronic quote and thread. You gays still need to play more video games.
You're an actual fricking moron.
Cry more nogames homosexual.
Dwarf Fortress
Oldschool Runescape. Everyone who plays this now a days never actually played back before the G.E, or godwars. OSRS pandered to the 2009+ kiddies.
Is 2007 runescape considered oldschool, or is it the older than that one?
That’s the one they mean, not RS1.
RS1 was pretty much a prototype.
2007 runescape is what osrs should have stayed as. runescape classic (the 2D one) was the original version made by the 3 gower brothers.
I never played skyrim
vanilla world of warcraft. i've gotten to level 52 as a warrior then got burned out
Why do zoomers find so hard to believe that millennials and gen-xers played games released around the time these were young?
>millions
The highest selling Earthbound/Mother game barely broke 500k.
