The author was crazy and it basically wasn't marketed outside him being crazy. Plus, it came out when dungeon crawlers were at a low point, not like now when there is a (somewhat) recent number coming out.

It's an insane shitpost game that you can't even understand unless you played Wizardry 7, which barely any of the current people playing video games have.
He sold around 20k copies simply by trolling people for three decades. It did well considering the marketing budget (nothing). Also, it's pretty good but nothing outstanding. It definitely feels like a clone of Wizardry 7 with much worse graphics.
