Basically 3H had LORE. And by lore I mean an explanation for why things are the way they are. I think that 3H team were maybe overly ambitious because eventually you hit a point where things stop making sense but they did swing for the fences. At least in comparison to Engage where they didn't even try. Engage by and large is a Saturday morning cartoon. I don't think most people will fight me on that, you're not meant to engage with the setting that much. There is lore and backstory. But it doesn't have anything to do with anything. Raphael is one of the simplest characters in 3H and his backstory is that his parents got eaten by wolves just because they were traveling with the alliance leader to an art show held by his rival. A series of deaths that we find out later were not an accident and I was actually part of a conspiracy to force instability within the alliance the same way instability was seeded within the kingdom and the empire. Even though Raphael is a very basic character his backstory links back to the general theme of the game. Everyone likes Yunaka and she has a backstory about how she was a former assassin. That has absolutely nothing to do with the main plot of the game. Yunaka as a character vanishes after she is recruited. Because the circumstances of her being an assassin doesn't matter. Diamant and Ivy inheriting two warring kingdoms that have a lot of blood on their hands don't matter. Which means there's no real reason to invest in Engage's characters.
Actually 3H was developed out-of-house and Engage was developed in-house. It turns out that IS is so shit at developing FE that a company that primarily makes musou blew them the frick out.

The mole people COULD'VE been good. When you read the evidence of their machinations in manuscripts and character testimonies, they actually look really intelligent. The Tragedy of Duscur was a brilliant move on their part because it you blink you'd totally miss their involvement. Volkart deciding to whisk Edelgard out of the Empire to avoid the dumpster fire of the Insurrection was a good move on his part. Because both Anselma and her best friend Cornelia were already there. You're basically giving Edelgard back to her mother where she'll be safe. There was no way he could've known that Cornelia was already body snatched by the time he turned Edelgard over to her. Cornelia leveraging the fact that Lambert getting caught fricking the Emperor's concubine might lead to a political forest fire was a good play to keep them separated where she could feed them conflicting information, to the point where Anselma/ Patricia turned on Lambert because she thought he was keeping her daughter from her on purpose when really Cornelia had her the whole time until she could give her back to Thales. And if any evidence of foul play came up it can all be blamed on Cornelia and Patricia who both came from the Empire while the Slitherers disappear into the night. In one move Cornelia ass fricked both the Kingdom and the Empire so hard that they'd never really recover.
And then you play the game and it's just... Thales.
That's just it though, Thales is the leader. And yet everything decision he makes is the most smooth brained, counter productive shit conceivable. Just so we're clear Myson had already turned a bunch of people in the Empire into feral demons AND got Baron Ochs to find and steal the artificial Hero's Relic from Kalupa before White Clouds was even over. An artificial Hero's Relic that was probably used as a template to make Edelgard's Aymr and maybe even Nemesis Dark Creator Sword and the weapons for the zombie 10 Elites. So Myson was pulling a whole lot of weight for being a background character.
Thales held a Slither meeting with the Flame Emperor and "Monica" on monastery grounds. A meeting that allowed Dimitri to link the Flame Emperor with Edelgard. It just seems like the writing effort went to every Slither besides the leader who immediately fricks up everything just by existing. But he also holds the most authority, including the authority to use the nukes.
weird i got the impression the molepeople were neutral evil. there was enough subtext about the ~~*nabateans*~~ having done just as much fricked up shit, if not worse, to the molepeople in the prehistory of fodlan so everything we see them do in the game is simply a means to an end of getting back what was their or righting wrongs done to them. haven't played this game in years though i could be wrong if the DLC changes the main game's story but i interpreted the molepeople neutral.
