Also they couldn't directly offer an external mod and if it was found that they were actively supporting the client mod or not doing their "due diligence" to prevent it they could be on the hook depending on how litigious GF was. Basically if GF was Nintendo, they'd be in trouble. That said, copyrights are weird in that if you don't actively protect them, then you basically lose the right to protect them. Online simulators, specifically Showdown, have been around for so long that if GF or TPC tried to come down on one now it would be a legitimate legal defense to say "you didn't enforce this copyright for 20 years, it is unfair you're targeting me now" and, assuming the judicial system wasn't corrupt (it is) they'd actually win.

Every pokemon generation comes to an end. Eventually there will be a "last pokemon game", and it too will come to an end. But omgon will live on. Why should it not? They actually enjoy pokemon as hobbyists; as opposed to being a business who only cares about deadlines or a normie who only cares about consuming new product. Omgon is a timeless entity, as evidenced by a history of seamless transitions of leadership. Can you imagine any of the big names at GF leaving? I truly believe omgon will outlive "pokemon" itself because they are the only people who actually genuinely truly care about pokemon. Showdown devs have stated that TPC will allow it to exist as long as they don't monetize Showdown and don't add pokemon before the games come out.
