Almost assuredly some other competitor would have arisen, especially after Sega died, but, Nintendo would just kinda be THE video game console, only really competing with PC.

No console has ever really held up by directly comparing to PC, but nobody has done handhelds as good and no nonsense as Nintendo. Sometimes you want to play a game on a plane, or while taking a shit, or just curled up somewhere cozy. Sony tried, the PSP was okay, but the vita shat itself for proprietary expensive parts. The Steamdeck is okay, a good first attempt, it's a handheld that can play heavily modded Skyrim and it's uncontested in that, but it's also frickhuge, so isn't really a handheld, as much as it is a household flexible system. The switch is a little guilty of this, but isn't as bad.
The PS2 is about the best home consoles have done relative to computers at the time, and that was entirely on the back of tons of support for developers to make weird experimental shit, than anything about the PS2 specifically.
Without piracy, the only things you miss out on with a PC and a Nintendo handheld are either the latest trashheap rebooted console exclusive graphicshomosexualry game that flounders against random shit on PC, or certain non-nintendo local multiplayer games, which are usually shitty knockoffs of the Nintendo versions anyways.
With piracy, you have all that, too, and usually it works better anyways.
I loved Nintendo at its SNES zenith but I just can't go out of the way for open world mmo sim zelda now or bing bing wahoo. Esp. since I like money more than burning it just to be a console pleb and can play anything actually good via emu.
Console of any type is just a trap. The handheld argument for being out is legit but if I am out now I want to be out and away from computers probably drinking with preferably women. I don't even want to be looking at my phone.
Piracy of the non-emu variety is also more costly to me in terms of time spent vs. just buying the occasional thing of quality on sale because my time to dig up and tweak and fiddle with crap is worth a lot more than the occasional sub 60 median 30 dollar buy. I do have some ethical qualms about it too since the original titan quest dev got burned by pirated review copies. Don't have any sympathy for devs that are pulling walled garden shit rather than just putting it on PC in a playable format either. I've bought the occasional capcom packaged rom thing with extra menus such as castlevania collections, being some on the gba I missed playing and this kind of thing even though I could have just done it all on emu.
Main moronation on Nintendo's part was to use an interface no one besides Rare and themselves knew how to code on. Had they went with more conventional CPUs instead of the SGI stuff, they would have had less problems.
Square falls apart like every other non-Nintendo publisher that tried to stay just with Nintendo, gets bought by Microsoft and you had Black lesbian cloud and transgender Barrette that much sooner. Enix likely wouldn't have merged with them in a world where they weren't dominating the PS and so Enix also fails and is bought by Microsoft or EA and you know what happens then.

Final Fantasy keeps being a niche IP in the west since Nintendo didn't care for JRPGs and Sony were the ones behind the heavy marketing of FFVII in the west.
SNES already had a smaller userbase than NES. The downward trend would've continued regardless.
This would've kept Final Fantasy from turning into trash. It's a shame.
Sony would have given up, and Playstation would not exist. The lack of CDs is the main reason RPGs all came out on Playstation rather than N64. When XBox arrived on the scene, we would have seen the emergence of dueling monopolies: east vs west, shooters and WRPGs vs family-friendly nintendo games and JRPGs
Microsoft probably wouldn't have entered the console race though.
The entire reason the Xbox happened was because the PS2 worked as a DVD player, and Microsoft jumped into a burgeoning "PC" market to have a foot in the door to compete later.
