What if Nintendo didn't let Sega have an almost 2 year head start on the 4th gen, and released the SNES in 1989, the same year as the Genesis? Super Mario Bros 3 could have been a launch title for the SNES.

You're taking it for a given that Nintendo was even capable of the level of fidelity shown in All-Stars (1993), which if SMW is anything to go by they clearly weren't
This scrapped sprite sheet from 1989 shows otherwise, though.
Nintendo probably ditched rich colour-palettes in favor of more simplistic shading due to time & budget constraints.
this looks worse than the final game
I'll admit that I'm not particularly a fan of pillow shading but it's evident that this took a lot more effort to create than the final sprites.
I mean let's be real, for SNES standards SMW world looks graphically awful. Even Sonic 1 looks better in spite of being released on a console with inferior hardware (save for the blast processing meme)
class takes more thought than putting as many colours on screen as you can
But yeah Sonic 1 mogs mario world obviously but Mario world looks good, it's a cartoon
And by Sonic 3, people must have thought that Mario was finished.
Oh boy did Mario get his revenge one generation later.
Only took an entire generation of Nintendo playing catch up and also cost them the next generation.
Imagine coping and seething all day over a fat plumber
holy SOUL
Love these.
those weren't made with compression in mind, most of final SMW's sprites are stored in 3bpp (which the snes doesn't support natively, they are decompressed by software) and it allows for 8 colors only. they probably ditched the sprites you posted because they realized they had to save cartridge space and they took too much space in 4bpp (16 colors, natively supported by the snes)
Realize the snes was meant to use part of the cartridge as ram but most publishers cheapened out and bought the slowest ram possible.
That slow CPU, slow RAM and Nintendo Quality Control was autistic about sprite flickering for some reason resulting in most games having really low sprite count to avoid a little bit of flicker. Just bad decisions all around.
I have no source for this but I conjecture that's the reason Treasure completely passed on the Super Nes.
Sega still wins the 4th gen handily.
They never won it in the first place. Cope
>sega stops selling megadrive even though it's dominating the market
>nintendo keeps selling snes for many more years
>hehe we won
>stops selling
You underage moron. Genesis games were still being produced and sold until late 97. Genesis 3 came out in 98. Still didn't win 4th gen. Cope
Don't try to reason with fat balding nincels
>lost by over 15 million units
>use mental gymnastics and segoy propaganda to convince themselves they won
Is there anything more pathetic than a troonycel megasega israelite?
yeah infact, there is. it's being a 30-40 year old man who still gives a shit about console wars. somebody who never started a family, or even supports himself, so the only thing he's got to live for is arguing for other men like him like a middle schooler on the old kid's toys section of a kurdian war historian's site.
Thanks for divulging your backstory. Tell us more about your biography
>i know you are but what am i
really?
Genesis sales were winding down by 1995 but SOA weren't willing to let it go and SOJ found to their horror that they had warehouses filled with tens of thousands of unsellable consoles--Tom Kalinski moronicly thought the Genesis could last until 1998 and so they kept ordering them at 1992 levels of demand. Partially because of this SOA also neglected important tasks like translating Saturn technical docs.
>Tom Kalinski moronicly thought the Genesis could last until 1998
Tom Kalinske was gone by 1998, but Sega did work with Majesco to release the genesis Model 3 around the Christmas season of 1998. If I remember correctly, this machine was sold at like a $50.00 price tag.
I bought mine at Walmart for $29 during Xmas season.
>dominating
Don't think I'd trust Famitsu to tell me water's wet although I'm really not interested enough in this subject to bother looking it up
You're close to 40. Now you have depression.
why do segagays feel the need to lie about things that are easily disproven
They've had everything taken from them except for the past so this board is effectively their home turf, and they won't budge on any of the ground they've claimed, even what was built on a lie.
Are you from Europe, Australia, Japan or Latin America?
NOPE
>overtaken in a year despite a 3 year headstart
Damn, that's embarrassing.
Nintendo definitely took too long since they got fat and complacent off the Famicom cash cow.
well, what would it even change? ig some people (although not the japanese) might be miffed that they bought their kids a console two years ago and now they want a new one for christmas/their birthday
soulless
seems the intention was to woow kids with more graphics
>holograms
I will now shill for the All Stars version.
>reused tiles throughout the game
>muh gay spastic autizmo soul
Don't forget the BGM and SE of All Stars was complete crap as well. SMB3 was and is the best SM game to exist, probably only bested by SM64
soul/soulless
Things would be different.
But there’s no way to tell how.
End of thread.
Snes won, delusional sega c**ts
>Super Mario Bros 3 could have been a launch title for the SNES.
Then what system would SMW have been on?
sonic would've still been seen as innovative because of the physics and controls regardless of nintendo making the graphical leap first
nincels still coping that sonic's popularity was just a matter of time and place and not that it actually innovated the 2d platformer in ways mario stagnated
SFC would have been directly competing with the Famicom and NES markets, which were still quite healthy in 1989. It also could have predated Nintendo partnering up with Sony to develop the sound chip.
It would be interesting to know what it would have sounded like if Nintendo went with a more basic in-house chip. Maybe they would have taken an approach similar to what Sega did with the Genesis/MD and combine the features of the old sound chip with a new one (ie FM chips like some later-gen Famicom games).
So, basically, the half-step between NES and SNES that undercut the NES too early, possibly with FM sound, and Sony may have never entered the video game industry.
SNES was gimped from the start. Terrible CPU decision
The L R choice on the pad ruined the 5th gen controls and all controllers
We don't need shoulder buttons, just triggers
Do you have baby manlet hands? Why are you filtered by buttons? Posts wrists, hands, and testicles
6 face buttons were bad, are still bad, and will always be bad.
4 face buttons + 2 shoulders is superior, always. If you wanna play Street Fighter get a fricking fight stick
those half genesis half PS2 saitek controllers with 6 buttons and 4 shoulders were perfect. you can just ignore the extra two in games where its unnecessary but 4 buttons alone has been shown to be inhibiting which is why we had to add weird shit like pressable control sticks
L3 and R3 aren't weird, I never saw complaints until I came to /vr/. In 3D games they're movement actions which makes sense since you already use the sticks to move/control camera.
they're fine additions but are an indication that 4 face buttons even along with 4 shoulder buttons still aren't enough
>they're movement actions
plenty of actions mapped to the face buttons have to do with movement. most obvious of all jumping
>4 face buttons even along with 4 shoulder buttons still aren't enough
Tf /vr/ games are you playing my man
reading comprehension. l3 and r3 were added by developers at all because the snes way wasn't enough, something you've implied is "always" superior
Yeah let's just ignore the console transition to 3D in the mid-90s as if that didn't increase the complexity and required number of buttons for games. What a dishonest fricking post, you hardly deserve a reply from me.
SNES controller had perfect buttons and layout for 2D games and the Dualshock for 3D (although turning the second set of shoulder buttons to analog triggers was a great change)
you yourself have referred multiple times to a /vr/ example where the snes style doesn't work lol
A 2D game? I can't think of a single 2D game that couldn't be played excellently on this pad. Especially not a console game.
Would the SNES still be released with the same specs? If so, then in all seriousness very little would change, the SNES would just have a bigger library. Sega would still release poorly conceived add-ons as a stop gap until 4th gen arrived, beginning their grueling journey of destroying consumer confidence.
moron amerilards who call the Mega Drive the 'genesis" make me sick.
have a nice day
Don't ever let go of that hatred. It's a beautiful thing. It's what the world needs.
SNES had SMW on release, it didnt need SMB3
