          >Why is the economy collapsing?
Because of multiple reasons all interacting, but probably the largest and most responsible for the economic situation is just that the entire world is currently going through a rough economic period. Countries like Japan, the UK, and soon to be China are entering recessions and globalism has tied all economies together.

This, people don't truly understand how deep the woke rabbit hole goes.

The bloat is needed for the companies to sink their hooks into our world and stay there. They need huge teams to pretend all the revenue they earn is a big pie going to be sliced a big family when we all know the CEOs get 80% of the profits. Also suddenly a privately owned entertainment company having so many people working there means there's more at stake if they go belly up, you don't want all those hard working people to get laid off, do you?

It is worth noting that the worst of this is hitting American companies in particular. European and Asian companies are taking hits too, but it is nowhere near as bad in them, because they (generally) have been better in avoiding bloat than the US industry that has been aping the tech business strategy of always putting corporate expansion first. Now they are paying for it because the eternal growth of profits didn't happen linearly with the eternal expansions of corporations.

AAA budgets are unsustainable. Almost every triple A game needs to make double digit millions of sales with a $70 price tag to be profitable. There simply isn't a paying audience to make remotely all of those games worth making even if they all were good.

Wait, so are they saying that people were being fired from DEI departments (that they're mislabeling as "groups") disproportionately, or are they saying these companies literally hired minorities to place into designated "DEI groups" that could then be fired as a group later when the money runs out?

        Anonymous

I think they're saying developers. But DEI is now its own huge, expensive branch within HR (which does nothing to make video games better or sell better) so those offices were probably hit too. But it would be weird to only enforce DEI policies on certain dev groups. Possibly some dev groups are sophisticated to the point where they are a niche market and not entry level positions, so DEI can't really do anything about them.

They hired beyond their means and they knew it. They made a bunch of expendable positions, told them it wasn't a temp position and then when the time came for the budget to get slashed, did away with the positions. They have been doing this since forever, but they don't usually hire so many people. From ESG money and the pandemic, they knew that a lot of people would be staying at home and have free time and they had a lot of disposible money at that time. So it was easy to hire some idiots, make them work for 2 years and then finally fire them when the money would start to dry up. The issue is that they didn't get the returns they thought they would, because turns out, people don't fricking like ESG bullshit ruining the look and feel of their games.

Massive budgets + game dev times getting to the point of absurdity. Suicide squad took 8 years to develop, the same amount of time it took the original arkham trilogy to develop. It's getting to the point that a single game will take an entire console generation to come out.

Add this to the fact that there's a very real chance the game will just bomb on release and of course companies are realizing this shit isn't sustainable

  30. 3 months ago

If every game tries a live service model, or even shows off a roadmap, do they ultimately believe in infinite growth to some degree? That doesn't seem viable but people don't realize that when money is flying left and right. Seems like developers (at least the AAA ones) are trying to capture that lightning in a bottle. Do people not set some kind of attainable goal that lets them get maybe 500% back what they put into it?

      Anonymous

      >he's absolutely right and the list of live service games that launch and die within a few months continues to grow
Of course they do; most live service games as garbage. So are most traditional AAA games, which makes sense when you consider that they're made by the same companies. It's just that the traditional games don't need to be kept online constantly, once they got your money their job is finished.

      >make game live service
      >rake in the money
      >take that money and invest it in a different product
      >still charge live service prices but dont actually provide live service content
      >people get mad at being scammed
      >oh no why is the game failing how can this happen

the problem is that the industry, in fact most industries at this point, are filled to the brim with grifters, conmen, scammers, and dead weight that just exist to parasitize said industry. Gamers have absolutely no problem what so ever paying for content, for services, ect but what ultimately happens is the publisher takes the money and rolls it into a new product to start the cycle all over again, with the devs and publishers jerking each other off all day long while gamers sit in abandoned products that have been gutted and abandoned. Free money at low interest finally started to die out in the 2020, spooking a lot of investors into being stingier with their money. Then COVID came along and convinced a lot of people that consumers would be spending the rest of time buying a shitload of things online, and a lot of tech companies got a money infusion and massive hiring boost.
Now that AI is the big new thing and investors are being stingy about investing, the bubble tech companies blew up during COVID is bursting.

Tech has enjoyed basically unlimited vulture capital in the past several years because these wienersuckers let them have effectively 0% interest rates for a while. I think at the end of 2022 they upped it to like 3% or something and these losers can't even manage that small amount. And of course the CEOs aren't going to slash their pay when they're so close to being able to get Little Saint James 2 up and running, so the lowborn riffraff get the axe. Extraordinarily simple, the culprit as always is our moronic infinite growth economic models and the sort of insatiable, individualistic hypergreed that only a nightmare hellscape like America can develop. Eventually they'll run out of remora fish idpol losers to cut and your job is next.

Of course they do; most live service games as garbage. So are most traditional AAA games, which makes sense when you consider that they're made by the same companies. It's just that the traditional games don't need to be kept online constantly, once they got your money their job is finished.

    Several reasons.
Chief among which is that global society, and the first-world in particular is still living in an ongoing depression that's lasted nearly 20 years and is rapidly running out of disposable income to use on bread, let alone circuses. When you keep churning out a bunch of shitty entertainment, people are going to spend their limited funds on something that won't be shitty, like food or plumbing. Then your company is going to lose money from not selling so much garbage, and you'll have to cut your losses, which means firing dead weight.

All this can be traced back to one thing, and it's the ridiculously bloated budget for games with millions of dollars going to unnecessary pieces of the whole (particularly marketing).

The industry really needs AA development to come back. Companies need those smaller, weird and creative experiences to help them keep afloat between their massive scope 50 hour long cinematic experience or their massive multi-player GaaS slop. Right now indie games and constant remakes are filling that void, sort of, but not at the same level as back in the 2000's.

AAA gaming is just fricked. Its not that there's one studio working on a game, there's multiple studios contributing to work on just one game, greatly increasing the production costs. And the production costs have generally been increasing over time on the console side to where they're on par with the latest capeshit film if not bigger, so the smaller guys can't ever hope to compete.

Its hard to tell how much input they actually had with Alan Wake 2 besides suggesting "make Saga black". I've looked at the credits and as far as I can tell Sweet Baby didn't seem to have any tangible input into the actual story, that was still mostly Sam Lake as the main creative visionary. The only thing that they're credited with is being "narrative consultants".

In contrast if you look at something like Suicide Squad's fricking feature length credits, there's multiple Sweet Baby members credited as "writers".

I'm not that far in Alan Wake 2 but nothing really stands out in the story to me as "woke", it still feels like a Remedy game. Take that for what it is.

And not fricking garbage like soi squad.

They do this and get shit like baby sweet involved and then have the audacity to act shocked when it gets a bad reception

Games are coming in massively overbudget so that even if a game is successful, it still might not recover its budget. Technically this is "go woke go broke" not in the sense that going woke is driving away customers but DEI hiring has resulted in dev teams being massively bloated with dead weight. In the past, a small team of passionate and skilled devs could deliver quality games on a reasonable budget, but corporations have become massively bloated increases budgets above what can be made back even with a successful game.

Liberals have been screaming about bots since 2016. They can't fathom that there's a sizable number of people who are against them, so they dehumanize them, and say they aren't even real.

For basically a decade these companies existed as adult daycare. You get the right MBA, or meet the right diversity quota, and you just showed up, ate your free breakfast and lunch, shitposted on twitter, and went home. Maybe sent a few emails to be "productive."

I had a friend who worked at Riot Games as a sound designer. Was he the sound designer for a single game? No. He did sound design for League skins. Was he the only person doing that? No. He was part of a team of four. They had four salaried workers making sound effects for League of Legends skins.

god damn lmao, i think at some point these companies started making so much money that they came up with fake jobs to inflate their "growth" rate and appear more important to investors than they really were and when shit hit the fans and costs got higher they are now with their pants down

ESG dried up, that was a program to get companies to hire women and minorities, the problem was a lot of women were not interested in going into gaming so companies would literally just hire whoever to increase their ESG score, they would also pay them way above what they were worth to try to get the average pay of women at or higher than men at the company so they could get more money from ESG investments. Now that the ESG money is drying up, they need to start cutting a lot of the bloat from the make work jobs that existed just to get that money.

Larry Fink literally said they're just going to rename ESG because it has "negative connotations" and that these "behaviors need to be forced". It's just gonna get repackaged.

        Anonymous

Already did that. It's DEI now. It's just gonna be a cat and mouse game of figuring out where the bullshit is flowing, cause it's still definitely flowing.

DEI has been around for a while, that's not the repackaging of it, people are just aware of DEI more now.

the words for moronic/mentally handicapped, disabled people also go through iterations because of the negative connotations that follow as the new derogatory term. Poetic?

I think people are rightfully speculating that they will repackage it and give it a new name for basically the same thing, but for now they are pulling back on it and a lot of these places have no incentive to keep the useless employees around.

I make dating sims where the player has to educate girls using his wiener and I'm doing very well. I recently broke my record for the number of patrons, by the way. I think if you deliver what the audience really wants, you won't have a problem for now.
Maybe in the future with inflation, wars, etc., things will change, but as far as I'm concerned there's nothing to worry about at the moment, consumers are still willing to pay for games, as long as they're games they want to play.

It's the "AAA" bubble bursting. The brain dead corpos are so desperate to uphold "infinite quarterly financial growth" so they can pocket all the cash themselves that they are willing to put band aids on a sinking ship by firing people. The saddest part? When the company does die they'll just take a golden parachute to some island where they can do crack/other drugs and frick underage girls against their will for the rest of their lives.

They blew their loads during the pandemic and overhired like crazy, now they realized people are no longer confined at home playing videogames all day long, so they have to cut the excess people off. People who spend more time engaged in office politics than at work are usually the first ones to go.
