I worked at Gamestop for a few months like a decade ago, and my understanding of why they "gut" copies of video games is so that they can put one of the boxes on the shelf. They only do it to one copy, and if they run out of sealed copies the next customer who wants a new game gets the gutted one. They also let their employees borrow those gutted copies to bring home and play so that they can be better "Game Advisors" so they are 100% full of shit when they tell you it's a "new" game; it's not even new by their own standard which is that it was simply opened but unused.

What they did with Xenoblade due to having exclusivity in America was huge scam that they never really got called out on. They saw that copies were selling for like $100+ so they reprinted it and sold new copies as Used and marked it up to $90.

This happened to me once, the whole trying to sell an opened, unsealed game as new. GameStop is like the Indians of vidya, instead of street merchants sticking their dirty hands into tourist's drinks, we got retail employees scratching up and smearing finger prints on the disc.
Back when Nintendo games came with codes to redeem for points in the Wii era so you could buy shit, I would go to GameStop, open the cases, and take pictures of the codes then go back home and use them on the site. That's how I got the Game and Watch Collections 1 and 2 -- by just stealing a bunch of codes from GameStop "brand new (opened)" boxes.

I don't go into GS often though, usually just to kill time. I remember the days where they fricking shilled preorder garbage and passes and shit like that and I have no doubt that such shills continue to exists elsewhere but my local ones have quietly and slowly moved on.

For big midnight releases I usually call them and ask if I show up at 12:30 without a preorder, can I just buy a leftover copy without messing around with preorder bullshit.
They've always let me, it's usually quick and simple, and they always give or offer me leftover preorder "swag" that they just want rid off.

Last time I went to gamestop to renew my membership and they said I had auto-renew on and they couldn't renew it at the store, I told them I never did that. Found out that a lot of people had it turned on without their permission, so decided to wait till it renewed which it didn't. Go to the store again and they say the same thing that they can't renew it, I tell them that auto-renew did not work and they just didn't care. Would have just got rid of the membership if I did not have so many points on it so I try to renew it myself which fricking sucked. Been a member since gamestop first opened and after I use all my points I'm done with their bullshit.

The reason was because their wife didn’t like him gaming past 10 P.M. since the TV was on (?) and so he wanted to get that handheld PS5 thing so he could game in bed. He said he really liked the souls series but never finished Elden Ring, because he stopped for a month and was lost upon returning.
I went in one a year ago looking for a vita cause I figured that might be new enough that they'd have used ones, and the girl at the counter didn't know what a vita was.

Way, way back in time Gamestop had a campaign where they would give 10€ store credit for any three dvd movies. I dumped all of the most horrible garbage I had and basically got like 200€ free money. They also had pretty good deals back then, lots of games for 10€ with buy two get one for free. This was pre-steam era, where every physical game on the shelf had some quality and value to it.
Since the beginning of steam era I have just pirated everything.
