Valve's employee structure is both a blessing and a curse. When the company was young and hungry, they had to make half-life and portal (more than anything to sell steam) but now? what's the point? Valve employees can just work on useless passion projects that go nowhere all day. To this day I'm surprised we even got Portal 2.
Half life was made possible with the help of basement dweller modders, which Gabe had no trouble paying with his millions of microsoft bucks.
