Literally the exact opposite thing happens in reality. You have better chances just using both hands and trying to hit his legs.
He's going to close the distance between you two whether you have a shield or not. His shield mitigates his reach disadvantage. You don't have a reach disadvantage so you don't need a shield.

If we're counting all short, sharp, bladed one-handed implements that are not swords or axes, I guess. But most of those are going to be civilians murdering other unarmed civilians, not wartime casualties. Handguns probably make up the bulk of small arms deaths, but nobody would ever claim they're the most effective guns period.
