Best way to play em is being good morally for the most part and trolling Jedi and Civilians who are utterly flabbergasted at the very concept of a Sith who is not a psychopath. Also the dash of well deserved ultra violence when appropriate.
Playing any Imperial character is great because you don't have to be a comical, cackling villain, but if people frick with you, or you are pressed into action, it still makes sense that you can just slaughter every fricker in the room instead of showing mercy like the LS or Jedi would demand.
No, you are basically an aristocrat and can play your character as such whether you lean light side or dark.
Going full light side is a bit weird though because "why are you killing jedi for the evil slaver empire again?"

Basically this. Almost every expansion story assumes you're a Jedi and gets really fricking unbearably terrible if you're not. Sith does end up getting quite a bit more bonus story overall though.

Consular and Inquisitor make less sens but still have some interesting angles.

the stuff after the main game (lvl 50+) brings back a lot of characters from the other classes. If you want to get most out of your "complete" playthrough your best move is to finish the class stories first. But that means going through all the planets 8 fricking times, so frick that.
But of course if you have enough cc you can buy an instant level up to 80, and get a free set of high level gear on top, which means you can breeze through the main story. I did it over christmas because I wanted to play through the SW story again. It would be expensive on all 8 characters, but if you're a subscriber you might have a lot of cc build up on your account, and you can knock that down to 6 characters because you should play through all the purple side content at least once.

if you turn on the extra quests option on the big map screen and do those you'll easily outlevel most planets

Yes, I blame EA (and Disney likely), but just having other stuff to unlock without spending doesn't make up for the stuff that requires it either directly or defacto (ie oh you get a free lootbox once in a while. You COULD get the ultra rare thing from your handful of free boxes but with a 1% drop rate its not very likely etc) is shitty. There's also a lot more of it since the game went "freemium" as a justification, and its not like you can just decide to pay a subscription and thus get all the cosmetics included which is how it should have worked. As far as MMOs I've always favored subscription models where you pay your monthly fee and you get all the content cosmetic or otherwise until an expansion shows up which is a one-off purchase. If they split the difference between free with mtx OR subscription without mtx i'd be fine with that compromise, different options etc. However nobody does that because they can get some butthole to spend hundred really going for that sith throne or some other rare item instead of just giving it to everyone who was paying $15/month (or even double/triple that) but they want the FIFA and Genshin audience wallets. So annoying - it not just SWTOR; many MMO do it more or less , FFXIV is pretty bad as wel though without gacha or lootbox stuff, just shitty item malls.

I don't know the specific mechanics of the game, but I tried to ignore all side content when I played SI after SW, and when I got to Alderaan I couldn't advance because I was obviously underleveled getting my ass handed to me by a bunch of 'library guards' or whatever the frick they were. A powerful Sith with a huge ancient force eating monster getting raped by some book cucks. Being lvl 80 with 300+ rated gear makes a difference even if your level is capped on a planet.

They didn't do that but they added beards for women. Completely ruins the random button since now you get a carnival horror show 90% of the time because of the sheer amount of beard options. This 'random' effect happens every time you switch to female in the character creator. I got a female chiss with stubble the first time I went in to the new creator and I thought my game glitched.

Its a pity that they fricked up so badly in many way. I played at release but by the time the overhauled it for "freemium' mode and started adding gacha garbage, that was frustrating. I was happy to pay a subscription to get the whole game until i had to buy one off expansions, but the adding an item mall for cosmetics and otherwise was bad enough, then they added 'oh we have random boxes, the super fancy sith throne everyone wants has a 2% drop rate from them and its the only way to get it". Infuriating considering that the overall story elements weren't actually horrid.
The other issue was that the sub classes were not visually distinct. Some advance subclasss got a fancy visually unique class weapon or gear, others got an invisible fricking stat stick. For instance, I started as an Imperial Agent (Chiss of course) which used a blaster rifle sort of thing and had gadgets and the like. Once you made it to promotion, you could pick either Sniper which had unique Sniper Rifles that looked different from the standard blasters and were used in the Sniper's unique abilities and standard attacks alike....or Operative. Operative got no special gear visible, used the stupid blaster rifle, and the closest thing to the unique they got was a Vibroknife that was an invisible stat stick! Frick that garbage! Same was true of the two options for Smuggler as I recall- one got to dual wield blaster pistols which functioned as standard blasters , the other got an invisible stat stick scattergun thing that didn't even have a unique appearance when you used an ability, it just (like the Operative's knife) proc'd a canned animation. There was a lot of this bullshit. For force users it wasn't AS bad but it was split between the "you get 2 lightsabers to dual wield, or a saberstaff, all visible and customizable" classes vs "you just get a standard single saber and an invisible shield generator thing". Seemed such shitty design to make half promotions visually crap

I decided to try a couple of years ago when I found out it had gone f2p, and was pleasantly surprised to find some of the class stories were pretty good, as others have pointed out, especially compared what we are used to now.
i think the absolute shit that gets released nowadays makes the shit from back then look good in comparison.
I think it's twofold. The game industry is so shit that even a mediocre game from more than a decade ago is better than most modern trash. And it's the only pre-Disney Star Wars thing out there that's active and the decline of that franchise also makes the old stuff here look much better by comparison.

They don't have the best 1-50 story, that goes to Agent, but the 1-50 story is decent enough, and more importantly pretty much all the post 50 content is designed around being either a Jedi Knight or Sith Warrior in terms of the story. You end up going up against a lot of tough Jedi/Sith characters and become a leader and all kinds of shit that is basically tailor designed with Jedi Knight / Sith Warrior in mind.
"Good" Sith Warrior is legitimately hilarious at times. You absolutely dumbfound most of the Sith by being able to get shit done without being a total wiener.

The latest expac is pretty bad, and honestly I haven't been a fan of any of them other than KoTFE, I thought KoTET was pretty bad in comparison. Also got fricking sick of skytroopers.
Any force user is preferred but Knight and Warrior are by far the best choices and feel like the main characters of the Republic and Empire side respectively. Class stories are fine until 50 if you really don't want to play a force user but going through all the expansions with them feels silly.

If you pick a shadow build it gives you a double bladed lightsaber and you just play as a shadow. You cannot, for example, play as a warrior with the warrior skills but a double saber.

Consular is practically 50 levels of "you're a side character from a star wars movie investigating background shit nobody gives a frick about while John Protagonist and his angry counterpart are doing big Emperor shit"
Consular is like the Qui Gon class where you're all about forging alliances, being the giga redeemer (at least in LS) and uh I guess investigating some ancient Jedi secrets I completely forgot about in chapter 1. I thought it was okay.

Stealth class is a must if you want to finish all the quests with the least amount of repetitive fighting. I made a JC Sage/Jugg and as much as I love her, the amount of bullshit encounters I get into wears on my patience.

How painful is the f2p? I remember hearing that there is a level cap and inventory restrictions. I'm thinking of just playing for the plot since we won't get anymore KOTOR games.
It's not worth it if you're not going to at least be a preferred member
You can complete the class stories you want perfectly fine without having to spend a penny
You can unlock some more inventory space with normal credits you earn but its hardly necessary, at least from my experience
