I probably had the most fun playing Median XL over classic/D2R. I really enjoyed the difficult endgame content. Though tbh I can't find a reason to play ARPGs beyond beating them once unless they have good challenging endgame to justify farming. I didn't play the others so I won't comment.

PD2 probably has the best balance, qol, graphics (lol), and largest community/economy with a decent trade site now. Sounds like shilling but idk bro I really like the mod I think they do great.
MXL has a very fun progression but kinda plays like shit with needing d2stats open and the configs feeling like shit unless they changed that. Also it always seemed like literally only 10 people were playing at a time which idk isn’t enjoyable.
I haven’t followed PoD but my friends who played just prefer pd2.
Otherwise just play d2r if you want the normal experience and aren’t a contrarian against anything that’s new.
MXL has god tier progression, it feels really damn good to go from struggling against a good boss fight, to finally getting a kill, to coming back once stronger to farm it for a trophy.
It seems like they're working on making the stat screen include all the info you want/need from d2stats, but I don't think the item filter features are planned or at least in yet, though last I played was a couple seasons ago.
First week of a season usually has a lot of activity, but drops off heavily after week 2 because most people that play it are ultraspergs and have played it for a decade.
Overall I think MedianXL is one of the best ARPG experiences, it's really impressive what they've done with such an old engine and it keeps getting better. I know it's hella unrealistic and I doubt the devs would even want the burden and responsibility but frick I wish they would get funding and stuff to make their own paid game out of it.

diablo I is a pretty good game, very straightforward, you go down a dungeon, get to hell and kill diablo. solid gameplay, overall very atmospheric with some real nice visuals and music
diablo II retains the excellent aesthetics but its also a really boring grindfest with shittier level design which only really gets good at the very last act

It starts with the stats. 'Souless' would not describe it fully. It steals something from you; you'll never become immersed in an ARPG ever again after perusing Diablo 4's stats.

They made them so simple, like "damage to injured enemies" so that you do more damage to enemies at low health. They made "vulnerable" so you do damage to whatever that debuff is supposed to be. They made all the stats dumbed down and random, and they don't even give you a proper indicator of your character's overall dps.
It's hard to describe but he's right. The items are garbage because of garbage stat affixes on items. They're so built to be non-helpful to your character in any sizeable way. So you'll just look at the Armor number and DPS number and call it a day, which is why it has the little green number by them. Armor is better than anything in the game and so is DPS. Therefore, for matters of speed and efficiency, you shouldn't even worry about picking up lots of yellow items to look through them and waste your time.

it easily beats out the unique scythe that keeps dropping to, the one with slow on shadow damage. can't remember the name of it but the damage difference is vast.
Yeah, that happens once you get to Nightmare. It seems that almost as soon as you get into Nightmare and start looking around, you'll find one really high DPS yellow and never find another one ever again, like it's scripted.

I really fricking loved Median XL when I played it 2-3 years ago but I played at the ass end of ladder and couldn't trade jack shit online and I'm pretty sure offline had no loot goblins or something. Is the state of the mod pretty decent right now? Is SSF offline viable to push all content? There was so much endgame shit to enjoy on a single character, is there even anything like that these days? It's been a while since I played an ARPG and D4 looks like fricking shit. Is D3 endgame any good?
