burning rangers looks terrible in motion. Not just the abysmal framerate, but the janky rendering where tiles on the edges of the screen glitch in and out of existence.
Im tired of this meme, that game runs like ass. I've never played a game from that era with so much extra pop in/out and tile clipping. I know the Saturn was dying and was never good with 3D graphics but its crazy they put the game out in the state that it was in.
Yeah that game fricking sucks. What if we make a shooter where you just shoot at stationary fires? Amazing. No time to make a game, let's just randomly generate the order the rooms are in and put a score counter on it. It plays like a 6th gen shovelware movie game. Nevermind the tech demo graphics that the machine simply can't render in time
Cool but they are 16-bit 2D games originally. Saturn is a 32-bit 5th gen console so for context we should be checking 3D games. I'd say Quake is the best looking for the hardware.
Probably that hellslave homebrew game in terms of most impressive. As for plain style, I just havent felt moved by anything. I think bulk slash is gorgeous with a mask and scanlines. I guess I have to pick that
If you like Ninpen Manmaru, check out Toree 3D 1 and 2, they were designed to look like early 3D platformers and takes most of its play-style from Manmaru.
Considering that Saturn CotA has worse animation than Alpha 2 when it was the other way around in the arcade versions, I can only say that this port is very disappointing visually. Besides it doesn't 'push' anything. Both ports have the same limited VRAM which you can't go around. CotA has to waste it on background elements, larger special effects sprites and Juggernaut. Alpha 2 has no such issues and thus it looks very close to the arcade version. CotA should've been delayed until 1Mb RAM cart appeared honestly. It looks great only in the same vein as SNES Alpha 2 looks great: impressive that they managed to cram it onto limited hardware but disappointing compared to the arcade version or SNES exclusive Gundam Wing game.
Alpha 2 is a fricking miracle. KoF 96 and RBFF1 used ram cart and still were more cut down despite being on the same technical level.
XMCotA port is cool but put it next to the arcade cab and you won't be able to unsee how much worse it is.
Depends on what you want from it. Graphically it's arcade perfect but like all other CPS2 ports it runs at a different resolution making the sprites appear bigger.
Framedata wise it's changed from the arcade version and is not suitable for training if you're into A3 competitive. Same as Dreamcast version. Fun fact: PS1 port despite being more cut down graphically has framedata closer to the CPS2 version than other ports.
Unironically Nights because it received the most development attention and support out of any game for the system but it's not a good game so who cares.
Sega arcade games in the mid-90's were hugely popular in Japan, they were kind of free advertising for the promise of what Sega's first, full 3D console could do, and then Saturn kind of inherited being the "otaku" system from the PC Engine when NEC dropped the ball with the PC-FX.
>Why was this shit so popular in Japan?
Half the library is adult VNs and anime strip Mahjong titles and the ads had a Kamen Rider dressed up as a karateka from a Kurosawa movie, choking teenagers to death because they went clubbing instead of staying home and playing console games.
here are some
super tempo
daytona ce (not cce)
bulk slash
stellar assualt ss
advanced world war
touge drift king 2
choro q park
and many other rpgs and shmups and platformers
I was thinking of buying a jp saturn, mostly for the cheaper cost and I like the lighter colors and I guess I could modchip it. Is there anything I should look out for or any differences between the white and grey models? Does the grey look nice in person?
Why bother with a modchip when you can get a pseudo saturn cart for cheap or spend some extra money for an ODE like saroo. I've been on the fence too about getting a saturn for years but I finally decided not to because there's really not many exclusives at all. You're better off with a ps1.
go for it, the aesthetic is instantly ruined by the chink cart sticking out at the top. >got myself a recapped pre-modded disk drive for my saturn ages ago for like $70~ish
If anyone wanted a fenrir and to keep the disc drive, the last ever 21 pin versions of the disc switch thing are being sold right now. After that I assume fenrir will just fade in obscurity as that saroo cart thing is developed
these:
touge king 2
the lobotomy games
stellar assault ss
burning rangers
shutokou battle 97
super tempo
outrun
street racer
virtua fighter 2
dead or alive
zero divide
panzer dragoon 2/saga

The Sega Saturn is not just a gaming console, it is an interdimensional portal that transcends time and space. For many, it has manifested itself in recent years, as they were unable to perceive it in its original time frame. Why is this? Because those who are drawn to the Saturn come from another dimension - the Saturn dimension.
The hexagonal north pole of the Saturn planet is a direct gateway to this dimension - a realm of dreams and mysteries, where the Sega Saturn reigns supreme. It is a place where the lines between reality and fantasy blur, and where our innermost desires are given form.
The symbolisms of the Saturn dimension are occult and esoteric, reflecting the deep and primal impulses of the human psyche. Through the Saturn, we can tap into these forces, using them to create new realities and explore the hidden depths of our soul.
So let us embrace the Sega Saturn as a tool of transcendence, a portal to other worlds and dimensions. Let us explore the hexagonal mysteries of the north pole, unlocking the secrets of this cosmic gateway. And let us remember that the Saturn is not just a console - it is a manifestation of our own dreams and desires, a gateway to the infinite possibilities of the universe.
Probably Dungeons and Dragons. They are inherently more graphically impressive than fighting games because there are more than 2 sprites on screen at once and the levels are bigger.
Not optimal to play on the Saturn these days due to load times.
I got mine from etro gaming cables. But while I was waiting the three weeks for it to come in the mail, I used one from Amazon that was like 5 bucks and came the next day. And it looked fricking great until the better one came in.
If you're not trying to get the best quality then I wouldnt even bother with the expensive cable. But the cheap ones aren't shielded. There's going to be something going on. Unless you want the best, I would just get the cheap one and upgrade if you aren't satisfied
Most SS games that I can think of have been mentioned (Grandia, Radiant Silvergun, Metal Slug, SoTN, Panzer Dragoon 2, etc.) but...
The Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 CD collection.
It's beautifully animated and has added stuff for the Saturn version like Blue Mary singing for the ending of RBFFS.
edit: it's called "Real Bout Garou Densetsu Best Collection"
Once again we must ask, are you a Mai or Blue Mary fan?
Powerslave has some pretty impressive looking lighting effects
Burning Rangers. If occasional drops to single digit frame rates don't bother you
burning rangers looks terrible in motion. Not just the abysmal framerate, but the janky rendering where tiles on the edges of the screen glitch in and out of existence.
>If occasional drops to single digit frame rates
I've played the jap version and the frame rate isn't that bad
Im tired of this meme, that game runs like ass. I've never played a game from that era with so much extra pop in/out and tile clipping. I know the Saturn was dying and was never good with 3D graphics but its crazy they put the game out in the state that it was in.

The opening theme rules though. Then the game is nothing but sound effects during gameplay.
Vampire Savior

>16-bit
Any capcom fighter.
3D: Burning Rangers
2D: Dungeons & Dragons - Shadow over Mystara
>2D: Dungeons & Dragons - Shadow over Mystara
I actually beat it last month (finally) and the animations and fluidity are still amazing.
Out of those I played I would say that panzer dragoon 2 has the best 3d graphics
Probably that hellslave homebrew game in terms of most impressive. As for plain style, I just havent felt moved by anything. I think bulk slash is gorgeous with a mask and scanlines. I guess I have to pick that
I love how bulk slash looks
That ninja penguin game for babies looks nice
If you like Ninpen Manmaru, check out Toree 3D 1 and 2, they were designed to look like early 3D platformers and takes most of its play-style from Manmaru.
3D Virtua Fighter Kids
2D X-Men COTA, CyberBots, Sengoku Blade, Pocket Fighter
CotA is very cut down. Rather mention 4Mb RAM cart games like vampire Savior and XMvsSF.
>very cut down
It is a very impressive port for the stock console and loads very quickly
SFA2 is more impressive as a port because it's almost intact
>being intact is more impressive than pushing graphics beyond their limit
?

Vampire Savior on the other hand:
Who cares if it uses rom cart? It's less cheating than putting an entire CPU which runs at 3x speed of the stock one into a SNES cart.
How is the alpha 3 port on Saturn?
Depends on what you want from it. Graphically it's arcade perfect but like all other CPS2 ports it runs at a different resolution making the sprites appear bigger.
Framedata wise it's changed from the arcade version and is not suitable for training if you're into A3 competitive. Same as Dreamcast version. Fun fact: PS1 port despite being more cut down graphically has framedata closer to the CPS2 version than other ports.

OK blind Naka hater. Take meds NOW
Bro you play as a gay clown flying through rings
If you identify with that, it's not my problem
For 3d I’d say Panzer Dragoon Zwei.
For 2d Id go with the Capcom Fighters. Plenty of decent looking games for the time. Plenty of shit too, though.
Why was this shit so popular in Japan?

I own 5 saturn games already and would mod it mostly for region-free and the odd cd-r backup.
the pseudo saturn cart plays backups and games from all regions.
go for it, the aesthetic is instantly ruined by the chink cart sticking out at the top.
>got myself a recapped pre-modded disk drive for my saturn ages ago for like $70~ish
Get a Satiator and you don't have to do any mods, also if you want it to be "region free" just get an Action Replay cart.
Don't listen to these shills, the saroo is half the price.
How is the Saroo? it seems to be the only ODE that uses the cart slot. can you use it as a ram cart and flash cart at the same time?
>don't listen to satiator shills
>get saroo instead
>ok, what's good about it
>.....
you're not doing a good job shilling it to me.
I even posted a nice picture of the shells.
I too wanted to hear more about the Satroo. It seems like they might now be fully finished I suppose.
Get a Satiator instead. Yes, it costs more, but you don't have to bother with hardmods and it won't replace your CD drive like other ODEs
I got a Fenrir Japanese Model 1. It's amazing.
don't get a white Saturn unless you are ok with extreme yellowing
>Does the grey look nice in person?
it does look cool and i think its the best looking saturn of them all
The "best looking" Saturn is the clear/smoke "This is Cool" edition
I'm not a big fan of le epic transparent shell
>also round buttons
also round buttons
If anyone wanted a fenrir and to keep the disc drive, the last ever 21 pin versions of the disc switch thing are being sold right now. After that I assume fenrir will just fade in obscurity as that saroo cart thing is developed
Alright but what jap model of the saturn should I get? Is the new white model more reliable or is it a cheaper construction?
frick off ai gay
There's no way that's AI look closely anon
>smooth colors
>nonsense on the shirt
>everything is weird
im 90% sure its ai

Anyone have the saturn component cables? Want the best quality for my consumer trinitron.
I got mine from etro gaming cables. But while I was waiting the three weeks for it to come in the mail, I used one from Amazon that was like 5 bucks and came the next day. And it looked fricking great until the better one came in.
How would you describe the difference?

Panzer Dragoon
Tomb Raider
Burning Ranger
GunGriffon
Nights
Grandia
2D is entirely subjective but I vote for SoTN
Sega Saturn de Hakken Tamagotchi Park.
