Hands down No Mercy, easily the best of L4D1
Death Toll is alright. Not much to say about it.
Dead Airs first half is amazing, 2nd half boring and also the worst finale.
Blood Harvest is fun when you play it but one of the most forgettable campaigns ever. It has no good set pieces
does anybody else think about how unnecessary the horde moments are sometimes? like, you are asked to do something that sets an alarm on when you could easily jump around some fence.
this is not to shit on the game, i love it. I just like thinking about these things. what event would be easily skippable to you?
No this game is super fricking easy and only SI can really damage the survivors, its clear they wanted regular infected to be somewhat of a threat so this is how they tried it. Hordes that don't end are actually challenging but trivialised by bile
That's not true at all.
The only reason you're free to talk shit about commons is because the director regulates their spawns constantly for gameplay flow.
If every area was full of them they would be a much bigger problem.
Thank the director for barely spawning any in more than half of the campaign, homosexual.
normal/versus isn't real Left for Dead
also you're wrong, you obviously have no idea what the game would look like if the director didn't constantly let you have an open path
I didnt explain myself clearly. ofc horde moments are necessary for gameplay. im just talking about horde events like when you use a van at the airport's entrance to crash over some easily climbable fences. im talking about
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InsurmountableWaistHeightFence
There's something nice about the simplicity of the weapons and smaller pool of the original Special Infected. And other things like the general atmosphere of the original campaigns, the UI, viewmodel size, and random junk like actually seeing your characters legs when you look down.
None of the new special infected are actually fun, they're just annoying. The first game already covered all the meaningful threats. >hunters punish stragglers/rushers >smokers pull people out of the group >tank is tank
You can knock people out of bounds well but the job of separating from the pack is made harder than smoker because of how vulnerable you are to get a hit

Yes, but charger doesn't necessarily need to capture a survivor to be good. Going in with punches while the surv are boomed and low on health can be a game changer, something none of the other si (except) tank can do well.

nah bro.
Charger is definitely one of the top special infected. Even outside instant-kill zones, he has a lot of strengths in his HP pool, punches, the ability to strike all four survivors at one and the fact that a successful hit will always do a big chunk of damage while the other special infected only have Damage Over Time.
He's not exactly the best SI for opening an attack because of how easily he can get focused down and how telegraphed a charge is, but the Charger can destroy teams who are even moderately distracted or swarmed.

>special infected only have Damage Over Time.
minus Hunter pounces, I forgot.

Seems extremely map dependant to be useful. All the SI from 1 were universal in a way that their strengths and weaknesses are apparent on every map
I just feel like charger can be God tier in a chokepoint and less that useless in any open defense area

Anonymous
>open defense area
all the SI are really bad in open areas. This isn't really exclusive to the charger.

Anonymous
Sort of. I think smoker is the best for open areas because you only need a single corner to hide behind and snipe the first person who wanders into view
I also think a good hunter pounce from behind can turn the tide of an open defense in favor of infected. Forcing the team to turn around and getting the initial hit is so huge. Even the standing up animation delays then enough to put extra pressure from the front. Charger has such a hard time closing the gap because he's massive target and the extra health barely offsets that

Hence why I mentioned he's not the best attack opener (unless he can just spawn and charge).
But I feel like we shouldn't act like SI attack the survivors one at a time. A single hunter, smoker, charger or jokey will just instantly get cleared by the survivors if they run in alone. You always need an element of coordination in an attack.
take this clip
?t=215
(time stamp 3:35.) Hunter opens, instantly cleared. Charger charges the survivors as and smacks coach and ellis for big damage.

Yeah so his power definitely comes from coordinating with other infected. Seems cool.
I spent most of my time in l4d2 making mods and playing them in local servers but I wanted to learn versus finally. The community just seems so autismic and you always hear horror stories of them kicking you for missing a single pounce or whatever. Idk I've only just started versus so and I haven't had that experience yet, maybe I'm just not moronic
Thanks for the clip I appreciate the explanations

I drew up this post last year. Maybe you'll find it useful.

Because L4D2 might be a bit obtuse, I thought I might try to compile list of some useful guides for players to help them
Ironbeard has guides for Survivors, Special Infected and the Tank. Useful for picking up basics of gameplay and some of the more obscure stuff (like survivor lag).
The Bile is a Korean player who just compiles a lot of footage of Charger instant kills. Great for learning charge spots and Jockey/Smoker/Charger combos.
https://www.youtube.com/user/ProdigySim/videos
https://www.youtube.com/user/garrettofpwnage/videos
https://www.youtube.com/user/killatoy/videos
ProdigySim, Kissme, killatoy were/are all community organizers for the L4D competitive community and all have a lot of old VoDs. Great for watching a lot of the teamwork on both sides of L4D2 versus.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXTaoOStcTjSmvHi1kNNKfmgDxyfF5uiZ
Xbye is in the same group, but he also hosted Left 2 Learn, which were similar versus games with an emphasis on teaching. All the teams here were less experienced.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAD49AFC2867B84C1
Bad Team Theatre is just old L4D culture which "showcases" just how poor teams could frick everything up. It's mostly just entertainment, but you still might pick something up.
Can you explain what chargers use is? Spitter is pretty obvious and infected having a Molotov equivalent was a great addition but I'll always say charger is the worst SI in the game
Also, charger can collateral survivors, has second-highest hp, and a good spit combo wrecks the enemy team in tight corridors and spaces

I guess they are utilitarian more than big damage or disabling pins. Seems like they need to play off another SI to get the best results and I was only really considering the SI abilities in a vaccuum
I love Left 4 Dead 2 but I had to stop playing because the pained screams when survivors are down became too much. Francis, Coach and Zoey are unbearable
At one point I'd mute my desktop whenever a survivor got downed. Luckily I only played single player
I was too lazy to make my own mod to get rid of them and I never found one.
If you could add a new special infected to the game what would you do?
I would either add a flying enemy that acts as an alarm and spawns common infected and summons them to specific areas with screams
Or I would want a way to control a swarm of common directly and flood them through specific areas. I just love the animation system for commons and wish versus players got to manipulate them somehow
I’ve done so much no mercy that o have to say it’s the best map.
I like dark carnival, dead air, swamp, the parish
Best thing was ringing the chargers bell mid charge with a two blast with the shotty then hitting it with a bat.
Blood Harvest is my favorite simply because of the finale. the crops obscure the infected until they're really close and the house gets becomes less and less safe as walls, windows, and doors get smashed apart.
Dead Center, far and away the best one. Helps that the L4D2 characters far outshine the L4D1 characters in terms of personality and humor (even if Rochelle fails a bit in that regard, she still has some good lines now and again). Bill and especially Francis are so fricking annoying and I'm tired of pretending that's not the case.
L4D was never a horror game, dumbass. The entirety of both games parody zombie movie tropes, even down to the loading screens being movie posters for the given campaign.
i've played all the main campaigns so many times, that playing other maps feels weird anyway
even all the official "dlc" released maps feel so forgettable and generic to me
>can't host custom maps that have L4D1 survivors with friends because the game always crashes when we get the safehouse map transition
Why have they never fixed this annoys the shit out of me
>Host Yama Versus >Somehow get a full lobby >First half of first round goes fine >Second half starts >Starting saferoom door just isnt there >No weapons or health kits in spawn
I wonder why. Fallen is the far superior L4D1 custom map anyway.
Is L4D2 still alive? I kind of want to reinstall but I feel like versus would be full or the ultra try hards with 60k+ hours in the game who only stick around due to sunk cost fallacy. You can play L4D1 via L4D2 now right?
I also remember a time when if you did it right, as infected, you could spawn inside the survivors. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a game when you got boomer and spawned inside one of them. Also crouch walking was fun as frick too.
>Is L4D2 still alive? >You can play L4D1 via L4D2 now right?
yeah
I kind of want to reinstall but I feel like versus would be full or the ultra try hards with 60k+ hours in the game who only stick around due to sunk cost fallacy.
yeah that's the problem, current versus community on public servers is toxic and garbage, you'll be lucky if you can play one game without people ragequitting or votekicking
I can link my workshop list. I am not quite done with it but it's a good jumping off point. I'm going to replace all the RNG infected with a custom version to increase compatibility eventually
One sec I'll get a link
And also check out the other lists people make that attempt similar stuff

just feel free to ignore the survivor reskins and weapons if you dont like them, there are HD versions of all the vanilla weapons available too
mostly this will get you the better physics and mod libraries for other stuff, and a bunch of HD items and environment textures
Workshop because 0 effort it just werks, moddb, fpsbanana, random half dead specialty sites that only hispanics still use.
What is it with the chinese and this game though, goddamn.
Most kids will explain what they are on the workshop, so any purely cosmetic stuff will work on official servers.
There are also weapon replacements that come with scripts so they actually function differently, changes to physics are possible, AI improvements etc. But those will only work on a local hosted server.
There's some really cool stuff still being made for the game. I'm working on an RNG pack for all the SI of both games so every time you see one it's dressed a little different
That sounds like fun. I want to reinstall but at the end of the day I know I'll play for 10 minutes, uninstall and go back to VNs. I can't even bring myself to play anything else anymore, I just don't fricking care.
dead center, idk I just never get tired of it, both that and dark carnival being back to back almost gurantees a few hours out of me anytime i boot up l4d, it still amazes me how fricking good that game is.

That one custom map I played. I forgot the name but it was really really good. Promise.
that one
especially when you get tank to smack people off the roof
for me, it's dead air
Portal 1 is the only good thing to come out of valve.
The one where the plane crashes at the end of the level because it blew my mind the first time I played the game

Charger and Spitter actually fulfill a necessary niche, Jockey sucks ass though.
Can you explain what chargers use is? Spitter is pretty obvious and infected having a Molotov equivalent was a great addition but I'll always say charger is the worst SI in the game
Sending everyone flying like bowling pins, especially in hallways and alleys, and forcing the survivors to be more aware of death pits
Also, charger can collateral survivors, has second-highest hp, and a good spit combo wrecks the enemy team in tight corridors and spaces
I guess they are utilitarian more than big damage or disabling pins. Seems like they need to play off another SI to get the best results and I was only really considering the SI abilities in a vaccuum
l4d2 is soulless
The only thing that I hate about l4d2 is that they removed the visible player legs from 1
Other than that it's just a big expansion pack
it just dooesnt capture the magic
Why did they remove the legs?
No idea. There's a mod to bring them back for 2 but it's only works on listen servers and locally, not dedicated servers
nah.
especially after the shitshow that was a bunch of moron comp gays (who somehow fricking exist for l4d) idea of a patch.
I like the simplicity of 1
Knocking people off the construction site will never not be funny
Parish, Crash Course, Hard Rain and Death Toll
I don't know about best but no mercy has been my favorite since I first played the l4d1 demo. I like the mood of the city more than any other campaign
Same. Also Zoey sex.
I love Left 4 Dead 2 but I had to stop playing because the pained screams when survivors are down became too much. Francis, Coach and Zoey are unbearable

L4D2: Dark Carnival
