    everquest 1.
everything after that was just chasing casual bux and copycat bullshit (okay, vanguard would have been okay had it been released a few years later to let hardware catch up)

but after eq, the emphasis seemed to switch to fast paced arcade style combat and huge open-world areas with maybe a quest hub here and there, dungeons were instanced, and populated via matchmaking groups. there is no downtime to socialize or chat. the whole point of an MMO was that it involved other players.

so you have these games that let you solo most (if not all) of the content, and when you do need a group it's match-making with randos who you'll never really group with again, or ever get to know. there's no community, no sense of an in-game world.

to put this in context, one of the first dungeons in EQ (guk) had respawn times of 27 minutes. the downtime lent itself to actually interacting with people. it sounds archaic today, but that's because your zoomer brains are one non-stop serotonin drip and social media and smart phones have fried your attention spans beyond salvage.

The amount of Gankertard contraian AULDE GUD NU BAD permiating this post could be harnessed as a new power source.

That's not a refutation though, like at all.
my post wasn't about old vs new; it's game design reinforcing sociability vs zoomer zero attention span bullshit.

i'm a millennial who played everquest and i can assure you that everquest was (and still is) trash, enforcing sociability with internet strangers is of dubious value, and if you really liked everquest you would be playing it in 2023

i still play on p1999 occasionally. Stopped when we moved out into the woods a few years ago and having to rely on viasat for internet; impossible to game on that. Odd that a dialup connection from 1998 was more reliable for eq than sat was in 2019. Using starlink now, so it's much more playable. might need to get back into it.

That said though, mudflation puts a bit of an expiration date on MMO's though. Also the advent of mercs and other ezpz leveling has killed the community; there isn't anything going on until you hit raid end game.

again i think the main problem is that attention spans have dwindled unto nothing these days
if it's not a constant stream of
            >bing bing
            >wahoo
the dopamine receptors start going into withdrawal and that's that.

If your MMO is awfully designed without enough goldsinks yeah

well there's that for sure, but also with each expansion and/or level cap increase, more and more content (zones and items) gets continually trivialized.
saw this in eq for example, a midrange weapon from vanilla would be completely outclassed by a similar level item from kunark
or once paludal caverns hit there was no reason to go anywhere else between levels 10 and 25 or so.

i can't think of a single MMO that doesn't fall victim to this trap =/

The cancer that killed MMORPGs. WoW was merely a symptom of eq poopsockers spreading their ideas.

lmao why are you acting like no one here has ever waited afk for a boss to respawn. New World had that and it was as boring as it sounds.

        blizzard: diversity in action.
        >start out as small studio. make timeless, beloved games and IP's.
        >be mostly white asian dudes who love games
        >hold up, we need to be more diverse! it's a strength, for reasons we can't explain, but it's good!

a tale as old as time. blue haired troons and progressives can't make anything worth playing. but they have the right pronouns, and the right political stickers on their macbooks.

Yes, anon pronouns in twitter profiles are what made blizzard bad. No being eaten from the inside out by Activision, no siree.
Remember never blame corporations, they're your friends. Good /misc/slave.

hiring those 'people' to write your game and make game design decisions is obviously going to be bad for any kind of actual game vs agitprop vehicle, yes. But you are right, activision didn't help. and honestly, mega corp acquisitions ruin any kind of creative endeavor -- with having to answer to shareholders being a close runner up in terms of damage.

            >it's a strength, for reasons we can't explain
nice strawman, it's obviously beneficial to have a diverse variety of backgrounds and experiences for us to learn from each other, solve problems, and grow as people.

            >diversity of opinion and experience only comes from people who look different.
            >being this absolutely mindfricked by progressive thinking

wow has more dynamic and interactive world and game systems, ff14 has a solid overarching story, good ex/savage/ultimate fights and the daddy issue and bpd ridden prostitutes you can voice call on discord and hear moan out your name within four hours of meeting them in limsa are nothing to scoff at either.

A year ago I would have said Vanilla Aion
But then they released classic Aion and it got absolutely fricked over in the same way Worlo classic did, min-max to the max, cheating, botting, and worst of all GDKP runs or outright RMT.

homosexuals would do stuff like, instead of selling or hey even giving loots that were BiS to their healer or support, they would just sell it for real money to another guild.

      That's shitty.

RIFT did a 'classic' server too a few years back and it was just old content in current RIFT on current client lol, completely half-assed.

Lads...how do we make tab-target combat more engaging?
I've been thinking about it the last couple of days. How do you break the rotation meta meta?
I was thinking some sort of deckbuilding/cardgame style combat where your abilities available every gcd cycle changes, but that might be too much of a burden on servers for anything that isn't a AAA production.

mmos are shit, especially those two. one is a boring and soulless piece of crap crafted by a company mired in bureaucracy. the other is a glorified visual novel marketed as something else
