What is the best Playstation 2 model?

I have read that the slim models of PS2 came with failures in the flex and always scratched the disc

On the other hand, i have read that the FAT models overheated but that they were much more durable and had a much longer life expectancy than the slim models

In addition to this, what other differences made one better than the other? In general, what model is better?
I know that there were also "sub-models" of the Fat and Slim family as shown in picrelated

My FAT model's fan stopped working and it died on me. The thin one doesn't need a fan and it has less moving parts. The thin models are better but they fundamentally load the games the same way.

What matters most to me to know is within the software. Does one model render the games better than the other model?
You know, is one model faster loading games (loading screens, FPS, etc) than other model? If does, what is that model?

Sure some models have slightly faster disk load speed but that shit is only actually relivant to speedruners who are trying to save two minutes of load time over the course of a 6 hour run. It's a non issue for anyone casually playing games.

only matters if you want to play ps1 games. fat PS2 plays them natively but slim ps2 emulates. I've never had any issues playing ps1 games on my slim and im pretty autistic about noticing the differences

Thanks, this partially answers my question here

i made a diy case for the 70000 model
and i found out its possible possible to mod it to have an ssd
so i would say FAT or modded SCPH-70000

No problem. If you go with a slim listen to this anon and make sure you get the right model number. The ones after SCPH-70000 can't be soft modded. I bought a preloaded memory card with freemcboot on it years ago and it still works great for playing stuff over USB or burnt discs on my slim.

wrong, every model can be softmodded
the later ones just have a different way of doing it

I’ve still got my launch PS2, and it still works well. The disc drive only reads CDs consistently nowadays, but I threw an SSD full of games in there.
I also have the middle model there and had the ribbon cable on the laser lift up sometime in 2018 (had owned it since 2004). The ribbon cable will likely destroy any disc the console is reading by scratching a huge ring into it. Luckily for me, that game was DMC2. I taped the ribbon cable back into place right after this happened and have had no problems since, but I understandably don’t like to use it play discs unless I have to.

Long story short, I think you can’t go wrong with a fat if you plan to play your games from an internal hard drive. The most recent slim PS2 is a safer choice over the initial model because of the ribbon cable issue, but the ribbon cable malfunction doesn’t doom the console to being a paperweight either.
Both models of slim are noteworthy for having built-in Ethernet ports, so you can also forgo discs altogether and just play games from a hard drive connected to your home network if you want to.

This is worth considering as well. I can only think of one PS1 game off the top of my head that doesn’t emulate correctly: Gradius Gaiden. If you want to play Gradius Gaiden to completion on a PS2, buy a fat.

Which slim model doesn't have the ribbon cable issue again? I know for a fact that there's a slim model that has something else in it that keeps the ribbon cable from lifting.

The one on the right, the 90000. Thankfully, you can tell it apart from the older Slims at a glance.

This is fricked I had a slim PS2 and used to throw it on the ground if I ever needed to move it, and I never had issues with it but here people are talking about soldering new fans on and shit

You might have had one of the newer models of the Slim. The one I had is the one in the middle, and the ribbon cable lifted up while I was playing a game, rendering it unplayable.

    here's what you do
    >buy a fat ps2
    >buy a 14mm noctua fan
    >solder the new fan in, stick it to the edge of the case with double sided tape
    >get a sata adapter to add a hdd
    >buy a premade openloader memory card for good measure
    >pirate the shit out of games

There's a dude who sells a 3D printed mount to install a noctua fan on to your PS2. I bought one and put it on mine and it's awesome. Original fan sounded like an airplane and hardly even cooled.

Also got a 1TB HDD with a chinese SATA to IDE adapter. Filled it with every PS2 game I'd ever heard of. Peak gaming machine.

The downside is it's a pain to put them onto the HDD into the first place.

For me, it's model number 39000, the most reliable and therefore the best PS2. You cannot refute this.

in the hierarchy of most reliable durable consoles where does the ps2 land

Every time I play a game on my slim there's that tension of when it boots to the browser info screen for a few frames then the games plays. cds don't play any more. have had it almost two decades but how easy is it to get one nowadays that doesn't have these issues.

all my other consoles the controllers have broken long before the console did
