You're missing a pop music scene that was slightly less irritating at the time of release, not slightly more.now.
The production values for the song were competent but everything else about it was either incredibly amateurish or just straight up bad which creates this weird uncanny valley feeling. The fact that it was basically some richgays' birthday gift for their thirteen-year-old daughter worsened it, especially when it was learned that the actual song was written by a forty-something year old man.
Most pop songs are bad, but they usually try to obfuscate their badness in some way.
