I think it's just a common thing to do with the guilt of making a female character who exists in a man's game. No matter what they say, MJ simply would not exist without Peter Parker. She is not her own character. So they have to make these flimsy displays of her being mean or disagreeable or whatever, in an attempt to remedy this and pretend she has power and agency. But no matter what, a fictional side character will always be nothing more than a doll, an object idealized in some way.
