anon, 90% of the work that goes into making a game goes into the engine and assets. Two things that gamefreak, barring a couple moments like the switch to 3d, have always fricking had.
There's a reason Call of Duty still manages to release 'good' games that run well despite operating on a similarly short schedule. Like gamefreak, they've already done the bulk of the work when making past titles, and now they're just adding shit and changing scenery.
Not to mention gamefreak doesn't even make all their assets in-house. The 3d models were almost entirely outsourced to a 3rd party. They have no excuse.
This , and make the codes for games they no longer sell open source. They need to also either do something with 3D that can't be done in 2D, or go back to making 2D games and go big on the visuals.

Not entirely true. The old pokemon anime was gradually dying to the point practically nobody watched it anymore, and the movies had so few people watching them that they eventually decided to axe their production entirely.
