I liked 3 to some extent, but the excessive number of gear slots, the bewildering growth of stat numbers to the millions really threw me off.
I like Diablo 1 best for its simplicity and atmosphere.
Worst to Best: Immortal -> D4 -> D3 -> D1 -> D2.
Haven't even played mobile slop, 4, so half of them. Just the D2 and D1 quite a bit, and from my childhood memories, 2 used to be better than 1.
I prefer the slower pacing and atmosphere. It's easy to get mobbed, especially in caves, so you have to pull carefully and strategically backtrack without advancing into unknown tiles to funnel the enemies. The whole point of it is more rogue-lite and you're vulnerable to ambushes around corners. That plus the soundtrack makes it kino dungeon-crawling to a T.

Just spend a couple trips walking between the catacombs shortcut and Adria to shop for a Plentiful Staff of Chain Lightning/Fireballs and you most definitely have the easiest time of all classes. The only speed bump for the Sorc in D1 are the rare double immune Succubi and Advocates (rare), in which case you swap to Stone Curse and smack with your staff.
If there's one inspiration from Diablo 1 that I could implement into 2 or 3 (4 can't be saved), it would have to be the inability to see around corners and straight through walls. Having x-ray vision all the time is immersion breaking, and limit the vision radius based on light so that your mouse cannot highlight something in complete darkness.

No it didn't, everyone is an omnipotent god in d2 at high levels and gear, the sorceress is not more busted than any of the rest of them. In d1 the sorc IS more busted than warrior or rogue by magnitudes, in a game where the other classes have to clear screens one monster at a time he clears screens in one go. He can afford to invest all of his points into one stat which serves as his offense and his defense at the same time because mana shield never expires unlike d2.
Sorry that you're bad, but d1s balancing is perfectly fine and the classes are all distinct in power because of it instead of being basically the same across the board

The biggest problem with D4 is still the fact that everything you do before reaching endgame is pointless. So every season it's just a race to get to level 90+ and start farming the specific zones/bosses that drop ~925 gear. Also the fact that you have to have to play a leveling/mid tier spec while farming for gear and aspects makes it even more annoying.

Viarety doesn't mean fun or engaging. Every build plays exactly the same and there's no reason to divert from your preferred flavor. The game actively discourages you from making more than one character as well since you can't farm any gear for other classes without playing the other classes. So you have to completely restart and level and gear up again from scratch if you wanted to make a different character, rather than finding pieces with one character to spur you on to make a new one.
D4 will never be good without a complete mechanics and itemization overhaul. At best its slightly better D3

I actually really enjoyed the runewords in diablo 2 more than any other loot system I've played in a game. Every other loot system just relies on completely random drops to upgrade shit. Runes are something you can actually work towards to make your BiS items. Sure they could've been balanced better but the actual system of runewords is great
The only people who shit on runewords are the idiots that think runewords are 100% BiS items that completely overtook pre-LoD itemization.
There are certainly some very high powered runewords in D2, most of those are using high runes that require a healthy trading market to ever reasonably aquire though. Spirit is probably the most egregious example of an overpowered runeword that's actually overpowered, but that's largely because shields were pretty garbage and rarely had good stats. If there was a good unique that competes with spirit, people wouldn't complain so much.
The reality is, runewords fix the gap between rarest and uniques, allowing smoother progression through the game and easing your transition into farming endgame
One of the D2 mods fixes that. I think it was path of Diablo IIRC. It made the lidless wall roll 1-2 + skills among other changes.
Blizzard is just too moronic to actually make items in the game useful. Instead they added more runewords which were either trash or BiS because it's easier to just create new OP items than tweak old ones.

Depending on how you define stat stick, no game can get away from it.
D3 and d4 are stat stick games, where all that matters is your gear has more power than what you were wearing. Every piece has incremental increases overall and you don't notice any real power gain because you're only equipping a 2-3% power boost.
D2 on the other hand has breakpoints which will drastically affect your characters play. Getting that next FCR breakpoint is huge and actually makes your character feel stronger. A sorc going from 63% to 105% FCR is a major deal for both survivability and smoothness of play.
The same isn't true in other games since every % of cast rate you get would apply you never notice the change, and because there's no breakpoint more fcr is better and limits your overall gear choices. Once you hit 105 on a sorc you're free to find other stats since 106+ is pointless (unless you're pushing for 200, but 200 is a meme anyways)
The limitations of D2 provide more variety, not less, and people don't understand that at all

Once you hit 105 on a sorc you're free to find other stats since 106+ is pointless (unless you're pushing for 200, but 200 is a meme anyways)
