It had an interesting premise in it's alpha as a distubia video game. Unfortunately, the game got worse as development dragged on and the devs lost sight of the initial vision. They also lied about their "groundbreaking" neural AI so yeah.

I checked the original pilot once, apparently they could not used anything from the original "hidden lore" of the game because it is full of satanic edgy pseudo surrealist "open to interpretation" nonsense, so the plot is just about a bunch of kids who keep invading their neighbor's house over and over again for no reason at all and making jokes about how moronic the game mechanics are like "isn't it weeeeird how the neighborhood just stops chasing us when we cross the street? Knowing the trail of corpses companies like EA, Activision and UbiSoft leave behind, I simply don't get why small time devs keep making contracts with them just to inevitably getting screwed over by them.
I remember EA terrorising TF2 youtube content with copyright strikes, because they thought developing the Playstation version of the game gives them the power to do so or something.
But then again, the tried to frick with Disney and thought they could get away with it as usual. Hubris.

A lot of smaller companies enter a sort of quasi-mortgage loans with various banks that treat them as an investment which often results in whoever is at the head of the company to have to have daily meetings with their "investors" etc. Especially in studios that start small, this head often is a programmer, artist etc. and talking to suits all day isn't his life's dream. Being part of a corporation like EA may still involve talking to suits, but a lot less. All the day to day hurdles of having to run the business go away they can focus on managing their team and having some development related function.

As a middle manager in a massive financial company I would love to do that. I'm not very good at programming at all, but can talk for hours about accounting risks and financials. But my current job has me doing that for insurance companies. I'd give a lot just to do the same type of shit for a video game studio.

Be the change you want to see. Go find some small but highly promising indie Dev that's looking to take the next step and offer your services. Or even just leave them your details and say "if you ever need a guy who can deal with suits call me" or whatever. Do it to several companies until you get hired.

The one thing is though I can almost guarantee you make 10x more in your current job than you would working for a small independent game studio.

                >Being part of a corporation like EA may still involve talking to suits, but a lot less. All the day to day hurdles of having to run the business go away they can focus on managing their team and having some development related function.
So how does a company like EA always inevitably get its claws in and force these companies to start making games they're ill-suited for? At what point does the worm turn?

Big publishers start off allowing mostly free reign to the devs, and make all kinds of huge promises like "we'll guarantee your control of the games you make" and "we'll allow you to express your artistic vision" or whatever the frick, but then they slowly start adding in small demands about content or especially marketing. Then it will turn into bigger things like including a season pass or always online or whatever. The final step is the publisher replacing the top people with their own Yes Men suits to run shit and they will force whatever the marketing research and investment people want down the devs throats. All of this is done under threat of legal action and loss of funding if the devs don't comply.

                Extra detail
Often times, these deals will entail the covering of operational costs, which means a studio may expand beyond their ability to actually pay for themselves to be independent off of a success, which they use to do the seemingly smart thing of investing in themselves, without seeing the added operating costs of doing so. Breaking away means having to deal with these costs all at once.
Something like, inheriting a mansion and being bankrupted by the property tax, because you don't make the money associated with a mansion usually.

There's definitely ways to dodge it if you're savvy about it. One of the more interesting examples along this line is Fromsoft when Sony stepped in to back Bloodborne, to give them something pretty to launch with. Fromsoft used the support to create tons upon tons of assets that would end up inevitably cut from Bloodborne, and used these assets extensively for the creation of DS3, Sekiro, and Elden Ring. While this wasn't as predatory as a lot of these deals are to start with, Sony really just needed something exclusive to push console sales, it's still an example of how to avoid this proverbial turning worm. Invest in things you don't have to pay to keep, not things you'll have to pay for later.

It's also extremely telling that the majority of positive reviews are from before the NGS launch, and the new reviews all say to ignore the NGS content and play PSO2 Classic instead.

I honestly don't know what the frick they're trying to do with that game. Everything new they do with it seems specifically designed to run contrary to something they did last month and/or render it invalid and useless in the future.
It's like they got advice from another company to "make a treadmill", and then made the treadmill's path curve and twist all over the place like an escher drawing. I played NGS from start to last october before finally getting out, and it's honestly the fricking stupidestly-designed online game I've ever played. And that includes generic as frick korean MMOs from the early 2000s.

It's 100% over for deus ex, articles started going up around the end of last month
All because EG's business plan was to purchase a bunch of studios and IPs with money they didn't even have yet and they were banking on the $2bn deal with Saudis and EG also lost over $100mil on the Saints Row flop because only the development costs are counted for that $100mil and not marketing/advertising which always gets a big budget too

It's interesting how RWS's writing changed through each game. Postal 2 had low brow humor but it never felt like it was trying too much. Usually the silliest jokes (poop jokes) were environmental gags. You never had the characters talking about poop. Sure it's referential humor is outdated but it's still charming in a way.

Then for Postal 3 they felt like they were the kings of comedy, amped everything up to 11 and ended up with writing that's extremely cringe inducing, on top of being in a bad game.

Then for Paradise Lost they actually recaptured Postal 2's humor and tone.

And then for Postal 4 they once again tried too hard and became extremely cringe.

Weird how they got Paradise Lost right in between cringe games.

You see their social media and you can tell why their current writing is as bad as it is. (Hint: I blame Mike J).

RWS worked on the writing and creative direction and some russians developed the actual game. RWS are 100% responsible for the shit writing.

        Anonymous

they like to push that because it makes it seem as if they weren’t involved at all, but the reality is that all of the writing, casting, and directing was handled by RWS. so yeah, they might not be responsible for the gameplay being complete shit, but they were a lot more involved than they like to let on.

2 compared to 4 is a great example of why less is more.
the absurdity of 2 is created by the player doing dumb shit with what the game provides, not the game itself. What's mandated by the game is limited to one bit of absurdity per mission, and even then you can bypass it by just being normal.
Being able to just buy the milk makes it funny that you'd go on a killing spree to save $20
Al Qaeda casually hanging out in the sewers, where you find them solely through exploration, is funnier than being railroaded into a fight.
Having a normal level while being aware you're dressed as a gimp is funny, but the Dude's sole reaction being
      >shit, I need to change clothes
      is what elevates it further.

        Anonymous

it also helps that Postal 2 understands that it's an FPS, so most of the game revolves around shooting people in different contexts. Postal 4 tried to diversify, so most tasks are based around gimmicks that get old really quick. Not to mention that when there is actual shooting it's also shit because of the horrible level design.

This is why Dead Rising steadily got worse too. One was genius because they played the story and characters straight and left it to the player to discover all the crazy shit you can do in the gameplay. Everyone loved the crazy shit and the new leaf devs thought they were supposed to shove it at the player.

Bro, battleborn was one of the ugliest, jankiest games made in that timeframe. Comparing it to MNC is like comparing Mozart to a white middleschool rap battle. Battleborns visuals weren't unique, they were trash. Maybe in the concept phase there was something not eyebleedingly bad but beyond maybe oscar mike, the most generic of all characters, everyone in that game was like a hot sauce enema for the eyes. Thank god battleborn is dead and buried.

At the time of it's release, Gearbox was still having lots of popularity with Borderlands 2 and everyone had eyes for Borderlands 3 and then Gearbox tease a new game which gets everyone hyped but then it's Battleborn and it killed interest completely

battleborne would've had a chance if anyone but randy was at the top. they could've made it a nice f2p alternative but randy had to be a homosexual and label it as "free trial" even tho it was the full pvp game and you could"ve bought the campaign.

I played both at release. Battleborn was actually the better game. But at least its failure started the true downfall of Randy. Worth it i guess.

      >BG3/Larian with the constant swarm of "oh noooo why u straight white man frick all of you bigotssss!!1!" I'm also convinced a lot of TikTok videos about dates going awry due to playing too much BG3 were made via their marketing department since a lot were really artificial-feeling

I legitimately hope that whoever came up with that marketing strategy attempts seppuku but they have DNR papers, but misplaced them so the whole time they keep getting revived while suffering intense pain, begging and screaming for them to stop being brought back until finally they're made completely stable, and spend the next year recovering at the hospital.

From what I've seen of Postal 4 they've regressed from being actually edgy to just "blood and veganas" edgy, which is edgy for a ten-year-old.

The fact is they needed to amp up the offensiveness if they wanted to carve out a niche in the 2020's, but they were too old and too worried about their livelihood to push the envelope. They didn't, so this is just a cash grab and Civvie 11 cross-promotional stunt.

Ganker posts stuff daily that is far edgier than anything RWS could pump out so either up the ante or fold.

THQ proper died in 2012, by that point it was Nordic using the name since they had thoroughly burned their reputation as Nordic by then.

Is THQ the one that got fricked when the Saudis pulled out of a money deal?

That's Nordic's parent company Embracer. They're the ones who have been killing off companies and projects left and right to try shaving 2 billion dollars worth of yearly spending to keep investors from liquidating their shit for them. That's why the Tomb Raider remakes are being pumped out and why 3D Realms has been spewing so much half baked shit out recently - they overbought companies and need money yesterday.

              >Frick. How the hell did they get into that mess?
They're Swedish and were getting a lot of government money to stay afloat. They have more than games too, they sit on a bunch of European real estate stuff, but when interest rates went up a while ago that stopped being enough to pay for all the acquisitions they had been making and the government money slowed while at the same time their hands off approach to their new studios meant nothing was prepped for launch except Biomutant. It didn't help that the CEO has a habit of being too honest during earnings reports; every time a deal fell through or something was going overbudget he'd say it without mincing words and the stock would tumble.
              >There are remakes?
1, 2 and 3 are getting an HD remake collection like next week yeah
              >I thought devolver owned 3d realms? Also what half baked shit?
I have a vague memory of Devolver putting in a bid for 3D Realms at one point but they're owned by Embracer now. Graven was clearly not ready for full release and Phantom Fury seems to be getting kicked out of the door pretty soon despite not seeming to be ready at all.

Gov money always builds up too much confidence. So Embracer was a real estate company that got into gaming and now since their government money is gone they are FRICKED/in debt? And they were shit at managing game projects?

THQ proper died in 2012, by that point it was Nordic using the name since they had thoroughly burned their reputation as Nordic by then.

                [...]

I may have limited info but weren't Embracer basically buying up every studio possible with the intent of fluffing up their value in anticipation of the Saudi Arabian government making a big sale or investment into the company? Then that whole thing fell apart so they basically have an unsustainably huge company that's just going to bleed massive amounts of money?

                >So Embracer was a real estate company?

Oh frick, forgot about that. Now THAT was a shitshow, I still can't believe how many reviewers swore up and down on a secret pact to deflect 100% of criticism as being about the hair.
I HATE it when people do that hivemind thing in media, it makes me wonder who would have the power to influence that many reviewers and why. Why is it THAT important to prop DmC up that much?
Same kind of thing happened with a lot of recent Disney flops, and with COV*D, freaks me out man.
The opposite kind of thing happened with Baldur's Gate 3, where it came out and literally every AAA dev suddenly shook in their boots openly, even the companies that usually maintain the faceless corporate entity visage.

      >Hello Neighbor in general, between all the streamerbait shit and the sheer amount of absolute MONEY the company put into trying to make it a "franchise", including the one and only time I ever went to PAX, where about 10% of the entire convention hall was dedicated to a floor-to-ceiling, walled-in display for one of their games
      >BG3/Larian with the constant swarm of "oh noooo why u straight white man frick all of you bigotssss!!1!" I'm also convinced a lot of TikTok videos about dates going awry due to playing too much BG3 were made via their marketing department since a lot were really artificial-feeling
      >Starfield constantly throwing around awards they've won, and "players" that maybe-bought it, and pretending everything is okay despite the game being a total travesty by everyone with an IQ above 10
      >Saint's Row in general. It started a bit after 3 came out, but it was okay until the reboot. Hoo boy that marketing. That damn reboot's marketing and PR was so awful that I'm entirely convinced that an entire marketing board unanimously agreed that the marketing was good and approved it and that it wasn't just one guy on Twitter
      >Blizzard slowly making all their heroes LGBTQIA and talking about diversity and whatever while simultaneously having slimeball higher-ups, and keeping them straight in China anyway

This. Holy frick, those ads turned my usual "I wonder if WoW is good yet" thoughts into a total void.

      >Volition sees this guy and straight-up hires him to work on a total remaster of SR2, gives him a team and everything (dunno if he actually RAN the team, but whatever)
      >remaster will either be a complete remaster from scratch, or just SR2 ported to a newer engine
      >fans love everything, can't wait, hype growing
      >guy works on it literally until he dies, after which there's no evidence anyone's working on the remaster
      >lots of radio silence and half-hearted "we're still working on it" shit, while Embracer Group buys the company
      >still more radio silence after that, no evidence they're working on it
      >reboot comes out and it's so bad the entire company collapses like a house of cards made of sand
      >company gone, SR franchise is likely 100% dead for good
      >still no info on the SR2 remaster
      >very likely that after IdolNinja died, they tossed his code out and moved his team to work on the SR reboot

          >Why did that happen again? I didn't really pay attention to BG3.
Dunno, as soon as BG3 became an open beta on Steam and started getting a ton of sales, literally 100% of all AAA and AA game devs came out of nowhere and made posts about how it's "not fair" that BG3 is "so good" and that they can't compete, that it's unrealistic for AAA/AA devs to be able to make a game that good.
I don't even know what it was that had them scared, BG3's only unique factors over Divinity OS 1/2 was that the game has more "oops, you killed [NPC 5], let's replace them with [NPC 5a] and tweak two lines to acknowledge you killed them" moments, more voice acting, and a shitload more options for LGBTQIAA2P during sex.

The weirdest part that makes it the most sus is that quite a few of the AA/AAA devs throwing jealous babyfits about the game were devs that normally take the "faceless corporate entity" route and say nothing bad about anything. It's like if suddenly those British Royal Guard guys with the zero emotions suddenly reacted to a Youtuber that ran up and said BOO, and one pisses himself, the other screams, followed by both running away.

bg3 is no more expensive than the average tripleA game, nor did it take that much longer to release. it had a very long early access pjase but that was it.
it was 100% the industry being afraid people may start demanding good games and not busywork threadmills

The long early access meaning they developed the game more publicly than usual is not the reason the game is absurdly detailed on a level other AAAs are not even approaching, otherwise every early access game would be great. It's all excuses.

this did not happen, what happened was an indie dev (guy who worked on shit like hypnospace outlaw and other games like that) said something to the effect of 'please dont expect bg3 levels of polish and shit from other cprgs, especially the small studios because no one makes them to begin with and then gave reasons why like larian having several similar games under their belts with cash flow and feedback from the EA period, and a couple of AAA devs agreed and brought up examples of other big CRPGs that were only possible because of a bunch of factors leading up to that game and werent just shat out by small studios.
Basically, its someone saying why you cant use rockstar's games as a model for small studios and going "why dont they just make their game as good as RDR2? are they dumb or something?"
then afterwards, because people on the internet are mentally moronic, an article was written about how "AAA devs are shaking in their boots and are mad at gamers for expecting more from all AAA games" which isnt what happened but thats the story it became

        >Why is it THAT important to prop DmC up that much?
What amazes me so much about this is that even so much later you still occasional have gaming journalists dig that game and its "controversial reception" up to write articles about how the mean gamers were unfair to it. I don't know any other game that gets this treatment, like they set themselves reminders for every 2-3 years in the feature to still defend that game. Maybe it's their nostalgia, because it was one the first games I remember that made it's their entire marketing shitting on the popular franchise and its fans despite only existing because of them, which is now the norm.
Funny thing for me was like 5 years ago or something I actually almost fell for it, and thought that maybe I was too harsh on the game because I like DMC3/4 a lot and so I tried to give DmC the benefit of the doubt in so far that I watched someone else play it again and my reaction to the entire game was

Zoe Quinn, who fricked the kotaku journalist gamergate should have been about if gamergate weren't moronic, didn't work on night in the woods but the NitW sound guy was dumb enough to date her and she did a somewhat vague #metoo about him and he had been ostracized by everyone he knew and an heroed within 3 days.

Unless almost the same thing happened twice it sounds like you are remembering completely wrong the details of Alec Holowka's suicide.
He was the director/creator of the game, pretty much the face of it to the public.
Zoe Quinn had nothing to do with the game, but is a "big name" in the industry
They fricked and then she(?) said he raped her
He killed himself over it, and then his family and company essentially pissed on his grave by siding with Zoe Quinn.

Oh, well yeah okay I guess I forgot she had nothing to do with the game then. It's been a hot minute but that's about it. Still fricked up.

He probably killed himself because he may have actually did it. I got falsely #metoo'd and I didn't kms. Maybe wanted to at first, but when you didn't do anything wrong, nothing to feel bad about.

maybe but it depends on the consequences of getting metoo'd. getting shitslung at you for a few weeks sucks sure, but if you lose everything i could see why someone would take their own life even if they didn't do. even if they proved they didn't do shit what would you even have left.

Dragon Age: Origins also had some atrociously lame marketing where they tried to make the game seem COOL and VIOLENT and ADULT and EXTREME because it was an isometric RPG throwback to the Infinity Engine games so they had to compensate by showing trailers cut to Marilyn Manson's This is the New Shit showing action cutscenes with blood splatter everywhere including the title logo.

What? That sounds fricked up. QRD?

Zoe Quinn never claimed she was raped or even physically abused. She accused the guy of being too clingy of a boyfriend, all the way back in 2012

And that resulted in a bunch of backlash, the company fired him, and he killed himself 3 days later.

I still remember his FB post about his mental health issues. Zoe fully expected him to kill himself, it wasn't an accident, she had given a TED talk and wrote a book about how online harassment nearly drove her to suicide

RWS has become so gay. They stealth-remove features from all of their games that make the violence too visceral, they virtue-signal on Twitter shaming fans who liked the edgy humor of Postal 2 and being snarky towards them for liking an old game more than a new one. The more they try to act down-to-Earth, the more apparent it is how Reddit they are.

I don't know why this one reeks when they might have done it for any of their other recent Battlefield games too or another military shooter. Maybe it's that WW1 was a real conflict and a particularly horrible one. It would be cringy posting that for any military game but for a WW1 or WW2 game it's really braindead, it's not a "cool" conflict to be flippant about.

        Anonymous

It's worse because the game tries to virtue signal about muh war is bad and that everyone is human. All that shit is immediately ignored in the campaign and MP. The Germans are inhuman bad guys and there's melodramatic music/speeches to show how epic and badass you are.

        Anonymous

It's probably because even in simplified pop culture, WW1 is recognized as a shitty, grey conflict between messy alliances that was more or less a ton of people being killed in stalemate battles for no reason for four years, whereas pop culture has a more clear and easy "good guys vs bad guys" conflict in WW2. So trivializing it with a cornball how do you do fellow kids tweet is a bad look.

WW1 was all the world's empires destroying themselves over nothing and the vast majority of the next 100 years of human events are the consequence of the sudden collapse and destruction of those former unimaginably powerful empires.

Make a good game that's able to stand on it's own with an interesting enough premise that you can use as your sole marketing campaign. You would only have to showcase trailers and gameplay footage then and it will be enough to get other people to market that shit to you via various other stuff like rage bait marketing or infighting or whatnot like it happened with Hogwarts Legacy.
