That playing the PSX versions of the first three SMT games pretty much makes the snes versions unplayable. Really, dungeoncrawling in PSX is so smooth and quick. Besides, SMT2 could use a retranslation.
Also, there's an OST replacement mod for P1. I do agree that Megami Ibunroku Persona is pretty underrated and has better gameplay than P2, lol.

          >Last I heard the fan translation was cancelled.
You're probably talking about Iwakura's, who cancelled their translation exactly because a different group beat them to the punch and shadow dropped their own translation of the game.
Iwakura wrote a blogpost about this and everything.
          >As you hopefully know by this point, another team released an official patch for Persona 2: Eternal Punishment’s PSP version yesterday, fully translating the game, all its menus, and the Tatsuya scenario into English.
          >Myself and the others working on our version were completely blindsided by this, and had no idea it was in the works until it came out, same as everyone else. There was initially a great deal of panic, confusion, and disappointment, especially since one of the team had formerly been helping us out with coding and graphic modifications on our project.
          >That said, our team was still left demoralized by this sudden announcement, and it’s been decided that without the need or momentum to continue our version, we’ve decided to cancel our in-progress build.

              It applies to both projects.
Sayucchin did the same thing Iwakura planned to do, with subjective differences, as Iwakura themself said in the blogpost.
              >The new patch is just modifications to the original Atlus PS1 translation, similarly to what our project had planned, the only key differences being that the graphic formatting and fonts are different, and this version uses honorifics(which I tend to localize or make variations on).

                >you're far too stupid to understand the underlying principles behind how porting a game works
Literally no one talked about porting a game here besides (You).
This is about editing sprites and editing text strings, and potentially editing the text printing functions of code to handle changes to the font, a bigger amount of characters per line and such.

These tasks don't ever take +6 years unless you're ridiculously incompetent and solely depend on people who actually know how to do them because you don't.
That's exactly the case with Iwakura btw.

iwakura is an editor, he was working with another guy who was actually modifying the game's code to work with his english script

The project stall happened when they were already 5+ years into translating the game. There's no reason it should have taken that long in the first place. Iwakura's team is just moronicly slow, they've been working on Fate Extra/CCC for like 7 years now for example.

Someone is doing a true PS1 music restoration patch for PSP that has all 100 something tracks, unlike the existing mod which only has 50 tracks because it simply overwrote the PSP tracks.
All that would be needed after that is a PS1 difficulty restoration patch for PSP and we'll finally have the definitive version of P1.

I guess you'd still have different looking menus and a totally different overworld map, but the trade-off is worth it for the much faster paced gameplay in PSP.

        >P1 PSP is perfectly fine outside of that
Difficulty is kind of an issue.
Even on expert mode the game is baby-easy tier because of how nerfed all the enemies are in PSP. One of the earliest personas you can fuse has Mabufula, and that spell will do enough damage to instantly kill every encounter for half of the entire game, except for the enemies that block magic attacks, obviously.
When you start getting shit with Megido around Lv.20, its over, you won the whole game at that point.

moron here in terms of content which are the best versions of smt1/2/if

      Anonymous

I would assume PS1 versions would be best, especially for If.. since they added new music to that version. The GBA version of SMT1 has some more optional lore about the world you can get, and the world map's been slightly redesigned to look a little more like an actual city. Both the PS1 and GBA version of SMT1 have the meter at the bottom of the screen that do a good job of showing you when you'll probably get a random encounter, which is a really cool feature. I'd assume most of these ports are mostly the same between releases content wise.

      Yes but not really.
The English version is hot trash.
It's missing an entire story path (because the monkeys that localized it literally broke parts of its code and had no choice but to make it inaccesible), and it's also censored to shit.
Character sprites were modified with forced diversity in mind and many references and names were changed to New York standards and stupid shit like that.
