Was really fun as a kid to play with friends. Don't see myself playing it ever again. Partly because nobody wants to play that and partly because it's just not good by nowadays standards in my opinion

I played the shit out of it when it was new. It’s still fun with GE1964 kmb/modernized controls. I presume the XBLA version is the best in terms of playability but I haven’t tried it yet.

One of the best single player campaigns ever made. The fact that it barely gets talked about on Ganker and that most anons here think it aged like crap makes me seriously doubt this board’s taste in games.

PSA: Everyone should download the Goldfinger mod for Goldeneye. It’s one of the best total conversion mods ever made.

It sucks on actual hardware. Tomorrow Never Dies 64 is a lot better.

Who the hell is playing GoldenEye on actual hardware in 2023? Sub 15fps, game slows to a crawl whenever there’s an explosion or smoke nearby etc…

You know it’s funny back then people just expected slowdown in games and no one really gave a shit.

The slowdown in Goldeneye whenever smoke or an explosion appears was genuinely awful though, even back then. Much worse than just a slight frame rate dip. I could never play Goldeneye again on actual hardware, and this is coming from someone who beat the game on 00 Agent on an actual console.

Fun for it's time, but Perfect Dark was better in nearly every way except for a few of the levels in Goldeneye coming off as surreal nightmares due to hardware limitations. Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day multiplayer sessions on the weekend were kino N64 experience.

What GE levels are surreal nightmares?

A lot of the ones where you play outside felt almost Silent Hill like. They try to capture the look of the film, and it's jarring and unsettling with the weird faces. The Jungle one stands out.

I thought Perfect Dark’s campaign was kinda bland and sterile compared to GoldenEye’s. The multiplayer is a massive improvement though.

Overall, yeah, a little. Some levels, like Chicago rain one just oozed Cyberpunk soul that the rest of the game didn't. That spaceship one where you're crawling through tunnels though was bad.

the story and aesthetic was cool in some areas, but i feel like the levels in PD had a lot less individual identity even though they were usually more detailed and had cutscenes and voice acting. or maybe it was that most of the levels in the 2nd half of the game were just annoying, like who would ever want to replay Crash Site, Attack Ship or Deep Sea. at least the nightmare levels in goldeneye like Control and Silo had cool music

Perfect Dark was Goldeneye but improved in every way. You could even unlock all the weapons from Goldeneye. Rare really did their best to make PD the best game it could have been.

It set a standard for FPS games in a sea of terrible to mediocre FPS games. It was also a product of its time and I do not think it has aged well.

Was it a good game for its time? Sure. Does it deserve the legacy? Sure. Has it aged well? Not really.

Even after saying all that, it's still a fun game.

    it aged like dogshit tbh
tried playing with some buds when it got re-released to switch and the controls are ass, the environments are tiny and cumbersome to navigate
    it's just awful
THIS is a game that needs a remaster/remake, not things that came out 3 years ago like the industry is currently doing

Good back then, still good now. The remasters fix the framerate issues and they're actually playable. Xbox version is superior though.

      >The remasters fix the framerate issues

No, they don’t. The recent Xbox release has quite a jittery frame rate for some baffling reason. Emulation with 1964 is by far the smoothest way to play Goldeneye.

really boring, janky, super slow due to the lag, enemies look moronic, weapon variety is neat, controls are bad.
Multiplayer was just about the only redeeming factor as far as I remember from my childhood.

As a Child I was obsessed with it for a year. As an adult I was playing the mouse injection port 1964 and it's pretty barebones but in a "Doom" sort of way. It's still fun, but the multiplayer are where most of my positive memories come from.
