What is your opinion on giving the player intentionally overpowered character(s) through most of the game? Good? Bad?

I don't mind as long as the character is cool.
Also, Gilliam's usefulness falls off the more OG games are released, he was at his peak in the OGs version of OG1 and never reached it again. As cool as the Gespenst RV is, it can't keep up with shit like G-Compatikaiser.

I think it depends on the execution and I don't truly understand what the point of this question is.

    Citan isn't particularly overpowered though.

He has kinda busted stats though iirc. At least he's a strong attacker and fast as shit in comparison to everyone else

The simple fact that he the fastest character in the entire game by a massive margin already makes him broken, to that you have to add that due to his speed he's on par, if not better than other party members at pushing damage, his techs are basically the same exact techs as Fei that cover all elements AND he has a party wide heal, AND he's available for 90% of the game.
He's the best party member bar none, not like it matters much admittedly since Xenogears is barely even a game.

Which is why Ether Doublers are only available for a limited period and why she is permanently removed from the party.

Elly is better in Gear fights, Citan is better on foot.

Most RPGs have garbage combat systems so an overpowered character doesn't really do any harm and is usually an improvement.

You get him early and the only better variant of him is Pesmerga or Georg, which you get very late.
Granted, you get Luc a little later and he's much stronger. But I think the point was getting a really strong party member very early that does a lot of the heavy lifting.

The most broken character in Suikoden 1 is (you), then you had Cleo, Flik and Valeria next, all given by the plot and better for the pic.
On two the best characters you get for free advancing the plot are still the (you), Rina and Sheena.

Cleo is overpowered? She's an okay, but there are far better ones. Hell, even hybrids like Flik are better. Viktor is also pretty cool but his main strength is that you get him early. There are better characters out there.

Clive fits more in the op category and you don't have to do much to get him either.

You are pretty advanced with the game before having him, the only characters that can compete for "broken character given too soon" with Viktor are Rina and Flik.

Rina is suiko 2 and not 1 and there are far more broken characters in 2.

            >Cleo is overpowered?
A lot, she has three second best tier stats and three average ones, the only other plot given character that has as much is Flik (MC has five, def is only average).
Cleo has better magic stat than Flik while Flik has strength, in Suikoden 1 magic was better than in the rest. So I say she's the best plot character outside MC, specially when she's there since the tutorial dungeon.
You also can get other three in that "stat tier" (and Ted): last smith, Sheena, and the edgy elf with bad luck, so he's the worst in this list.
Nobody else has higher totals than these, including the characters with one crazy good stat.
That being said, because of how stat ups work, your level-1 is the number variance, so you could have rolled a pretty shitty Cleo.

Killey with the right runes is much more overpowered.

Mages in Suikoden 1 and 2 are all more stronger/useful unless you're spending a lot of time grinding for stuff.

Suikoden never pretended to have a balanced roster of characters. I mean, there's 70-ish playable ones in every game. if you want to you can have a totally OP team or team made of underdogs. What subsequent games implemented was idea of Convoy so you chuck story-mandated characters back there and actually roll with your chosen team.

    >Anons arguing about the most overpowered character in Suikoden
    >Everyone ignoring the character that comes with a free multi-targeting attack, strongest magic rune and hero-like stats
I guess he doesn't count because of the role he plays in the game?

Jowy is an honorary MC, and all MCs are OP as frick in Suikoden games.

      >dat feel when you team up again

Going by that logic Tir in Suikoden 2 is OP as frick.

But it's more about getting someone OP early that stays with you.

I think that can work well so long as they don't shit on enemies all on their own, but form more of a solid pillar in your party to allow players to experiment or not have an optimal party, since they'll at least have the really strong one.
