A series that showcases Nomura's strengths (character designs and character interactions/moments) and weaknesses (feeling a need to explain everything leading to abundant retcons and convoluted storytelling, the inability to let a story just sit on its own), and I think they're overall pretty good games. Some are stinkers on the gameplay side, some are shit on the story/characters side, but I don't think any single KH game isn't at least worth a look at in some regard. 3D is the one I'd rank the lowest, though.

      Anonymous

I get that 2 had a great ending for Sora, Riku, and Kairi, but I don't get the idea of saying "It should've ended with 2."

You can't simultaneously say that Nobodies aren't "real" and thereby don't deserve to have their own lives while also having Sora be friends with fictional characters in a book or a computer program. Also, the plot of KH2 is choppy in a lot of places and doesn't hold up to scrutiny. The beginning and the major action moments in the middle and end of the game are nice, but everything between those three parts is pretty bad.

I liked KH1, got filtered by CoM, and really liked KH2. Haven't played the others.

I watched a ton of disney movies as a child so being an adult now it's kinda nice to revisit those worlds and reminds me of all the characters that I grew up with and enjoyed. Playing these games, for a fleeting moment, makes me remember how nice that part of my childhood was. Plus the art that came out of the series is great.

At first the Disney crossover felt like nice and blended with the story in general but as the games passed and the series started to build its own Identity the Disney shit has started to feel more lkie a hinderance than a jojyful addition.

And with the past enterviews I have no faith whatsoever on KHIV it will be a worse KHIII, and I hate they have to leave extremely important plot points into mobage kusoge.

        Kingdom hearts can Survive with:

        the trio
        Chip'n Dale
        Yen Sid
        Maleficent & Pete
        1 or 2 other characters

Started the series with CoM GBA (had no PS2), obviously I had problems with the plot but by the end it was just cool to watch Axel and Marluxia do shit. Riku's scenario was just overall short but fun.
Once I got PS2, I played KH1 and KH2. KH1 is by far my favourite title in the series, I love almost everything about it and you can consider it as a standalone title if you just want to experience Squaresoft's JRPG in Disney worlds. Right after 100% KH1 I jumped into KH2, and man, Roxas' prologue was great... but then the main game with Sora starts, and it sucked (Mulan being the very first Disney world to visit is probably the poorest choice in entire series). Being vanilla KH2 and not FM, combat felt different and yet much easier (I think I only died in Pride Lands against ironball dinosaurs and in Beast's Castle against Xaldin, that's it for the whole game), and plot kinda went the shounen way instead of Disney movie-like. Also frick minigame galore in KH2. FM fixed many gameplay aspects for both KH1 and KH2, but KH2 got much bigger of an upgrade (probably because KH1 already had a lot in EN vanilla release).
Days was ok sidegame that didn't ruin the plot with how Xion disappeared, but then KH3 killed all the good will Days had.
Starting from BBS and DDD I mostly play the series for Shimomura's music and goofing around in Disney worlds, the plot is just JoJo now (and while Araki resets the party every part, Nomura drags everyone along from game to game) and gameplay is hit-or-miss with Tokyo team being dead and Osaka team getting their shit together only after KH3 DLC. I don't feel like investing another 20 years into the series after KH3 and X/UX disappointing me so hard.
      >tl;dr
I agree with post like and

Peaked with the first game. Slow and steady decline from that point onwards.

Too bad. XehaBlack person's story is very likely not over yet. He won't be a big bad, but he'll still have a big role.

1-358 have this specific "It's the mid 2000s, you're 12 years old, and currently in a Hot Topic store" sort of feel that can't be replicated.

There's also a strong emotional weight to the early games that outshines any of the sillier plot points. And the gameplay in 1 and are 2 great, and hold up very well. 1 has strong level design that cleverly incorporates your combat skills, and 2 is an incredibly tight action game.
As for the rest, I don't really care. BBS onwards is mediocre at best, and incredibly annoying to play at worst. With plot points that trample on the emotional weight of previous games, or just don't live up to the standards set in those early titles. KH3 was the culmination of this, with its plot being a pure schizophrenic nightmare of unparsable lore that's impossible to take seriously on any level. It did at least have decent gameplay compared to BBS and DDD.

Played literally ever single title including melody of memories. Mainline titles were played multiple times on Lv1 playthroughs. I played all titles at launch and have recently (past 2 or so years) replayed them.

    >KH1 is great, only shortcoming is the combat being clunky and unbalanced
    >KH2 is unarguably the best in combat, story, and bosses
    >KH3 is actually really great, biggest shortfall was lack of difficulty and bosses at launch
    >DDD is a sleeper hit (no pun intended). Game is really good but most never had a 3DS and now people just skip it and claim they played it
    >BBS is basically KH2.5 in terms of gameplay. So it's really good. Problem is that it gets repetitive as you have to beat it 3 times to get the true ending.
    >Chain of Memories was okay for its time, but the card based gameplay is really annoying now
    >ReCoded, MoM, 365/2 days, ect. Can be skipped. Just watch the video summaries. As someone that has played them, please don't. You aren't missing out on anything.

Wasted potential. The idea was genuinely good on paper: SE was the king of RPGs at the time, and Disney has enough beloved characters to populate an entire city. Putting those two things together really wasn't a bad idea. The problem was letting the plot get so goddamn convoluted and focusing more on the kawaii bishie OCs instead of THE CHARACTERS EVERYONE ACTUALLY KNOWS AND LOVES AND CAME TO SEE. If I was in charge I would just toss it all out and start from scratch, after distracting Nomura with a 1000 yen note on a string.

We need a Kingdom Hearts game focused only on teenage drama/slice of life set on the Destiny Islands. With Sora, Kairi, Riku, Roxas, Xion and Namine.

Kinda like the first part of KH1, but just them focusing on their relationships, building boats, catching fish, sexual tension, competition between the boys, Kairi being a wienertease etc...

My favorite part of the games is just the characters actually interacting like in KH1 where Kairi was quite the vixen, the ice cream shit with Roxas and Xion and even in 3 for a moment it seemed that Sora and Kairi relationships was evolving and getting deeper until...he disappears for sequel bait reasons.

I hope that in KH4 we get to at least eat at restaurants with Sora, visit Shibuya and go shopping with Strelitzia

Firmly believe 358/2 days deserved a remake, preferably on the 3DS or Wii U something, but literally anything would have been nice. That it got relegated to an HD cutscene movie is a tragedy.
Also, DDD was a mistake. Who the frick looked at the pile of spaghetti that is the KH story and thought adding time travel was a good idea?

      Anonymous

Nomura has this weird thing where he always seems to feel the need to explain things. DDD did a lot of retroactive explaining of certain things and mechanics, and from DDD onward there's been less retconning as a result, but it's still a fricking mess of a story because it introduced not only time travel, but EXTREMELY SPECIFIC RULES for time travel, that the series then goes ahead and ignores anyway when Merlin and Sora do it. Like, there's what seems to be "time travel you can do without breaking the laws of nature" which Xehanort and some people in KHUX do, and then there's "frick it do whatever" but that gets you banished out of reality unless you're a Disney character I guess.

        Anonymous

As an addendum, I think KHUX's time travel rules it introduces (as in, going to the future) are more coherent than whatever Xehanort used, and they clearly built it around an existing instance of a character's revival (Maleficent coming back in 2) instead of just sort of hamfisting it in.

It exacerbates the shift from the initial premise of the game being a crossover between Square Enix and Disney to a licensed Disney fan fic game where OC characters exist as a decoration and FF/TWEWY characters are purged out of existence. Like, how none of them are present in the loading screens in KH3. Who would want to play this trash series where Nomura can just get rid of things he doesn't like anymore and pretend they never existed?

You replied to the wrong person, but I agree. Also it's worse than not being in loading screens in KH3. They literally weren't in KH3 until DLC

Extremely unlikely. There'd be no reason to it. It's more likely he's Demyx or just somebody else entirely. The only reason he's probably Demyx is because Demyx is apparently linked to ancient Keyblade wielders and we just have NOTHING else on his past. Luxord we at least know is linked to Yozora.

Demyx is linked to whichever Black person gives every fight background music

It became soulless when Nomura said he would remove FF characters completely from the series.

Well Yozora is Noctis, so so much for that

FF characters were mostly just a semi relevant group in 1 and 2. They never had much of a presence. I'd love to have more of them or even a couple worlds based on SE games but I don't get why people are all upset that Nomura just now doesn't care about FF characters.

        >semi-relevant
They're a core group in every single iconic area of the first couple games. Starting island? Half the island's characters are Final Fantasy. Radiant Garden? Final Fantasy. Strongest boss? Final Fantasy.
Every spell and the partial basis of most of Sora's various form changes. The leading characters in most of the most hype moments of the game (helping Sora get to the thousand heartless, the underworld coliseum, etc). It's also implied that all of Sora's childhood friends behind Riku and Kairi are Final Fantasy characters.

Aside from Donald and Goofy, Disney had less relevance than Final Fantasy in the first couple games' main plot. They just gave Mickey more screen time because Disney demands it.

all of the Kingdom Hearts original stuff is really entertaining but I don't like the Disney stuff at all

Then you should play a superior game from Disney Japan and Aniplex where Disney stuff is relegated to being a reference and the main cast are delinquents loosely based on classic Disney villains.

Can't think of any reason to care about this lame ass garbage aside from gameplay if they fix it in KH4.

Loved it as a kid, KH3 was very disappointing and I will be well nearing 40 by the time KH4 comes out, if they keep the same release schedule, so I would be too old to care.

The main numbered games are all at the very least good and enjoyable. BBS and DDD ruined the story entirely though. Not that it was ever an amazing story, but those two absolutely turned it into a mess.

BBS was great though sure it was basically star wars but it introduced backstory the series needed. DDD was complete shit and ruined everything though.

        >it introduced backstory the series needed
It really didn't. The entire series would have functioned fine without anything in BBS. They very likely didn't even have the BBS shenanigans planned out until they realized how popular the series was.

Sure if they ended at KH2 but that was never gonna happen.

They could have taken half the Final Fantasy stories about light vs dark and slotted in the Kingdom Hearts characters instead, ad infinitum with all the power scaling you can achieve via a plotline based around different worlds being canon
The story is convoluted but not particularly unique. The backstory wasn't necessarily. They could have just said KH1's beginning was all you needed to know and no one would have cared. Without it being talked about in a new game, the audience was more likely to care about how Sora's mom is doing on Destiny Island than all the shit about the previous keyblade wielders talking to the main cast

Sure but nomura is a huge star wars gay and this is what we got. Go write a cool kingdom hearts what if and see if disney picks it up.

I don't give a shit about writing a new Kingdom Hearts. I'm calling out that the backstory was needed. It wasn't at all. Everything was hamfisted.

I fricking love it. I played KH1 when I was 11-12 on PS2 and have been following this shit ever since. The amount of systems the games have been on is crazy but they have made it easier to digest over years which is good. KH2FM is still the peak but KH3 after the updates comes close. Can't wait for KH4. Kinda hate the mobile shit but whatever.

Missing Link will be a total flop and foreshadow the failure of KH4. You can't milk a bad story forever.
