I've never played a jrpg before other than Pokemon, and I'm looking to start. I've researched which jrpgs people recommend starting with, and I've narrowed down the list to these. Which to go with? I want to appreciate the genre as a whole, and not just stick to recent stuff

Chrono trigger
Fpbp, though
Lunar was the one for me. Can't go wrong either way.
SNES, DS, or Steam version?
snes
NDS, for the added content
Steam version is based off the NDS version ,but from what I've heard it needed several patches (lol) tu run normally.
SNES. If you don't want to emulate on PC, I'd recommend a hacked N3DS.
DS is the definitive version with the superior translation.
Start with either Dragon Quest V, Grandia, or Lunar: Silver Star Story if you want to know why people love JRPGs.
Putting Super Mario RPG there as an JRPG is a war crime
?????????
Literally just play Chrono Trigger and ignore everything else under the sun
dragon quest xi. on every platform, well done story, long as frick, don't need any knowledge of any previous game, classic shit top to bottom. truly can't go wrong.
Dragon Quest XI. It's the most modern game but also has some of the most timeless combat.
>Chrono Trigger
>Dragon Quest V
>Final Fantasy VI
Those are the ones I'd recommend to newcomers
Remove all Final Fantasy games from the list, the entire franchise is trash.
Start with Mario RPG or Mario & Luigi games
Or Paper Mario for N64
FF7 or FFX is probably the best place to start. P4G and DQXI are both really long and might be too much for a new fan. The other games might be too old for a newcomer to enjoy
Start with SMT 3 Nocturne, Earthbound, Xenoblade 1, Persona 3 FES or FFVI.
>nocturne
lol imagine that being your first jrpg these people gona be filtered to the high heavens
lunar is my favorite
smrpg honestly wouldnt be a bad starting place. I dont think CT or FF7 would be bad either. Do one of those 3 first. Honestly just play those 3 first. DQXI is also a pretty simple game. SMRPG is like 20 hours long tops iirc and CT is also not very long either. I say you go with SMRPG first since its short and sweet.
Suikoden 2 op trust me.
Trails in the Sky. You can play it on any potato PC
Don't
If he didn’t like RPGs then why did he produce one?
If you want to try a TRPG, give Vandal Hearts a go.
No grindan, no varied mission objectives/maps, limited (2 branches/char, duplicates) but impactful class selection.
They recently completed a translation patch fo the Saturn version that has some minor additions, but I've played the PSX version way more and would recommend that for a new player as it looks a bit nicer.
>no varied mission objectives/maps
Backspacing fricked me because I'm moronic, ignore that "no".
Lightning strikes again for the tripple.
a friend gifted me disgaea 1 and 2, are those fun? never played those kind of rpgs
