The original statement was for AAA single-player FPS games, and of course it's a grim time for them. Don't make AAA shooters anymore; people will just buy Halo and Call of Duty like they always do. Instead, make a shooter of smaller budget and scale but actually put it out in a reasonable time: the market has been saturated with smaller indie FPS games that have been successes but nevertheless left the market disappointed with the release schedule and amount of content available (waiting 5 years after the first episode for the rest of the game but still no Deathmatch or Co-op). A more polished release put out in 2-3 years by a proper sized dev team would swing huge dick, rather than this 80-person $85mil game bullshit for their first time trying to make a shooter.

The original statement was for AAA single-player FPS games, and of course it's a grim time for them. Don't make AAA shooters anymore; people will just buy Halo and Call of Duty like they always do. Instead, make a shooter of smaller budget and scale but actually put it out in a reasonable time: the market has been saturated with smaller indie FPS games that have been successes but nevertheless left the market disappointed with the release schedule and amount of content available (waiting 5 years after the first episode for the rest of the game but still no Deathmatch or Co-op). A more polished release put out in 2-3 years by a proper sized dev team would swing huge dick, rather than this 80-person $85mil game bullshit for their first time trying to make a shooter.

There is a non-neglegible part of game dev that believes that there IS a perfect, objective, mathematical way to make a good game. Usually bean-counters.
But there's nothing that would shy away investors more than something as unpredictable as creativity. If you don't know how much you get back for funding shit because it's all experimental and requires vision then they'd rather invest their money elsewhere. Being able to find the selling formula and milking it for all eternity is good for investors, but luckily it doesn't work out that way so EA is getting the finger for their shit.

Why was the budget so fricking high? The game looks like an asset flip if we're being honest, the environments all look like they were assembled from Quixel scans. It does not look like a $125 million dollar game. Crysis had a budget of $22 Million for perspective.

The traditional 8-15 hour long linear singleplayer only game of the past is still mostly dead. Ironically the major exceptions to this are remakes like RE4 and FF7, but there are a few others like TLOU2 that are mostly linear singleplayer games that found success in the modern era where everything needs to be some kind of open world or multiplayer.
They're anything but dead because people want something shorted to play between whatever always-online progression-gated time sinks they're devoted to be it MMORPGs, etc.
