It marked a wide shift not only in terms of marketing but also the type of person who consumes the medium as well.

Most of my friends in college who "game" are into a select few video games. Apex, COD, GoW 2018, Cyberpunk. Much more of a wide casual audience now compared to the early 00s. The type of people who brought their gameboy colors and Pokemon to school are a lot different than these kinds of people. Also in terms of marketing, look at pic related. Used to be extremely edgy and had balls. Where would you see something like this today?

These kind of ads were interesting to be as it almost gives off a "counter-culture" vibe. After gamergate there's a lot less emphasis on this kind of aesthetic.

Because games now are not underground, and/or companies don't want to be underground. Wider audience, more sales, appeal to the public, etc., etc.

well maybe they shouldn't make game dev be so expensive

indie and AA devs can do it, the main thing fricking them in the ass is the lack of experience

              Shit comic
Advertising is remarkably ineffective for selling products or "changing opinions"; those are fact very subsidiary aims. It's mostly intended to inject a carefully curated range of physiognomies and alien racial types deep into your brain. It's a biogeographic assault.

Lets be real. Gamers lost to Gamergate. Gamergate was the worst thing that could have happened to gaming. A lot of people didn't think SJW's would infiltrate video games but look where we're at now.

It's not really gone. It's just that gaming media collectively decided they weren't doing that anymore. I'm sure Pissed of Pedro is still doing his thing. It's not like these people just went away.
