Rockstar doesn't have that worry, GTAVI will sell no matter what. In that case, MS would need to fork enough money to cover all the PS potential lifetime sales (over 100 million likely) plus whatever extra RS asks for.

Xbox fans want Phil Spencer to do it because in their mind, it singlehandedly kills PS and makes Xbox the no. 1 in the market. GTA games are huge, and GTA VI will be the biggest launch in the history of not just gaming but entertainment media as a whole, but at one game every ~10 years, it isn't nearly as valuable to Microsoft's goals for gaming as something like CoD.

'20-present is the "Xbox is dead, PS5 is having an identity crisis" years where PC has all the games, but they are still 95% console games. No one is doing anything that genuinely needs a PC to run it. No, not even those path traced CP77 tech demos. It's a game designed primarily to fit in console specs and failed due to incompetence, with a layer of 4090 spit polish on top.

The $350 Xbox Series X is still being sold. They didn't have any price drops in Black Friday but going into December a bunch of retailers dropped Series X to 350USD. Still available on my Walmart, still not going to buy the Xbox Series consoles because the top management doesn't care about making games and just want to sell subscriptions with actual slop filler. The Nintendo Switch on the other hand hasn't even had a price drop and its flying off the shelves in its 7th year.

Xbox as a brand has always had at best a tenuous grasp on life. Halo has always been its anchor to the ground, with Gears and Forza being a little extra support. Nothing else they have ever done has actually mattered, so when those IPs march over their hill in the early 10s and Mattrick comes in and forces Kinect down everyone's throat while trying to bring Orwell's future visions to reality with the Xbone, it all felt like a fast enclosing inevitability. The pillars are old, trust is tarnished, and Spencer has a good heart but had had no earth shaking ideas for renovation. What's left to care about?

I liked a number of Playstation games, but I wanted to play Halo and whatnot, so I got an Xbox. Years later I got a PS3 to play Demon's Souls and that's functionally it, wasn't really anything else besides Dragon's Dogma that I wanted to play on it.

They need to make sure that games perform the best on the worst performing console this generation so that's where the dev time goes. There's not as much time to make the Series X version really shine because there's not much reason to, no one fricking owns it. 5 million Series X consoles in the wild is a joke. The snowball effect is those 5 million Xbox Series X owners aren't going be getting physical releases. So if they bought it for the convenience, resell power, and disc ownership, they will be losing it when 3rd parties have no reason to make a disc release on Xbox anymore. The Series S is doing so much fricking damage and some of it is friendly fire. Even still it's in distant third place so WTF was the purpose of a 3rd worldie console to sell subscription gamepass.
The leaked mid gen revision is an adorably all digital Series X, the damage is already done. I remember seeing articles about retail stores dropping support for physical Xbox games as soon as next year because no one is buying them too. Xbox consumers either can't even buy them even if they wanted to because they bought the S or they don't care because they're GamePass only. If you care about physical, you will buy the games on PS5 anyway because Smart Delivery is so fricked that the majority of crossgen games only have the Xbox One version on disc and you have to download the entire game on the Series X anyway.
Even Starfield doesn't have the game on disc, you needed to download an additional 60GB for it to even function. Ah, I see. That's a very weird scenario for him to even bring up when there's enough demand for companies to have made both PS4 and PS5 SKUs so you can buy the one that will run off the disc, own your game, and be happy. The backwards compatibility mode that you brought up also turns that into a non issue, so even if consumers purchase the wrong SKU they can still put in the disc and play it in 20 years because they own their games.
The issue with Smart Delivery is that it's the only SKU available for nearly every crossgen game, so you're buying a disc that's completely worthless unless you have an Xbox One lying around, it's legitimately better to buy digital instead because you're forced to download the entire game anyway and you don't even own it if you buy it physically.. Not sure what he was even thinking trying to bring that point up, the way Smart Delivery was handled was a huge blemish on the Series X and seeing how the Series X has floundered, Microsoft arguably made the right call. There's 10 times more Xbox Ones than Series X consoles sold, targeting that was the pragmatic choice. Series X owners still get cucked though, like they always do.
The Series X missed the mark. On paper it's the stronger console, but where the rubber meets the road it falls flat, and it's not because PS5 is the default platform.
Microsoft made the same mistake they made last time. There was a rumor the PS4 was going to use GDDR5 but Microsoft believed there was no way they could secure large enough stocks for cheap enough so they denied the rumor and used DDR3 for the xbone. This was a disaster.
The Series X made a similar gaff. Sony was going for high raw clocks and most importantly SUSTAINED raw clocks. Microsoft believed that was a fool's game that would ruin the yields so they went with slower and wider even though every dev worth their salt can tell you that slow and wide is hard to keep the real world performance high with. They were wrong again, TSMC managed to fulfil Sony's pipe dream just fine and the PS5 has the narrow and fast GPU pipeline that devs want where the XSX is stuck at 60-80% utilisation due to parallel bottlenecks.
DirectX inefficiency vs. PSSDK is just the icing on the shit cake.
So much of a collapse that it oversold any other console out there, keep seething.

The issue is that after the PS4/Xbox One generation, people aren't looking at new consoles in a vacuum. They're going to consider whether they want to abandon their 3rd party library from the last generation.

The new consoles are more like GPU upgrades over your old rig rather than a brand new platform you want to invest in. In the past, you could look at a PS3 and 360 and go either way because you weren't really thinking about bringing your whole PS2 or Xbox Original collection with you. Nowadays, people assume they'll be bringing all their old games forward forever, and so they're going to pick the platform that lets them play those games.

activision was never the issue. the original raven devs split off to form human head studios, which was disbanded and absorbed by bethesda after their version of prey was canceled. so in actuality ms had everything they needed other than the IP which is dead anyhow. they could simply have gotten the raven devs at bethesda to make a new IP and market it as "from the creators of heretic and hexen" but as with every other part of mgs/xbox there is simply no inspiration to do such things, because ms is not a game company, nobody there actually cares about games, let alone knows about cult favorites like hexen. these moneyhatted participants care more about TV AND SPORTS which is how the xbox brand went into the shitter

So the amount of real $70 sales is up to the lesser amount of Xbox and steam users. All of a sudden Microsoft’s 10 billion dollar investment is hemorrhaging money because Bethesda’s sales are shit and there’s nothing on the earnings report.
What Sony is doing right compared to Microsoft is putting all its eggs in first party titles (which is what these consoles are built for in the first place) which leads to massive consumer retainment and compounding console sales. Looking Microsoft’s first party products (Starfield, Redfall, and especially Halo) it’s a very very sad sight. The hard truth is that Microsoft should have never been in the position to consider buying Activision(COD) because that’s what Halo is for, that’s their first party fps. Realizing that neglect made my jaw drop. It’s astounding what Microsoft has let 343 do to their flagship property. A console is only as valuable as its flagship.
The Xbone reveal and E3 2013 were the point of no return for Xbox, but the introduction of the Kinect is what really got the ball rolling. The 360 had a good thing for a while but Mattrick decided to change course by putting tons of Xbox's resources into the Kinect and chasing the Wii supercasual market (who were already collectively on the way out of gaming by the time the Kinect launched in late 2010).
Microsoft has been fire sales dropping the Series S to $250 and Series X to $350. Both are still in stock, the market just doesn't care anymore and it's all Phil Spencer's fault killing their own hardware platform. The Nintendo Switch and its OLED model both cost more than Series S and are outdated yet they run circles around Series consoles in sales month after month. Games matter and Phil Spencer doesn't care about great games.

Their naming convention has been entirely reactionary to how gamers referred to their previous consoles. People called Xbox 360 da 360 so microsoft named their next xbox the xbox one in hopes people would refer to it as da one. Instead people called it the xbone. So microsoft then decides to call their next xbox the xbox series x hoping that people would refer to it as xboxsex or xsex, but instead it's just dead and forgotten. The next xbox will probably just be called xbox alive and be entirely digital.

All the stuff about the one prelaunch caused them to irreparably bleed a chunk of their core audience of ps and pc. Their heavy push of anti-consumer changes and updates to their platform has also weened many casuals off gaming entirely and that was also a big chunk of their audience. Also a lot of their once flagship ips like Halo have fallen from grace.
I had an Xbox and a 360 and loved both of them. While I thought the PS2 was better than the Xbox, I played my 360 a lot more than my PS3. But when they announced the Xbox One would be always online, disallowed re-selling games or buying pre-owned games, disallowed lending games to your friends, required a stable broadband connection back when that stable connection wasn't a guarantee for American households, and had a mandatory Kinect, I realized I wasn't getting another Xbox.
They obviously walked those all back, and did some great stuff with backwards compatibility, but it was just too little too late for me. The launch plan showed what they wanted and what they thought people would accept, and it was so insulting it got me off the brand forever.

I don't give a frick myself because I play exclusively on PC, but most poeple I talk to either regrets buying a PS5 or is planning to buy an Xbox. The latter seems to be the cheaper option with roughly the same catalogue + game pass. The main selling point of PS was its exclusives, and those seem to be lacking nowadays.

GTA games are huge, and GTA VI will be the biggest launch in the history of not just gaming but entertainment media as a whole, but at one game every ~10 years, it isn't nearly as valuable to Microsoft's goals for gaming as something like CoD.

Xbox 360 sold because it was the dudebro console and PS3 didn't fully have its foot in the door with that demographic yet.

My guess is genuinely the shift BACK to PC that occurred in the late 00s and never stopped gaining momentum. The Xbox was the console with the cool American action games and mature RPGs like Morrowind and Kotor. When Crysis came out and the whole PC gaming graphics culture took off, Xbox never managed to retain that playerbase.
Then the PS4 has shit like PS+ and “exclusives” that the Xbone just didn’t compete with.
That being said I like my Series S just fine.
PC has got the monkey's paw treatment. 95-05 were the "PC" golden years where 3D accelerators and later GPUs working for actual PC exclusives that were doing PC exclusive things reigned supreme.
'06-'20 was the console years. PC lost its identity and instead became the dumping ground for 1080p60 versions of the 720p30 unreal slop consoles were "enjoying." The PC had the best versions, obviously, but they were still gamepad based console games with all the limited scope that requires.
'20-present is the "Xbox is dead, PS5 is having an identity crisis" years where PC has all the games, but they are still 95% console games. No one is doing anything that genuinely needs a PC to run it. No, not even those path traced CP77 tech demos. It's a game designed primarily to fit in console specs and failed due to incompetence, with a layer of 4090 spit polish on top.
In other words, PC has "won" but it's won the rotting corpse of an industry.

The $350 Xbox Series X is still being sold. They didn't have any price drops in Black Friday but going into December a bunch of retailers dropped Series X to 350USD. Still available on my Walmart, still not going to buy the Xbox Series consoles because the top management doesn't care about making games and just want to sell subscriptions with actual slop filler. The Nintendo Switch on the other hand hasn't even had a price drop and its flying off the shelves in its 7th year.

Xbox as a brand has always had at best a tenuous grasp on life. Halo has always been its anchor to the ground, with Gears and Forza being a little extra support. Nothing else they have ever done has actually mattered, so when those IPs march over their hill in the early 10s and Mattrick comes in and forces Kinect down everyone's throat while trying to bring Orwell's future visions to reality with the Xbone, it all felt like a fast enclosing inevitability. The pillars are old, trust is tarnished, and Spencer has a good heart but had had no earth shaking ideas for renovation. What's left to care about?

I liked a number of Playstation games, but I wanted to play Halo and whatnot, so I got an Xbox. Years later I got a PS3 to play Demon's Souls and that's functionally it, wasn't really anything else besides Dragon's Dogma that I wanted to play on it.
The Xbox One announcement was the critical event that sent the entire brand into an unrecoverable nosedive, everything that's happened since has just been a repercussion of that moment.

And since Xbox is shoving subscriptions down peoples throats there are less games being bought on Xbox which means games like Octopath Traveler 2 don't get ports without Microsoft paying for it and much less physical releases. NTA but what happened is that in the last report, we saw that out of 25 million Series consoles sold, 20 million were the Series S. So the Series S is now the target platform on the Xbox ecosystem. So not only is the Sony parity clause fricking Microsoft in the ass, but their own damn parity clause is doing it too like with BG3. They need to make sure that games perform the best on the worst performing console this generation so that's where the dev time goes. There's not as much time to make the Series X version really shine because there's not much reason to, no one fricking owns it. 5 million Series X consoles in the wild is a joke. The X has sold under half as much as the Wii U and might legitimately never hit Wii U numbers because everyone buys the Series S instead.

The snowball effect is those 5 million Xbox Series X owners aren't going be getting physical releases. So if they bought it for the convenience, resell power, and disc ownership, they will be losing it when 3rd parties have no reason to make a disc release on Xbox anymore. The Series S is doing so much fricking damage and some of it is friendly fire. Even still it's in distant third place so WTF was the purpose of a 3rd worldie console to sell subscription gamepass.
The leaked mid gen revision is an adorably all digital Series X, the damage is already done. I remember seeing articles about retail stores dropping support for physical Xbox games as soon as next year because no one is buying them too. Xbox consumers either can't even buy them even if they wanted to because they bought the S or they don't care because they're GamePass only. If you care about physical, you will buy the games on PS5 anyway because Smart Delivery is so fricked that the majority of crossgen games only have the Xbox One version on disc and you have to download the entire game on the Series X anyway.
Even Starfield doesn't have the game on disc, you needed to download an additional 60GB for it to even function. The Series X owners got burned incredibly hard, it will be interesting to see if they end up following Microsoft into the next generation or not because everything they bought the Series X for has been pretty irrelevant.

That's a very weird scenario for him to even bring up when there's enough demand for companies to have made both PS4 and PS5 SKUs so you can buy the one that will run off the disc, own your game, and be happy. The backwards compatibility mode that you brought up also turns that into a non issue, so even if consumers purchase the wrong SKU they can still put in the disc and play it in 20 years because they own their games.
The issue with Smart Delivery is that it's the only SKU available for nearly every crossgen game, so you're buying a disc that's completely worthless unless you have an Xbox One lying around, it's legitimately better to buy digital instead because you're forced to download the entire game anyway and you don't even own it if you buy it physically.. Not sure what he was even thinking trying to bring that point up, the way Smart Delivery was handled was a huge blemish on the Series X and seeing how the Series X has floundered, Microsoft arguably made the right call. There's 10 times more Xbox Ones than Series X consoles sold, targeting that was the pragmatic choice. Series X owners still get cucked though, like they always do.

The Series X missed the mark. On paper it's the stronger console, but where the rubber meets the road it falls flat, and it's not because PS5 is the default platform.
Microsoft made the same mistake they made last time. There was a rumor the PS4 was going to use GDDR5 but Microsoft believed there was no way they could secure large enough stocks for cheap enough so they denied the rumor and used DDR3 for the xbone. This was a disaster.
The Series X made a similar gaff. Sony was going for high raw clocks and most importantly SUSTAINED raw clocks. Microsoft believed that was a fool's game that would ruin the yields so they went with slower and wider even though every dev worth their salt can tell you that slow and wide is hard to keep the real world performance high with. They were wrong again, TSMC managed to fulfil Sony's pipe dream just fine and the PS5 has the narrow and fast GPU pipeline that devs want where the XSX is stuck at 60-80% utilisation due to parallel bottlenecks.
DirectX inefficiency vs. PSSDK is just the icing on the shit cake.

The issue is that after the PS4/Xbox One generation, people aren't looking at new consoles in a vacuum. They're going to consider whether they want to abandon their 3rd party library from the last generation.
It's like saying "Huh, I wonder if Steam users will move to consoles if consoles are a better deal for new hardware?"
The new consoles are more like GPU upgrades over your old rig rather than a brand new platform you want to invest in. In the past, you could look at a PS3 and 360 and go either way because you weren't really thinking about bringing your whole PS2 or Xbox Original collection with you. Nowadays, people assume they'll be bringing all their old games forward forever, and so they're going to pick the platform that lets them play those games.

Look at Starfield’s example: PlayStation was cut, most Xbox players are playing through gamepass which means there’s no actual sales as it’s all masked under Microsoft’s arbitrary gamepass revenue. So the amount of real $70 sales is up to the lesser amount of Xbox and steam users. The Xbone reveal and E3 2013 were the point of no return for Xbox, but the introduction of the Kinect is what really got the ball rolling. The 360 had a good thing for a while but Mattrick decided to change course by putting tons of Xbox's resources into the Kinect and chasing the Wii supercasual market (who were already collectively on the way out of gaming by the time the Kinect launched in late 2010).

All the stuff about the one prelaunch caused them to irreparably bleed a chunk of their core audience of ps and pc. Their heavy push of anti-consumer changes and updates to their platform has also weened many casuals off gaming entirely and that was also a big chunk of their audience. Also a lot of their once flagship ips like Halo have fallen from grace.
I had an Xbox and a 360 and loved both of them. While I thought the PS2 was better than the Xbox, I played my 360 a lot more than my PS3. But when they announced the Xbox One would be always online, disallowed re-selling games or buying pre-owned games, disallowed lending games to your friends, required a stable broadband connection back when that stable connection wasn't a guarantee for American households, and had a mandatory Kinect, I realized I wasn't getting another Xbox.
They obviously walked those all back, and did some great stuff with backwards compatibility, but it was just too little too late for me. The launch plan showed what they wanted and what they thought people would accept, and it was so insulting it got me off the brand forever.

He doesn't care about quality and just wants shit on Gamepass. He also failed to save the Xbox One. PS3 flopped early on outside Japan. Sony got the memo and was hellbent on fixing PS3. By the end, PS3 outsold 360 and had exclusives. When Wii U flopped, Nintendo made sure the next console would have a clear focus and vision. It worked. Microsoft has more money and resources than Nintendo and Sony Group combined, yet they somehow can't up with smaller companies.
Xbox has been totally mismanaged, and they bet everything on 1 thing that probably won't save the division. Phil is a hack.
