It’s one of my favorite games at the moment. Realistic enough to keep the Battlefield babies away without being as complex as games like Squad or Post Scriptum.

Towards the end of the 90s and early 00s, we had games like Medal of Honor, COD1&2, Wolfenstein but also movies like Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor, Enemy at the Gates, or the Band of Brothers series. All of this more or less at the same time.
The last great WW2 game was COD2, in 2005. And COD4, which was inspired by the recent Iraq War, finally killed the genre. WW2 was not important anymore, since there was a new kind of war, a more relatable one.

Allies had comparatively infinite reserves, and did enlist about twice as many as the Axis, but did not field that many more soldiers than Germans on each battlefield. Numerical advantage was slight in most encounters except for the very end, and some major points of contact had more axis soldiers.
They were notably more numerous in the battle of Moscow and still got their asses handed over to them. They were more numerous at the start of Stalingrad and about the same over the duration of the battle yet lost bigly. They completely blew up their initial numerical advantage in the battle of the bulge and overall all the western front in 1944.

WW2 games killed WW2 games. At first it started as, "Hey, what if Saving Private Ryan but video game" because it was the 50th anniversary of ww2 or something and everyone had a member boner over it. Medal of Honor sold gangbusters then Call of Duty sold a gorillion dollars thus the fad until it finally just died out after CoD4 made even more money. Every WW2 game was basically "JAPS BOMBED PEARL HARBOR, WE'RE GOING TO EUROPE" and proceed to fight in French farmfields and hedgerows until you reach Berlin. Only like two or three mainstream WW2 games were in the Pacific theater and NOBODY but CoD and BFV cared about the African theater outside of RTS

Then it has probably the best D-Day level i've seen, though it's pretty short.

IMO, WW2 is aesthetically boring. It’s thematically boring because it’s always been framed as a black and white good versus evil conflict (a lot of which is propaganda since Fascism is basically the Neoliberal equivalent of the original sin). Plus, even if you lean into the Wolfenstein-esque Nazi killing campy romp angle, that’s been done so many times at this point that it’s become old hat now.

WaW was the closest we ever got to "grey" in a WW2 game that was mainstream. I didn't play Brothers in Arms, but I don't think they showed off too many war crimes. WaW shows Russians executing unarmed prisoners and even lets you take part in it with molotovs. Japan is hard, it's war crimes, but Japan wasn't part of the conventions at the time so was it?

Yeah though I’ve not played in a few months. It’s not perfect, it has some optimisation to do but that continually gets better. It has a bit of a learning curve and is not CoD.
It’s one of my favorite games at the moment. Realistic enough to keep the Battlefield babies away without being as complex as games like Squad or Post Scriptum.

The last great WW2 game was COD2, in 2005. And COD4, which was inspired by the recent Iraq War, finally killed the genre. WW2 was not important anymore, since there was a new kind of war, a more relatable one.

In terms of grinding to the last man yes, but the Axis still had 1/3 of all enlisted. Allies had comparatively infinite reserves, and did enlist about twice as many as the Axis, but did not field that many more soldiers than Germans on each battlefield. Numerical advantage was slight in most encounters except for the very end, and some major points of contact had more axis soldiers.
They were notably more numerous in the battle of Moscow and still got their asses handed over to them. They were more numerous at the start of Stalingrad and about the same over the duration of the battle yet lost bigly. They completely blew up their initial numerical advantage in the battle of the bulge and overall all the western front in 1944.

This is modern myth/cope. The USSR was winning materially and strategically. Deep operations doctrine > Blitzkrieg. Soviet generals were better by the second half of the war, technology was competitive sometimes being better or worse. The only advantage Germans had was in the mid level among the offices at the tactics level and training. Which resulted in a higher but unsustainable K/D ratio in individual fights and the occasional pyrrhic victory increasingly crowded out by straight strategic loses.

WW2 games killed WW2 games. At first it started as, "Hey, what if Saving Private Ryan but video game" because it was the 50th anniversary of ww2 or something and everyone had a member boner over it. Medal of Honor sold gangbusters then Call of Duty sold a gorillion dollars thus the fad until it finally just died out after CoD4 made even more money. Every WW2 game was basically "JAPS BOMBED PEARL HARBOR, WE'RE GOING TO EUROPE" and proceed to fight in French farmfields and hedgerows until you reach Berlin. Only like two or three mainstream WW2 games were in the Pacific theater and NOBODY but CoD and BFV cared about the African theater outside of RTS
MOH Allied Assault has the entire first chapter focused on North Africa.
It's also one of the few games to have Norway as a battlefield.
oh nice, I'll have to play it. I only played Rising Sun as a kid on a GCN. Norway missions sound neat especially after the travesty of BFV's story in Norway, the multi maps are cool tho.
It's neat because the Norway bit is all about disguising yourself as an SS officer, infiltrate a German port and sabotaging some U-Boats.
Then it has probably the best D-Day level i've seen, though it's pretty short.

IMO, WW2 is aesthetically boring. It’s thematically boring because it’s always been framed as a black and white good versus evil conflict (a lot of which is propaganda since Fascism is basically the Neoliberal equivalent of the original sin). Plus, even if you lean into the Wolfenstein-esque Nazi killing campy romp angle, that’s been done so many times at this point that it’s become old hat now.
They’d have to do a greyer and more nuanced take to make it interesting again.

WaW was the closest we ever got to "grey" in a WW2 game that was mainstream. I didn't play Brothers in Arms, but I don't think they showed off too many war crimes. WaW shows Russians executing unarmed prisoners and even lets you take part in it with molotovs. Japan is hard, it's war crimes, but Japan wasn't part of the conventions at the time so was it?
Ironically, Japanese media has the most interesting depictions of WW2 because it was seen as a national trauma and a stain on their history.
Unlike the US and UK, where it was basically a moment where they could LARP as heroes.
Fictional stories created from trauma are always more interesting than power fantasies (which is what a lot of western WW2 media is).
