What kind of mental illness makes people read RPG build guides and copy them word for word in their "playtroughs"?

What kind of mental illness makes people read RPG build guides and copy them word for word in their "playtroughs"?

It's literally like letting someone else frick your wife as means of having sex with her

The only appeal of a game like Pathfinder is tinkering with build autism and exploring the system..
You could learn more in depth stuff from guides if you're an enthusiast but why just copy them, it's incomprehensible to me

If the gameplay in of itself is fun then i don't see what the problem is with copying a build. When i'm playing a good rpg the pride i feel in making the right choices with stat allocation or skill selection or whatever is secondary to the enjoyment i feel when interacting with the game's mechanics. Again, this is only if the game is fun. Pathfinder is a slog so this obviously wouldn't apply.

Copying a guide is not making choices you homosexual, and simply copying someone else is never cause for pride.

this site gets dumber by the day

        >independently make absolutely horrendous build
        >somehow trudge through until I reach a tough fight 15 hours into the game which I can't progress past due to my terrible build
        >I have now lost 15 hours of my life and I have to either abandon the game completely or play through those 15 hours a second time with a different build
does this make me a shitter? yes, without a doubt. but on the off chance op was genuinely asking why people look up builds, this is why I do it. I only do it for DND based games because there are dozens of classes and it's actually possible to make a truly bad character in those, unlike in simpler games like mass effect or elder scrolls or games with fewer customization options like alpha protocol or vtmb. I distinctly remember abandoning a nwn2 playthrough because my character was completely useless and ineffectual

I don't want to excuse copypasting builds but
Most games with 'free build potential' punish you horribly if your choices aren't optimal
Nobody wants to throw a +10 hour run into the trash because deep into the game you realize you can't beat the game that way or, even worse, you stop having fun with it

i feel the same way, in the past i'd be more willing to spend time restarting or messing with stuff but don't have the patience or time now. doesn't help when you're starting a new crpg you're not familiar with and don't know which builds are either favored or gimped by what's available/encountered in the campaign

Well while we're in the realm of role-playing you can just assume that when you're unable to ger past something they simply died, their story ending in tragedy.
We all know this is not how it works in the end, but the point of role-playing games is not supposed to be hitting big numbers, it's supposed to be creating stories. And not every story has a happy ending. So if you think about it that way you didn't waste those hours, you just played through the story of a hero that wasn't to be.

I do wonder about that sometimes. Like, if I play an RPG and only get partway through it until my character dies - particularly in games that give you a commentated death like Fallout does for example - can I say I finished that game, in that case? I may have not seen it through to a specific ending, but I did get AN ending.

Because some of us actually a life and things like a job or other responsibilities. I don't have the time to have a run get trashed because I didn't make the completely optimal choices and I don't have the time to do complicated math problems so I can make the correct choices. It's far easier and much safer use of my time to grab a guide and enjoy the story/gameplay. If I was 14 or a 30 year old NEET like you then maybe I could sit around all day playing the same game over and over again till I got it right.

I get using a guide if you're casual, but don't come to a place like this and try to put on airs to people that probably just taught you how to play through the same guide is all I ask. Why the hell would you come to a site like this anyway? Stick to your own kind on reddit.

Like this motherfricker. Motherfricker should be thanking the neets that got him through his game. Where do you think guides come from? You think so.i drinking writers on polygon can actually get good at a game like this?

I wouldn't say it's "wrong," but I certainly think it's fricking gay. I used to do this when I'd play something like Titan Quest because I didn't want to spec into something that sucked, but I've since realized that I don't think that's fun.

Build is a fun gameplay loop. People invent and post those gameplay loops, and you're free to choose which one suits you the most. And it's fine because you don't know what works well, and what has a good item support.
And when you know, using your own ideas is just as fine.

I don't know about following build guides 'word for word' but I'm not very smart, so I usually would prefer to follow someone else's logic on a build.
I started playing Fallout 1 recently and tagged Energy Weapons and Thrown Weapons because I wanted to throw grenades at people; only to find out you only really get any energy weapons really late in the game, and grenades are rare and expensive and you can only really effectively carry one or two.
In situations like that I'd prefer to follow someone's advice or guide.

Simple. You can't account for awesome things like Arcane Trickster's Sneak attack proccing on every hellfire ray, like thug's ability making "Demonstrate Weapon" run entire armies in fear or Kineticist's Clouds proccing not every round (on older versions) but every half-a-second. Neat things like that will take too much time to discover on your own, even with bag of tricks's instant max level.

    Okay guys, OP here again...
You missed my point. If you don't have the time to play the game and would rather bang chicks instead that's fine with me but what I'm asking is why play a cRPG? Especially Pathfinder

Play skyrim or morrowind or disco elysium or something, literally the entire appeal of Pathfinder, for exmple, are builds. And you are disregarding that and doing... What? Copying someone else's stuff?

Pathfinder dungeons suck ass, combat is good but it's all just a reflection of your build... Characters are some of the worst the genre has ever seen, story is ... okay? Art direction is league of legends tier..

You are telling me that you are enjoying all that and skipping the actual best part? Its like enjoying a pizza and eating only the crust.

I'm the anon who posted about fallout - I started playing Fallout 1 because people said 1 and 2 are the best of the series. People tend to talk about the stories and characters in CRPGs with quite high regard, so I figure there's some kind of benefit to playing the games, otherwise nobody would mention them.

Hey OP, I too took time out of my busy chick banging schedule (shit was SO cash) to talk about RPGs more here so here it is:
You will never get a straight answer because most people are too dumb to come up with their own builds and don't want to admit that they are lacking in things like the ability to weigh opportunity costs against efficiency or a constant flow of tight pussy so they do what is know as fronting.

It would be a shattering blow to their psyche if they came from reddit to here and had to admit that, or find out they actually have less money and sex than someone from /misc/.

      Except for this dude:

I've realized that following build guides is moronic more often than not since it's easier to actually play the game and find out what works and what doesn't work and for which reasons as opposed to listening to some strangers thoughts on systems you don't even have hands on experience with yet. I remember when I was little I listened to some random person's build guide on Fallout 3 and he recommended having 9 endurance to start with. Upon playing the game I quickly learned that endurance is effectively useless you're doing a melee character since if you're sneaking the goal is to not get hit or even discovered to begin with.

It's fine if poor builds make a game more difficult or even require you to adjust the difficulty downward, but they should never soft-lock you. The real problem isn't build guides but playing games known to require them. The answer is to simply play a better game.

That's respectable. If a game's really complex it's hard to stick the first landing but it shouldn't be a design goal to be ok with this type of failure.

    >The risk of high tech and miscellaneous weapons.
I mean, true, but it seems odd to have an option to build into your character that is pretty much useless for most of the game. I can get it in a tabletop context where you have a DM that can adjust events to make a character's skills more appropriate (or where the player has more flexibility to come up with solutions that fit their build) - but in a game where your choices throughout are fixed, it seems odd. Like, if Fallout had an element of randomisation where you might encounter an laser gun early on, which you couldn't use unless you had tagged Energy Weapons, then I could see the benefit. (maybe that's the case already with the random encounters while you travel? I don't know)
