I thought the combat was pretty good, honestly. especially for the era. you gotta remember this came out around the same time as morrowind, and was completely overshadowed as a result
>for the era
I thought Morrowind combat was also aids back on release but I guess I had higher standards for some reason. Or was just expecting something more "real time" and less "wing and a dice roll". Not that it ended up mattering much. I always suggest to anyong trying Arx out to focus on being a mage. The combat is a non issue when you just launch fireballs at everything. Then you get to focus on all the interesting world building.
I like Arx but >especially for the era
this doesn't really mean anything, games with far more engaging combat than it released both just the year before and just the year after it.

Can you name one? Remember, we're talking first person melee combat.
It's just Ultima Undeworld combat but smoother and with a cool magic system. Sure there were more dynamic combat systems around at that point but if you want that dungeon crawling niche filled then Arx Fatalis is probably the pinnacle of that style and I don't think anything's filled that niche since.
Arx has a far better atmosphere than Morrowind, but I just can't get into it. I made an attempt a few years back where I made a mage and had no spells for several hours until I was given a chest with what seemed like all of them all at once.
That doesn't sound right. You find plenty of runes in shops or by exploring. Some spells unlock only after increasing spellcasting and some are just hidden and can be figured out via logic.
Yeah - to elaborate on this Anon's point, you practically start with Aam Yok after escaping the prison cell (in a downwards direction), and Taar is behind a locked door in the prison area, if memory serves.
I mean, you kinda have to be checking skeletons for stuff, but surely Anon had been doing that? Magic is definitely quick and easy to get to the best shit...
Got this sitting in my library since 2022. Should give it a try someday but I heard that trying to play it on modern hardware is a nightmare. How true is that?
It plays flawlessly with the arx libertatis source port. Widescreen, raw mouse, ui scaling all the good stuff.
>run it with the source port >already looks crisp as hell just from the intro
Hell yeah. Been looking for something Morrowind-esque for a while now, looks like I hit the jackpot. Thanks, fellas, looking forward to this one. Reminds me a lot of Dark Messiah.
also without spoiling too much, here are some tips:
magic is amazing, do a magic build, a lot of the magic can interact in the environment in "immersive sim" kind of ways to break the game in a good way
you find spell books, but these aren't required to actually cast the spells, they are just more like "recipe books", and some spells are just never told to you at all and you have to discover them by experimenting with different rune combinations using logic (once you know what each rune translates to, then you think "what if I combines these concepts together?"), some of these are RIDICULOUS and amazing
don't expect to find everything on your first playthrough, the game has some optional stuff that's quite easy to fail if you don't already know what's going to happen
try to solve puzzles laterally, the game took a lot of things into account for multiple ways to complete objectives (this ties back into what I said earlier about magic being broken) and rarely penalises you for thinking outside the box to solve something
More of a skull-crusher myself, but sure. Dark Messiah spoiled me with the melee combat mighty foot my beloved and I haven't tried the magic there as much as I should've. Guessing this one is the kinda game that wants you to do multiple playthroughs?
>Guessing this one is the kinda game that wants you to do multiple playthroughs?
if you explore enough and try stuff out as you unlock more and more spells you can find pretty much everything in one go. enemies don't respawn so you're really very free to explore every nook and cranny without it being annoying to do so.

Cool. I'll keep that in mind. Digging the SS1-like UI.
Melee's satisfying too, if much more simple. There's something intensely gratifying about going all STR and hearing Am go HYEAP and slice a goblin in half even with ultra-shitty starting blunt instruments due to how fricking hard you hit.
As if you've always got Dark Messiah's adrenaline bar full. Playing a glass cannon is simply fun, STR or INT. Until you get to THAT part and sorely regret your 6 CON ways. DEX is pretty useless, though.
>DEX is pretty useless, though.
Thankfully I went all in on INT, STR and CON. Was thinking if DEX could've been useful to have.

he left arkane and ms/bethshit/arkane own the ip (i think) and i doubt they care about it even if the game was fully crowdfunded and cost them nothing to make.
He could have called it something else. Its not like arkhane can copyright the word Arx.
Could call it Arx Terminus and blend a bit of gene wolfe dying earth fantasy.

It doesn't have to use the IP, it can be a spiritual sequel. Mind you, buying the Arx IP back is probably super cheap.
I weep for the first time player that thought " Oh I'll be a cool stealthy thief type" their first attempt. Maybe you can make it work. Seemed largely useless to me.
I don't think the spellpower skill actually does anything. Every speedrun I have seen, they only put points into the mana reserves skill. And you can use all spells without meeting the "tier" requirement.
>unstable wall that can't be broken even with the magic missile at the start
Dickin' around with the Ignite spell, but does that mean I have to come back with an explosive? Don't want to find out there's secret loot behind that wall.
>she gets kidnapped >go on whole-ass rigamaroll to save her from cultists >reload multiple times cause she keeps dying, realize i'm doing something wrong >finally save her, free her >runs home to her mother >mother thanks me, gives me paltry reward >talk to her >not a thank you >"you have a big nose!"
I don't know but it's way better than Jeff or Ja'Quandre
What kind a name is Sareth?
i am shaegging ur mum LLLLLLLOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLL
fricking destroyed
The guy who gives it to you says what it means. Also sounds like avatar, kind of.
it means "he who has no name"
It's another tongue, you wouldn't get it
The combat in this game is complete ass but I still think it's a phenomenal game.

Friendly reminder there is a rune on top of a support beam inside the goblin kingdom, which you basically need to Levitate to in order to get.
>support beam
wasn't it some kind of wood bridge up on the ceilling?
Also the dragon lair can only be reached with levitate.
I just recall it's not reachable without levitate. Maybe it's another bridge or something, it's been a while.
If its the one I am thinking about you could platform there but its extremely clunky.

Not at all if you've got four minutes. Most games these days worth a shit have fan patches you can find if you just look at their pcgamewiki entry.

it's made by the same guys so that tracks

I don't know.
I wish raphael would have made an arx 2 instead of his shitty western top down game.
he left arkane and ms/bethshit/arkane own the ip (i think) and i doubt they care about it even if the game was fully crowdfunded and cost them nothing to make.

he's currently making a first person immersive sim, I hope it will be similar to arx this time
This, Arx was peak Arkane.
It doesn't have to use the IP, it can be a spiritual sequel. Mind you, buying the Arx IP back is probably super cheap.
It's a mispronounciation of "Am Shagger", cause the character is an interdimentional gigachad.
I weep for the first time player that thought " Oh I'll be a cool stealthy thief type" their first attempt. Maybe you can make it work. Seemed largely useless to me.

There is a softcap, but you still need a certain level to get the page 10 spells to unlock
At the very least it has a very visible effect on Fireball size and damage. Big spellpower fireballs are like whole-screen flashbangs.

Pickaxe
>you have a big nose!
She will get the correction she deserves
>she gets kidnapped
>go on whole-ass rigamaroll to save her from cultists
>reload multiple times cause she keeps dying, realize i'm doing something wrong
>finally save her, free her
>runs home to her mother

Should have fricking left her tied to that alter
The ambient soundtrack is amazing.
Also the soundscape of the deeper caves is terrifying
Amazing setting.
Too bad Arkane could never relax. Every project they have worked on has been cursed on some level. They deserved better
Am is a vulgar way to say pussy in turkish, his name is pussy shagger.
