What made Elden Ring such a smash hit? These are Nintendo and Cawadoody sales figures for a game by a AA Japanese developer known for challenging and unforgiving gameplay and intentionally obtuse storytelling
It's called soul
No it's Elden Ring, retard. Not one of the Souls
Reddit tier humour anon
Well, obviously. That's where I'm from
its dark souls 4 and just built further on the success
It was shilled to hell and back. Shilled ten times harder than any call of duty or nintendo game
You can't with with just shilling. A lot of games were shilled to hell and back. Horizon for example — both of them were shilled to the extreme, but neither of them was an astounding success.
Le game le thrones connection plus an absolutely rabid cultlike fanbase completely incapable of digesting criticism because to do so would mean admitting to themselves that they wasted their lives dedicating themselves to acting like they're better than casuals at video games.
They are though, I mean, they are better.
Streamer bait and good marketing starting with Dark Souls - Prepare to Le Die!
>Dark Souls - Prepare to Le Die
You fags just can't stop seething about that line huh? it's been 10+ years now, get over it. Hell, not even FromSoft or Bamco are doing that kind of marketing anymore either.
>No story
>Barren open world
>No challenge
>Dualwielding makes the game even more trivial
>Input reading
>Magic is overpowered
>Just summon ashes to win, bro!
>Bosses are easier to stagger now, meaning the game is even more casual friendly
>Most weapon abilities trivialize the game
>Like 75% of the game is optional
>No solo invasions
>No covenants, meaning that PvP has no point
>4 endings are the same (kek)
>Teleports (WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING?????)
>Intro is a powerpoint slideshow
>"Altering costumes" system is the dumbest idea ever
>Fast travel
>They changed Malenia's white VA to some moron for woke points (OH NO NO)
>All big bosses are garbage
>Cuck shit
>Feminist shit
>Simp shit
>Furry shit
>chud shit
>Gay shit
>Pedophile shit
>You have to simp for a woman in order to access some of the game's content (lmao)
>Paid DLC
>Final boss is a chud and a giant fish instead of kino old man battle like in literally all previous games
>Skyrim dungeons (that have no rewards)
>Boss reuse
>Asset reuse
>Worst camera ever
Is Elden Ring the worst game of all time?
>no story
As if this is a bad thing. I hate movie-lovers so damn much.
>Having a story in a game is.... LE BAD because... Well..... BECAUSE IT JUST IS, OK??????????????
Go watch a movie with a controllere in your hands, gay.
>these are nintendo sales figures
nope, but a lot closer that
>call of duty sales figures
not even close retard
I'm thinking about replaying it. Are bandit's curved sword a fun weapon to use?
The only unfun weapons are the shorter 1H hammers.
Paid promotion out the ass
I'll never buy an open world souls game ever again. I hated it.
FromSoft has managed to build their brand over the years. That and the fact that AAA releases were scarce back when it was out.
Because the game is choke full of content and it respects your time, money and actually treats you like an actual human being able to make decisions by themselves.
Keep in mind that the industry has been growing heavily for years, so for a huge budget multiplat release 20m is no longer that impressive.
This game is selling to an audience of like 300 million people and it sold 20 million. Solid, but nothing insane. Compare this to TotK which is going to sell 35 million to an audience of 130 million and that's a lot more impressive.
I think TotK is going to cap very soon at around 15 million. The people who played BOTW already bought it. ER still has DLC to drop to make it to another 5-10 million given that's another world.
>I think TotK is going to cap very soon at around 15 million.
Delusional
Luigi's Mansion is gonna pass 15 million and you think a Zelda game is gonna do less?
that's crazy, i've been playing this Elden Ring file for over a year straight / 500hrs. True gem of a game
absolute kino
if anyone ITT hasn't watched this, watch it
Unironically the George R. R. Martin bullshit and it delivering on everything it promised.
This. Sold me and I had never played a Souls game. Loved the game.
Despite destroying the nuZeldachud game and making them cower in fear for over a year, ER is still mediocre trash compared to Sekiro and Dark Souls series.
It's weird because I fucking love Souls 1, 2 and 3, but I'm ambivalent towards Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring. They're just too easy, I never got stuck like in the Souls games, shit I barely even died.
Nothing compares to the fist Dark Souls playtrough but the other Dark Souls games are trash. Sekiro is pretty much unreachable at this point though in terms of pure quality.
Even Bloodborne fares better than ER as a game. I guess I was just exhausted from all the bloat and reused crap from the previous games that it made me drop ER quickly. I think it has the best art from all of the games, but these types of games benefit from linearity.
>destroying the nuZeldachud game
TOTK sold more in 3 days than ER sold in over a year.
It would cap very soon and ER would continue to sell more when the DLC drops.Shouldn't you be at a Zelda NTR thread now?
You have a very strange fixation on totk
It's a game for casuals. Of course it's popular
fromsoft slop tards are mentally deranged idiots who think they're gaming geniuses for doing basic trial and error tasks and simple memorization and jerking each other off about it
>i can beat le elder grimogomorph with this little bit of time and effort (because i previously wasted a bunch of time through trial and error to learn 1 simple trick)
Marketing and Martin's name.
>What made Elden Ring such a smash hit?
Normies love i-frame roll button mash. They refuse to play "souls-like" games unless they have i-frame roll animation. They've been buying i-frame roll games for 15 years.
what's i-frame roll, again? where you roll around like a fucktard around an enemy?
good marketing and it's the 10th identical game they've churned out, they kept trying until they succeeded.
>”identical”
Are you dumb? I swear, people who hate fromsoft ignore the fact that that’s how most games franchises are and every game is pretty much a spiritual successor because Miyazaki doesn’t like using the same story. You’ll never hear people say this about Mario, Zelda, Kirby, final fantasy, Cod, battlefield, Metroid, Castlevania, Pokémon. It’s apparently only from that iterates on games. Grow up mongaloid. .
The main reason it sells well is because it heavily targets the PC market which is the biggest platform by far with the fewest major games. It's basically like the Mario/Zelda of PC.
Of the 5 platforms Elden Ring was on it sold 50% of its sales on PC alone.
>PC
A game made by talented devs that put some actual effort in, which is now a fucking rarity.
My first experience with this game was it running at 20 fps on pc. Last time I played it it ran smoother but it's just not even remotely good as a pc port. Weird since their last game on pc was a good port. Not great but certainly not terrible.
People were genuinely hyped about Elden Ring. It was the strongest thirst I have seen for a video in like a decade. Unlike nintendo games, fifa, call of duty and all that other garbage the fans buy without thinking everyone genuinely looked forward to the game.
Yeah nobody cared about tears of the kingdom... What fucking world do you live in? Psycho.
The hype was about a game that never existed and not botw 1.5. And when the trailers dropped about fusing a stick to a stone the hype was just a joke.
I haven't bought it yet but I will probably after the dlc drops, idk if the game is cheap enough for me to justify buying it. I bought all of dark souls on sale
hype, i guess? everyone said it was the bestest shit ever, so here we are.
there are several factors
>George RR Martin
>came out in the middle of a horrid dry spell
>actually marketed for a change
>the audience From has grown for over a decade providing hype to convince normalfags
Honestly I wonder how much money this game even made. It probably cost about 200 million to make, and then you have the big question of marketing and we have no idea what that cost. Let's say 300 million total. With 20 million sales and an average profit per sale of let's say $30 (maybe a bit less, hard to say), that's about 600 million dollars or a profit of around 50 million per year.
Clearly successful, and I'm sure fromsoft is very happy about it, but is it really that impressive? There's a reason why most big games are filled with microtransactions these days, and it's that even if you sell a ton of copies the budgets are so large that the profit doesn't end up that big.
I mean for a Jap game outside of Nintendo's, that's pretty fucking huge.
But to be fair, most Japanese games have nowhere near this budget. I think it's fair to say Elden Ring is the biggest budget Japanese game ever, by a solid margin. So you have to factor that in.
And when you do...is it really that impressive? I feel like Monster Hunter Rise probably made more profit just because of the lower budget.
I'm sure ff15 and forspoken had bigger budgets. elden ring hardly doesn't look like it should've had a bigger budget than ds3. In general japanese games don't even come close to the scale of western AAA games.
>elden ring hardly doesn't look like it should've had a bigger budget than ds3.
There was one year between bloodborne and DS3. Not to suggest DS3 only had 1 year of dev time, probably half the team was working on each, but meanwhile their full team was working on Elden Ring for 6 years and they had a big marketing push they didn't have for DS3. The budget is definitely a lot higher. I would honestly assume that Elden Ring was one of the top 10 most expensive games ever made.
ER isn't impressive in terms of production value. I really don't see how you could think it's one of the most expensive games made unless you're limiting yourself to jrpg's.
I dunno man, is it even that expensive? Take Forspoken for example, it was supposedly the prime video game of Square Enix with realistic graphics, open world, Hollywood writers and it cost 100+ million to make. FromSoft had the opportunity to reuse their old animation rigs, gameplay framework and existing game engine that's iterated over the years, not to mention lack of fancy CG animation, that saved a hell of a lot of money.
Ok open world design with actual exploration. Remember i didnt say great, its still bad in many ways with the repetitive caves and catacombs but better than anything else out there
have you considered that its just fuckin' good? shit is a certified fucking hood classic masterpiece.
Has Capcom ever sold a game of this caliber? Each individual game even Resident Evil only sold up to less than 10 million in year.
The open world meme + le poopoo fetish man George RR Martin writing which led to a lot fo celebrity marketing. Having a no downside 'I win' button in the form of summons, which if you abuse them make it one of the easiest souls games, helped too.
george r Martins name.
that's it.
Once you get over yourself and enjoy it for what it is, it becomes peak From in many ways. Play it with the music off and just lose yourself in the unbelievable world they created. Aesthetics alone carry it so far but the little nuances to combat make it even better. Torrent is easily the best horse in gaming btw.
Torrent is a good boy. Even storywise he's one of the biggest reasons your char is successful. Not being able to use him vs. Elden Beast is a travesty
You are not meant to use Torrent because the fight isn't made for that
Yeah, I admit that I was being autistic when I disliked ER and quit playing it. The sick joke that is TOTK snapped me to my senses.
>What made Elden Ring such a smash hit?
12 years of putting out straight kino games and growing each game released popularity and sales. it was a matter of time before one of their games went full mainstream
I think it was just really good marketing for once
The "re-reveal" trailer was one of the best trailers I've seen and was shown in a way that appealed to the masses while still retaining that core "Souls" feel
The pause in marketing unironically helped too. The space between the 2019 reveal to 2021 re-reveal certainly brought the hype in with Fromfags thirsty for any bits of info, not to mention them keep doing that OOOOH memes and demanding Geoff Knighley to say on what's what whenever he's on stage.
Im still mad that it ran like dogshit on launch and fanboys were coming out of the wood work to tell people with top of the line pc builds that their computers weren't good enough.
Mostly good marketing.
it helps that it's the best action adventure game ever made
>Capitalize on the "open world" game genre and actually make a good game
>Throw in some min-max build making autism, waifus, and insanely bullshit optional boss fights
That's all it takes. Innovation. And rehashing bosses to create artificial padding.
That's why I put 400 hours into elden ring and still fuck around in co-op and sometimes PvP.
What surprised me the most was how many options the game gives you, even at RL1 +0 weapons you can still get to Haligtree with almost no issues if you abuse status effect buildup, blade of death, the infinite fp flask and spirit summons.
>release the same game for the 10th time but now with ubisoft towers
>"innovation"
words of praise have no meaning. Just like the dude saying the game "respects your time".
>ubisoft towers in Elden Ring
Please elaborate what ubisoft towers in Elden Ring you are talking about.
He probably meant the Divine Towers,
I hope not. Because the only thing those have in common with ubisoft towers is that they are, you know, towers.
He's talking about the divine pillars that you see for a grand total of 5 minutes to activate great runes.
Except for Radahn's which has an optional, but bullshit fight and an amazing weapon.
I feel like all of them were supposed to be or have mini dungeons like Caelid's but they didn't manage to do them all up like that. Something modders can definitely fix though.
Also the post boss room in Caelid's where you get Godslayer's was obviously meant to lead somewhere.
I remember the dataminers talking about how the towers supposedly be able to bring change to the open world with meteors and such. Sounds like bullshit but with how barren the content of the towers are, they might be on to something.
Originally the deal with the crucible knights is that they'd have generally been on top of the towers and killing them would unleash a meteor that was being held back which would change something in the map. They ended up scrapping all of these except for the one that happens when Radahn is defeated to get into Nokron.
Friede <3
Do you think Miyazaki overdid it with feet in this game? It's becoming ridicilous.
I just find it very funny when Shazam lost terribly the year it came out. Unpredictable high sales numbers, winning GOTY 2023, and the lastly, having his sequel flopped terribly that they pulled it out from theaters and straight to disk.
But Shazam won though. He said ER would be a piece of shit and it came out as a piece of shit for trannies.
Motherfucker, how many times this thing get posted ? I feel like 7 times "something something ER sold more than X"
For me, it's Blaidd
Discord link?
I will never play videogames again since I can just watch the cutscenes without gameplay on youtube, but From's stuff has something magical in it. I'm pretty sure I would hate playing the games but I love what they're doing with the art direction, music, etc. Very artistic stuff.
That's incorrect though. TOTK has a story, the open world is not barren and it is pretty difficult. You lost.
For me it was 6/10 at best and back during ds2 days I had idea of elden ring style open world dark souls game because i was an mmo fag. The idea was good but it requires too big of a team to pull off and from is know to rush half assed games
https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2023/05/18/no-one-understands-how-nintendo-made-the-legend-of-zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom/?sh=12049ea7bfb1
There are literal studies being conducted on how this game was made. Nintendo did things that should not be possible, things that are baffling all other inferior developers. It is mind-blowing and you are coping hard because your Elden Shit you shill isn't anywhere near as acclaimed or technically sophisticated.
TotK=best game ever made by human hands.
>obtuse storytelling
Gradually witholding info about mysteries to the player doesn't mean obtuse storytelling when there's a payoff
>challenging and unforgiving gameplay
It simply respects the player.
More than anything, there wasn't much competition.
It's an ok game but nothing else came close.
The games industry is pathetic now.
You wouldn't get a proper answer on Ganker
Anon Souls became mainstream normiecore at 1. DeS and pre-PC DS1 were the only games in the series that were still niche, everything after that was mainstream.
It also helps that ER allows newer players to play the game with how overpower the summon and magic systems are in this game which allow them to progress their skill in a linear progression instead of having huge filters like Lady Butterfly or other area-restricted bosses in previous games.
Then, they can choose to play as John Elden Ring with an iron sword if they want the extra Soul challenge.
they saw Ranni in the trailer
Has here anyone worked in a game company like FromSoftware?
Fuck off creep
It’s a good game and the only ones who seethe about it are tendies
it is the greatest game ever made
