Looking at the art reminds of a time when I wasn't jaded, the world wasn't devoid of romance and mystery... just for a moment I felt as if life is worth living.
>feels like an adventure >worlds that are satisfying to explore >good amount of player expression through gameplay >universe feels mysterious and dangerous >characters aren't moronic yet
>Riku turns to the darkside because Sora replaced him with a cartoon Duck and Dog.
yeah even as a kid that felt fricking dumb to me >"oh my friend met some new friends....OBVIOUSLY HE HATES ME AND IS REPLACING ME"
like homie what
belts and zippers were cool and Squeenix could do no wrong
disney was lame kiddy shit, yet we see mickey fricking dudes up with a sword. donald & goofy hold shit down the entire game, it was all unexpected
a good action rpg as a base to work from was cool, and the wacky nomura shit was a good enough payoff after getting through disney worlds
sephiroth annihilating your stupid ass to kingdom come was quite fricking great chernabog boss fight was kino
Serious answer? Simplicity of design. A coming of age story of two friends fighting over the heart of a girl. At it´s core that´s what the original game was.
Nomuring (over-complicating) things and trying to explain the nature of light and darkness fricked things up.
This is the best answer. KH1 has a great story and great gameplay, even if you know nothing at all about all the references. The references were just icing on the cake.
The magic is in the fairytale-like storytelling as said, propped up by good presentation.
Picrel is the reason Vagrant Story and the first KH share the same mystic flair that you can't find in the other games. They are similar in many more aspects when you look into it.
Literally an easy to follow button masher creatively sovlful and unique in concept. Also, it's a disney final fantasy crossover and, as such, probably one of the greatest crossovers to ever happen. I mean, who thinks of shit like that? Surely not corporate bigwigs, yet here Kingdom Hearts stands.
The emphasis on magic. Unlike KH2 where you can get around challenges with RC, Forms, and Reflect, your best defense options in KH1 were Aero, rolling and tech. You had to learn what magic was effects and in some cases it could net you a shorter time on a boss than a previous run.
The trio's involvement in stories didn't feel as forced as it did in 2 and 3, AND despite introducing the autistic rule that the travelers can't mess up the natural order of the worlds, the villains do it anyway and colluded with eachother. KH1 sold the look and feel even today.
>simple good vs evil story >hasn’t gotten overblown with side characters and convoluted plot points yet >Final Fantasy popularity at an all time high and Disney at a good point as well >big crossover between two radically different IPs is still a novel concept >solid gameplay
It was lightning in a bottle
It's just a solid action JRPG with fun Disney characters. I didn't play it till like a year ago so I have zero nostalgia for it but it's a good game. Best way I can describe the story and characters is "comfy cringe". I still need to play through KH2 at some point.
>play it on critical and enjoy.
This is fine but that's also a flaw. Play below critical and it basically becomes a button masher. Proud has a bit of challenge but that's it. KH1 had much more balanced gameplay and wasn't a button masher even on lower difficulty.
Very simply good v evil story combined with the novelty of Disney+Final Fantasy crossover. Mix in a very robust and addictive combat system and some meme worthy voice acting and it's a surefire hit.
Autism
You were 12
I didn't play KH1 until my mid-20s. It's a great game. Get fricked "you were just a kid" homosexuals.
Mentally you are still a kid
You're a manchild then because i'm 26 playing through it for the first time and it's a pain in the ass and half the levels are just terrible.
People can like this game for nostalgia but you're mental if you play this for the first time as an adult and genuinely think it's good
A great game and an innocent mind.
You were 12 years old and you got to see babbys first marvel crossover event or whatever.
Unexpectedly good crossover game.
Came at a time when Disney and Final Fantasy were very popular.
>be child
>exposed to edgy for the first time
i never played it, i watched my older brother play 1 and 2, shit was cash.
We were young and disney movies back then were actually good. Also one the last squaresoft games.
Looking at the art reminds of a time when I wasn't jaded, the world wasn't devoid of romance and mystery... just for a moment I felt as if life is worth living.
Good sense of adventure, heartless were kinda spooky(before becoming goofy in KH2), Kairi was hot, fun gameplay despite not being perfect, etc.
Nah I was in my 20s when I played through the collection and this one definitely stuck out as the best.
Oh my God..

Riku turns to the darkside because Sora replaced him with a cartoon Duck and Dog.

It was just a simple story that didn't take itself too seriously and the entire appeal of it was "hey what if FF characters in disney worlds"
of course, then nomura had to go off the deep end and immediately spiral the game into moronic autistic fanfiction bullshit after the first game

Now I need to play Vagrant Story.
Why did Akiyama not work on any other KH games past 1?

For me? Combat and final fantasy
I hate disney

KH2FM is the greatest action game of all time, play it on critical and enjoy.
Not your first time through though
What are you a pussy? Proud just turns enemies into damage sponges.
Yeah, that's why Standard mode exists

why are people so delusional.
It actually made use of magic and didn't have the endless combos that encouraged button mashing.
Yōko Shimomura and high production quality
By having actual level design instead of the more streamlined levels in 2 and the empty open levels in 3
Very simply good v evil story combined with the novelty of Disney+Final Fantasy crossover. Mix in a very robust and addictive combat system and some meme worthy voice acting and it's a surefire hit.
It was a very quality made game, when most crossovers are simply just cynical cash-grabs.
