Bingo. We are so blessed to have had those 3 as companions for gen 7. If it was another normal season we would be malnourished from a Chicken-chan-only diet. For as much story as SM has, the trial captains rarely have as much characterization as game Lillie.
SM anime was unironically kino. It's just homosexuals couldn't enjoy a bit of slice of life. They needed Team Rocket to be causing issues every episode. It was a breath of fresh air compared to what we normally get. Then they just dropped it all and made Ash gay for the final season

They made them the big three in the anime as if they were always friends. In the games the focus was more on Lillie and (You).
Each girl was fleshed out evenly, with Lillie only having a little more than everyone else. Even still, the girls were fairly balanced and had their own niche without stepping on one another's traits. The fact that Sun and Moon managed to have such a large cast without making anyone irrelevant (Yes, even the fat kid whose name I forgot how to spell) was a surprise. Sure, the sudden and jarring art direction change may have weeded out the lesser "fans", but the quality cast more than made up for any minor inconveniences.
>Lillie was the pampered rich girl without being a sassy brat, and she grew as a character over the course of the series to be a competent fighter (though mostly a sideliner). She didn't carry the "main girl" aura other series girls have, though she did get quite a bit of development compare to Mallow and Lana.
>Mallow was consistent from day one to the end, being the team chef/medic.Lillie would help her with medical activities at the end when things were rough, but Mallow was THE team medic. She was also a pleasant character who could cheer up the team easily. She also had the distinction of being Lana's childhood friend.
>Lana was the playful character who was able to stand on the battle stage with Ash and Kaki. Though she got absolutely fricking wrecked by Guzma, the fact remains that she was the female side's battler. On top of that, she was playful and somewhat tomboyish to contrast with how girly Lillie and Mallow were
Was one girl better than the others? In personal opinions, sure. Were all three great characters? Hell yes. As the other anon said, the three were equally the main girl unlike in the games, and that was a big improvement.
