I remember the shotguns in this game felt really good to use.
They were at least until mid to late game where every enemy was armored then it was better to go for accuracy. Max Payne 3 had the same thing
Doesn't matter too much in Max Payne 3 though because all you need to do is land a single pellet to the head.
>sounds good
>damage doesn't fall off a cliff after 5ft
That's it really
>damage doesn't fall off a cliff after 5ft
I've always felt those were glorified sword
The 'shotgun-as-a-melee-weapon' trope is fine as long as it's viable 'and' there are other shotguns that have more realistic range. Doom II being the classic example.
needs to sound and feel hefty and strong, enemies need to react accordingly and be stunned or blown away
reasonable range, while maintaining a drawback
needs a sick reload animation
>looks good
>sounds good
>kills good
>this thing was a fricking PS2 game
The SPAS was slow and cumbersome in BLACK and had so much fricking recoil it was like a cartoon gun. This game is overrated as frick in general tbh.
Black wasn't for you then. The game was an over the top celebration of how fricking awesome guns are.
Between the gun sounding like a frag grenade going off with a flash bang of a muzzle report, it goes hard. frick you
It was a mediocre brown and grey console FPS that was brain-dead easy and had shit-for-content. It released the same year as Half Life, Medal of Honor Vanguard, Far Cry, and Prey, which are all significantly better. Ganker hypes it because the majority of you gays weren't born yet or too young to play it and it makes boom boom sounds.
Replayed it very recently, it's still a fun and satisfying shooter, which is all it was meant to be. Didn't know you hated fun that much anon
BLACK is a treasure
Sweet Jesus that's a beast, I need to replay Black again
How was Black Ganker? I always remember hearing that it was a good game and it definitely looks it but its also true that time has completely forgotten about it. As I look at this video right now it also makes me think this is probably how Killzone 1 for PS2 should have been like instead of the shit Guerilla actually did give us. Killzone also has a shotgun that is basically the spas and at least in this level the colors look right at home in a Killzone game.
It was COD4 before COD4. It has some good things (fun levels, level destruction, sounds, missions, challenges, hidden weapons) and some bad stuff (bullet sponges, awful story, too short, needs better ADS). Still, it was ahead of the curve by a lot.
I'm surprised military doesn't use a shotgun that has a levy reload like in GoW. Is pump that much better?
Pump actions are inherently more durable and cheaper to produce while being more reliable. Still love me some 1887 though.
Just make it behave like a shotgun actually behaves, exaggerate if you like but you really don't need to do much to make a shotgun fun and useful. Just please fricking stop giving them an effective range of 4 feet.
If it doesn’t Gib an enemy then it’s a dogshit shotgun
It should have strong sound and an even stronger sense of feedback both from the animation of firing it, and how it affects the enemy you're shooting
I hate how they made it a piece of shit in Gears 2. The first shotgun was pure sex and there was legit satisfaction in blowing people away after wallbouncing.
it doesn't drop off after 5 ft
>What makes a shotgun good?
Shotgun shells. Otherwise it's just a fancy club.
duke3d / quake 2 / doom 2 have some of the best shotguns of all time
FEAR also, webm related
>the way the third guy just fricking evaporates into a red mist
I miss over-the-top gore in a lot of shooters.
It kicks like it's underwater. That looks extremely unsatisfying. A good game gun (and especially a good game shotgun) should kick and shake hard enough that I can almost hear it even in a silent webm.
for me it's the Kingslayer
But that's the Nip Napper
jap zapper
Could still call it a bug zapper.
That'd be China.
This. What makes a weapon good is efficacy. This shotgun was made to do a job, and it did that job.
>manual reload between shots (pump action, break action, anything) with satisfying animation and sounds
>capable of instagibbing at least lowest tier enemies
Auto shotties just don't work for me. Multiple barrels not shooting at once are also annoying.
rhythm.
It depends on the surrounding game. In one game a close quarters only shotgun might feel like shit because you don't have an opportunity to close the distance because your character is a fat frick. In another game the sheer damage it can shit out and the ability to get in and use it might overpower those limitations.
For me, it's the open fortress super shotgun
There's a great video on this by a doomchad
>What makes a shotgun good?
It should instant kill basic enemies and stager non basic enemies with one solid blast to the chest at approx. 10-20ft. This is a no starter a good shotgun MUST have this everything else is just toppings
Deep Rock Galactic's "Warthog" Auto 210 and Jury-Rigged Boomstick feel pretty good to someone who doesn't usually play shooter games (me). Powerful and effective at low to medium range.
It needs to turn the enemy to red mist, or cause their body to rag doll and fly 10’ away. Or both.
When it works as a delete button.
The more barrels it has, the better it is.
You can't even sheer a man in half with an 8 gage. What the frick is this game on about?
The game is about an old cowboy reciting his life in an obviously heightened version of the wild west.
No, obviously Bob Ollinger's shotgun couldn't actually cut a man in half, but the mythology around figures like him makes claims like seems almost believable to those that only hear about such things in secondhand stories. .
It needs to be able to blast Black folk backwards when they start saying things like "finna" and "turnt" and "homie"
>Makes a big boom
>One-shots if you point blank somebody with it
I will now shot your gun.
The shotgun being the main weapon in Gears was an accident. Epic never intended for that to happen.
>shotgun so good it dominates the entirety of the multiplayer scene for 15+ years
>Have to get point blank to 1 shot someone
Halo 1 shotgun blows this out of the water all the while NOT being the best weapon in the game
>Equates garbage balance with a weapon being good.
You're as moronic as the kids who thought the pistol in Halo 1 was perfectly balanced and the multiplayer was GOAT.
yeah that's why I only play horde mode
I remember shotguns being pretty weak in Horde
Imagine being in an era of games where no one was ragging on putting a giant fricking bloody cog right in the center of the screen to represent your health.
meh, better than the red tunnel vision vignettes of other games.
>better than
It's really no better
That game would be pretty frustrating to play without a health indicator, the whole point is to use cover when you're hurt.
I've been saying since Gears 1 that the shotgun should have been a pick-up. It was fascinating to watch in real time how people quickly abandoned the Lancer for the Gnasher in anything but the most long range encounters when the game first came out. And even the the pistol was so strong people just used that instead.
Gears of War 3 had the best balance between the weapons for this reason. Rifles and the pistol were actually used just as much as the gnasher.
I got downs with the lancer all the time because everybody became conditioned to expecting people to run right up to their shotgun. Aiming slightly down and blind firing their knees would make a lot of players panic.
>BOOM chick chick
>BOOM chick chick
the chick part makes it good
the best shotgun in vidya is sadly trapped in a now ded game
What's this?
Abe's custom shotgun
had a great mechanic where the spread was tired to fire rate, so you could go off fast in the target's face and still get decent range with methodical shots
Needs to explode heads like Resident Evil 4 shotgun
What was that tactical Half-Life mod that had been in stalled development for years? The webm had this blue tint and very realistic shotguns
>game has a Spas-12 in it
>the stock is always folded up because they think that's just how it's supposed to look
when exactly 4barrels started popping up? just a few years ago it wasn't a thing
Really wish more games didn't just treat shotguns like the bullets just stop existing past 5 feet. Most of my time in Battlefield was spent basically sniping with slug rounds.
this is the ideal shotgun
all other shotguns are inferior
A good shotgun is vicious
The shotgun in the Trepang2 demo is fricking perfect. The enemies get tossed around by it, even if they don't die immediately. It can dismember them as well, and occasionally they still won't be dead. They flail around screaming while their squad mates swear in fear. And then you find out you can frickin dual wield them and it's even better.
Shotguns are best when you can choose between using buckshot or slugs.
too bad Battlefield's the only FPS that does this that people actually play
meaty animations/sound
Almost every FPS is a "shotgun game" so they have to be balanced unrealistically
How many games actually follow the "average shootout happens 100 to 300 meters away" dynamic that real-life wars tend to revert to
>Shotgun thread
>No mention of Shinzo Abe
have sex
blind moron
Still probably Doom/Doom 2. Pretty much invented and perfected 30 years ago.
ridiculous over the topness:
massive range
launches things
a bunch of gibbing/area damage
?t=2089
Stopping power and sound file
the hook
