This. They, just like every other freakshit race, are simply humans with different skin. OP is a gay.

So humans are freakshit, too? Remember, they're just apes with different skin.

This is something competent writers figure out pretty fricking early.

im not a furry so why would I want anything that's more than a human with animal ears at worst?

You only need monsters if you have no interesting story to tell.

Who are you to dictate the terms of how authors should write or how tabletop gamers should play? You are just one anonymous voice among the multitudes. You have no power to enforce your will on anyone, yourself most of all.

Dragging in a load of fantasy races doesn't actually increase the number of stories you can tell, or the nature and quality of said stories.

Like, at all. In two of the best fantasy series' I've read in the last decade (The First Law, The Powder Mage Trilogy) both authors agreed that their work dramatically improved when they removed the 'fantasy races' in exchange for actual unique cultural development with humans.

Do you happen to have direct quotes from Joe Abercrombie and Brian McClellan to support your assertions?

Take it to Ganker and accept the fact some tabletop games let people choose and deal with other races other than humans. Not denying there aren't good stories with just humans in them, but not many will take them or the novels you mentioned into consideration when playing a game that gives them the non-human option for enemies, armies, or characters to use.

Really, the problem that I've realized with the question "Why not just use humans?" is that it's a trap that can be applied to any established or proposed setting for scrutiny. The conclusion will always be that humans will suffice in place of fantastical races, and I believe that's because those races are ultimately imbued with aspects of our humanity.

It's pretty much a dumb as frick argument anyway because its so poorly defined and open to goalpost moving. Using the same logic you could outright say anything from elves, to dragons, to even sentient rocks and toasters, to demons, the gods and grim reaper are all worthless because uhhh...they're ultimately just humans because I say so!

That’s a bit like saying metaphors are useless because plain speech will always suffice in their place. A sufficient representation of an idea is seldom the most satisfying or valuable. Of course, if you cannot see the value of something imbued with humanity yet without human pretenses, it’s probably better for you to not bother with it at all.

In the end, people have used talking anthropomorphic animals for as long as they've been telling stories. It's sad that terminal coomers have corrupted the whole thing, but then again, almost everything has been corrupted in some form these days.
The way I use animals is still largely symbolic.

    Less morals
    Can harmonize with any race
Can be as good or as evil as you want them to be
Can craft various objects from garbage
They just have that vibe similar to goblins

      THIS.
please PLEASE we absolutely need more room for "WHAT BRAND OF TOOTHPASTE DOES THE LOCAL LORD USE IN YOUR SETTING??" threads that Neckbeardia can farm for patreonbuxx. It is essential that bumpspam threads thrive until autosage. You can't talk about *GASP* fantasy races on /tg/, that's forbidden even though the rules only ban furry porn while spamming and advertisement and trolling and off-topic threads technically warrant a ban, but hey, backseat jannies give a shit about the rules as much as the actual jannies on this board.

Are you trying to imply this ISN'T one of those threads? Because I've got an aircon in Antarctica to sell you if that's the case.

I wouldn't say so, rat threads are just fetish threads. They're often made by crossposters from /trash/.
Generals and coom threads are the last places on /tg/ where there are actual users.

Because playing rats realistically is also playing them against type. The most realistic way to play a rat race is to play them as an intelligent, social, perfumed dandy who washes six times a day.
