What no handcrafted map does to a MF

Has a studio ever commited artistic suicide in a worse manner ?

The open world is all that Bethesda games had going for them.

You think top pic is what vanilla Skyrim looks like? Have you ever played it

The artistic direction remains the same, even if an ENB increases contrast and shadows.
Think of it this way, would any sort of graphic overhaul make the bottom Starfield's sterile setting better than Skyrim's 12 years old interiors, vanilla or otherwise ?
        >Picrel, Starfield's luxury penthouses don't come with windows

      Hold the frick on.
Starfield is shit, yes, but their handcrafted shit is top tier.
That medical spaceship you've posted has multiple wings, all fleshed out with extreme detail. The game just does frick all with it.
Same with space ship sellers, their bays are huge and full with tiny detail.

Op is right and starfield is kind of sad for that reason. The handcrafted shit is better then anything they have ever made, but the base gameplay and the other 95% shit that isnt hand made ruin the game

proceduralism is a trend in the cg field. devs think it's cool to have something be infinitely repeating but nothing really beats the handcrafted approach

With modern Neural Network models I believe something quite interesting can be done on procedurally generated content and generally speaking AI generated content, especially for something like Starfield : terrain (planets), donjons & interior, more advanced quests (at least their script), a bit of spoiler but even "New Game +" content.

Hell nowadays we're approaching voice generation AI, we're quite near "mildly interesting" infinite content for game like this, but here we are with the blandest of all things.

I really don't get the "25 years in the waiting for the technology to be ready", for non interactives NPC, generic planets and loading screen transport.

They could probably have done this game with the original Morrowind engine (without physics), and it would probably be way more fun 'cause then they would have to write probably.

Bethesda is riding the waves of their past glory, I'll even say Skyyyyyyyyyyyyrim was a hit only because it reach the apex of internet meme culture and the social media boom which has taken society and alter how we consume video games.

      They're done.

Have they never heard of the term quality over quantity? It's been repeated so many times in the gaming industry yet no one learns.

    >open world is all that Bethesda games had going
That's just what the Fallout generation of Bethesda fans thinks. Daggerfall was even more empty and procedural than Starfield and people liked it because they knew how to roleplay. New fans aren't about roleplaying, they're about looting and shooting

And it was even worse than Shartfield.
      >people liked it because they knew how to roleplay
No, people liked it because it was the only open world RPG at the time.

The Fallout generation didn't play looter shooters. They hadn't been invented yet.

Starfield is a game that looks like it wasn't worked on by actual human beings. It's devoid of love or spirit.

Fun fact: most soulful game Mount and Blade uses procedure generated combat maps. Let it sink in for while.

Procgen is not a bad thing. It's just most devs use it in the most lazy and uninspired ways imaginable.

          Anonymous

Procgen should be used as a tool to allow for better handcrafted content.
For example, most devs nowadays procgen terrain elevation, which is waaay better than doing it by hand if any of you had the pleasure of using some very popular circa 2005 terrain generating software.
Same for flora, or out of bounds assets for padding. But procgen'ing your whole map ? Nope...

warbands at least had the decency to occasionally have the worst fricking spawns and mountains imaginable. There is nothing better than randomly generated rivers and mountain tops that completely frick over ai.
Starfield just all felt like the same slop, which was infinitely more tedious with the exploration focus

Skyrim was mostly procedurally generated like most open world games

      no it wasn't

        ...what ?

Yes it was, they use procedural generation to create the terrain, and then add some handcrafted cities and shit on top
Literally the same thing as starfield. Except in starfield there is a larger amoint of proc gen areas

Procgenning the terrain and then physically morphing and adding to it by hand is fine.

Its the same as starfield. They changed since locations, not all of them. Its not handcrafted.

Okay, this is an industry standard practice. Generating an elevation map and then adding handcrafteed assets and textures to it is not the same as Starfield's procgen, especially since Skyrim also has customized elevation maps most of the time anyway.

            >is not the same as Starfield's procgen
            How is it not?
They are doing the same thing
The only difference is that starfield has a larger amount of proc gen terrain because of the space setting / filler planets

The Fallout generation didn't play looter shooters. They hadn't been invented yet.

the fallout 4 gameplay loop is all about looting and shooting.

Overworlds are one thing, but Bethesda's loading screen simulator is another.
