Don't you have to actually summon Diablo and kill him with key items that you need to find through thousands of bodies and dead demons

You summon him in Act 4 by killing his lieutenants and opening the 5 seals.
There's Uber Diablo that you can get an Annihilus Charm from beating by the entire server selling SOJs, and then there's another Uber version of all 3 Prime Evils.

Auto battlers/idlers are probably ten times worse than diablo two. It's successor Path of exile on the other hand turned into an online casino coated as an arpg though.
So, what's the appeal of this game again?

Minimal input? Like number of buttons? The buttons you press are few but the functions of the buttons are so varied that it is not simple. Wasd diablo likes with full action bars is a large amount of buttons. Is this one of those bottom of the barrel trolls pretending to be moronic and mistaking the plan as being clever? I hope so. Either way its sad, please do a dopamine detox. You are disappointing yourself deep down.
diablo has quite a lot of gameplay, it's in the numbers. the breakpoints in d2 were good game design. the feeling of both d1 and d2 were extremely good; visceral control response is one of the *primary* things that makes a video game a video game.
