What the frick? Just play the PS1 games I've never heard of any hacks why do you want to play some shitty fan game instead of the actual game.
morons are trying to do this with Earthbound too and every change I see is awful

Not too far with modding the games.
Just asking any bugfixes I should install.
I know there's that Spirit Bug Fix for VII, and the Enable MiniMog & ChocoBocle mod for VIII, but I don't know what else.

So, I found a ROM hack to enable deleted scenes for FF9, and also a ROM hack that makes it easier to obtain Excalibur II.

            Bugfixes, I said.
I did see a fix for the Thunder Slash bug for IX.
And a way to get the PocketStation items without the PocketStation in FF8 (just like the remaster many years later).
I don't want cheats, but I want bugfixes (and maybe an improved translation for VII as well).

I found the Beacause fan translation for PC.

DON'T play that, it's not a 'retranslation' at all, just schizo fanfic shit. You want the 'Steam' one, which has also been ported to PS1, as that just fixes typos and clears up wording on a few lines.

The Qhimm forums are where most of the project's development took place, at least one of the thread's still up (https://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=11867.0) I don't have any of the screencaps on hand but I knows there's other /vr/anons that do. I can give you the cliffnotes though:
                >Burke/DLPB starts an ambitious project to completely retranslate the game
                >As development continues, it becomes evident what he's actually doing is rewriting the script, scrapping all prior FF naming conventions with original ones and showcasing the OC donut steel he's replacing Cait Sith with, Iscar
                >His Japanese knowledge is nil, instead he has a "japanese aquaintance" he would send his lines over to for 'checking'. I would bet my house that this never happened once.
                >He gets in constant fights with the members there, rightfully calling him out, can't take any criticism at all and eventually gets banned.
                >Eventually he resurfaces and continues work, this time begrudgingly leaving Cait in the game, but totally sabotaging him with a nigh-illegible Scottish accent writing him even more like a moron. Barett gets similar assasination treatment. Shortly after Luksy joins the project as 'main translator' but was probably just a tard wrangler and a way to placate people calling out his method, the "translation" quality remains the same.
                >At this point "Beacause" has so much notoriety and memes attached to it they merge it into the Reunion mod, hoping people forget the absolute joke it was. It goes by the 'Reunion' translation now but rest assured despite all the updates it's the same bullshit underneath.
It's come up a few times on here over the years also so you can probably find more detailed accounts from tbharchive. But the tl;dr is it's an autism patch, if you know even some basic JP and go line by line you can see Burke basically made it all up. He wanted a FF7 with more swearing and more edginess so he made it happen.

This guy is something... Thanks for the info anon

I didn't realize it actually changed things that much, the main thing I remember from playing it is some of the more infamous typos getting fixed. But yeah, fricking odd change, guess they wanted Cloud's characterisation closer to the edgelord he's been written as post-FF7.

Yeah it makes no sense, definitely looks like whoever did the "retranslation" didn't even look at the Jap script and was only concerned with "fixing" the original's mistakes, so they made even more shit up as they went along.

                Anonymous

Cherrypicked screenshots aside, it seems pretty much a wash between the two as to which is closer to the Japanese script in any given scenario. The PC version is closer in many cited examples, and also just plain fixes mistranslations and typos from the PS1 version. The fact remains that there is no "perfect" translation of FF7, given the Beacause script contains more ludicrous headcanon than either official effort.

I was gonna say Ever Crisis was a think but they more than likely fricked with that script just like they did the remake, not that anyone would care since they'll still gobble the slop up even if they knew.

Seems like a very short list of bugfix options:
        https://www.romhacking.net/?page=hacks&game=869

        Spirit Fix
        Cosmetic shop fix
W-Item Fix (waste of time, just don't abuse glitch if you care)
Gil Up fix (you probably wouldn't even notice this)

          Anonymous

This is ok but w item glitch is part of the completion runs. I’ve been planning on doing a difficulty and bug fix. Also adding over 9999 attack damage shown and over 999 magic and over 9999 health (It’s been done partially already). Keeping w item, fixing spirt, making monsters harder on disc2, then again even harder on disc 3, but I don’t want to make it kaizo just more tension filled… oh and putting 32 1/32 soldier figures hidden around the world.

            Also magic defense fix

      Anonymous

Hacks that fix bugs and improve performance are based. Like hacks that make evade% etc work properly in FF6, or the hack that fixes the block-hitting physics programming error in Super Mario All-Stars.

        Anonymous

The thing about these kinds of fixes is that the rest of the game has to be adjusted to compensate. Devs would have been aware when testing the game that magic defense wasn't working as intended. Maybe they didn't know why it wasn't working or have the time to fix it if they did, but it would have been clear to them when magic was doing more damage than it was supposed to. So they'd come up with band-aid solutions like just lowering the overall magic damage or stats on enemies. So if you fix the magic defense for this now-weakened magic damage you're unintentionally nerfing magic damage across the board alongside it.

There weren't as many major problems by this era. FF1 had a totally broken stat. FF6 had censorship and translation issues that actually effect its story and characters. FF7 has people that didn't read the full description of the scorpion tail and this guy are sick. A fan could put the cut content into the game, but who knows what really was intended and you have the rabbit hole of my theory on the Aerith revival hints in the game but the game itself is kinda fine.

FF8 could use a translation difference as from my understanding Squall actually says more stuff in the JP version instead of whatever. But the game's story is still a hole filled clusterfrick that wouldn't be fixed by that. Its a game you admire for what it tried to do more than what it actually did.

FF9 is kind of fine to my memory. Maybe use an emulator with a speed up feature because it drags ass at plenty of points but so does 8.

    FF7: Steam script
FF8: Not playing it to begin with
FF9: People complain about the battle cameras on PS1, it didn't bother me and I have bloody ADHD, but if you can't put up with it I would recommend the PC version with Moguri. Otherwise, there isn't really an extensive modding scene for the PS1 version

In FF 9 I seem to remember the ATB gauge took longer to fill up than in the previous games. This made it more tedious. I haven't tested it myself, but there's an ATB speedup patch. Other than that I would try using some jokered no random battle codes where you can toggle battles on an off.

Bumping because I also want to know a good retranslation. Not the PC version since that fixes the spelling mistakes but is otherwise somehow even less accurate, nor the fanfiction bullshit that removes Cait Sith or whatever.

Your only real options are the one by the guy with the Cait Sith hateboner or the one in the New Threat mod.

Beacause never actually got around to removing the cat and replacing him with his fanfiction character. He also ignores the entire English franchise convention when it comes to naming schemes, so spells and creatures and such were translated to whatever the frick he felt like instead of their familiar names. It's really stupid.

New Threat is mostly a gameplay focused mod but it does retranslate things in the game. It also makes some changes though to accommodate its new gameplay features. I think there's a version that only includes the retranslation with none of the gameplay changes. I have no clue if the translation is actually good or not.

It tried to but he was talked out of it late in production, instead he just sabotaged him and made his dialogue near-unreadable. Beacause is a clusterfrick one post can't really do justice but the gist of it is the author doesn't speak Japanese and it's actually a rewrite that caters to his biases.

Autism, trannilators or otherwise, this is why translators need to be put on a tight leash with constant eyes on them. This is just fricking embarrassing.

It makes clear that it should be a prerequisite to KNOW the language you're translating from, if nothing else. The sheer amount of autism patches for FF6 is nuts too, just people cherrypicking lines from both official translations and throwing them into a blender to create a 'perfect' translation that they wouldn't have a fricking clue how to assess anyway because they don't speak Japanese.

I know many of the mistranslations in the original game were what confused international players.
The Steam translation is more or less the same as the PS1 version, except a bit more censored ("shit" and "wench" were censored on Steam, but not PS1), and some more glaring typos were fixed.

all the game needs is a difficulty mod, because ff7 becomes so fricking easy by the end ur just autoing everything, magic falls off hard, summons fall off hard (except KOTR)

Some truth in that. Sadly some mods over do it. I have done a run of the original PS1 game where I ran from encounters that weren't needed for drops or skills and avoided doing side content until the end. It actually got a great deal more challenging then. The game has a lot of side content and reasons to battle, but if you do it too much you over level a lot. Probably why FF8 ended up with scaling that had the opposite problem.

No it isn't. Literally the only acceptable ways to play these games in 2023 is:

FF7 with New Threat Type A
FF8 with who cares shit game
    FF9 with Alternate Fantasy

Plus whatever graphical mods you like (Moguri Mod, widescreen, 60fps, etc). Simple as.
