He told me that yes, if we play together in a discord channel there was a 100% chance I'd end up listening to him talk to someone else, and so he said we could do it over steam instead.

Audio quality is bad, you have to fine tune the sensibility, sometimes the call sound will just bug out and you will have the ring tone blasting even if you've already answered and you need to restart Steam to get rid of it. It also takes considerably more broadband than discord for some reason.

Any time I make friends with someone over a game they quickly tell me to join their discord and something similar happens. Just 6 random people all never shutting the frick up. Can't stand it, and people take offense if I say i'd rather just communicate through in game voip.
Steam chat has failed on me so many times though, never again. I'd rather use Battlenet chat or something if I was going to actively not use discord.

The render is local, not server based, so it doesn't matter because you're still just rendering one viewpoint on your computer/console.
Also, the sync is sometimes very fricked between people and the game looks like shit because low spec PCs need to load in as fast as super pc people as the cutscenes cut to gameplay with everyone at the same time.
The arkham games do the classic setting everything at night trick to make it look better. Gets boring after a while

Devs have so much knowledge and resources readily available to them which in turn has made them lazy. You would think this would pave a huge leap forward (and it should) but it does the polar opposite.
Again, teams are too big so half the devs aren’t held accountable for their bullshit. On a team of 700 most can just work from home do the bare minimum and punch the clock. Not possible to do with a team of 20-40

There's other reasons, like the talent bleed in the industry, but it's mostly due to the Unreal engine (and to a lesser extent Unity before they blew themselves up) become so widespread for development over the last decade.
Arkham Knight is literally modified Unreal Engine 3. The engine isn't the issue. It's never been the issue. It's that the industry can't define it's aesthetics; and has, like, 100 different artists churning out buildings, props, skyboxes, etc., and they're all in different styles and mashed together. A lot of the art departments are no long on the same page is what the problem is.

Devs now don't bother to heavily mod the engines, they just use stock UE4/5 with their own assets. That's why most of the games released recently that use them have the same shitty baked in lighting, the same shitty floaty movement, the same texture loading issues, etc etc.
Not really, the jump to UE that you're describing already happened with 3, and they weren't as heavily modified as you think they were. The majority of UE3 titles had the same "burnt in" lighting look and it was heavily memed on for that reason in its later years. Even games with a unique art style like Borderlands had it. UE actually got better with looking less samey. I'm extremely glad we're past the UE3 era.
This, so much this. People are too harsh on developers. We need to support projects like Suicide Squad. In fact I bought my copy today and have played for 12 hours straight already. It's my GOTY. I can't wait for the DLC!
There's lots of factors, but a big one is the push for 4K and 60fps minimum.
Those 7th games were struggling to do 720p/30fps on consoles, and even 8th gen struggled to do 1080p/30fps or 720p/60fps.
If you wanna double the framerate and/or resolution you have to sacrifice fidelity elsewhere.
Graphics are the most technically impressive they've ever been, at least if you ignore performance. The issue, as others have mentioned, is artistic direction. We're in the middle of another period of artistic decline for AAA and AA games, but instead of "brown & bloom" it's >low saturation >low contrast >green tint
Look at any RE Engine game (MHR, SF6, REmakes), Hogwarts Legacy, or an especially bad example like Soulframe. It's the "Unreal" look, even when the game isn't on Unreal Engine.
Even Elden Ring, a game with otherwise fantastic art direction, occasionally looks like this. It's a soulless style that's optimized for long periods of play, and I'm sick of seeing it. God bless games like Lords of the Fallen that have built-in color settings, but everything else you have to fix yourself.

There’s nothing wrong with photorealism when it’s well executed. That man, Jean Renoir, was talking about his own folly. He lamented the fact that he figured out a way to do indoor shots without studio lighting, and therefore took away some of the magic of cinema.
The whole thing is actually a really good watch, and he even explains the current phenomenon of people shitting on games with "bad graphics" because once you progress, you cannot go back.
Those examples still bend realism to suit their artistic needs. It's called fantastic reality/enhanced realism. Unlike those who say, just slap on generic shaders with generic textures with generic lighting which are expected to behave in a single and very specific way.

Lots of problems. Generally there's no artistic vision anymore and companies go with the safest bet possible. The safest bet possible is striking a balance between realism and readability; that always tends to look like plastic unreal garbage.

When a game has to render four viewpoints at the same time, it does.
The render is local, not server based, so it doesn't matter because you're still just rendering one viewpoint on your computer/console.
Also, the sync is sometimes very fricked between people and the game looks like shit because low spec PCs need to load in as fast as super pc people as the cutscenes cut to gameplay with everyone at the same time.

Devs have so much knowledge and resources readily available to them which in turn has made them lazy. There's other reasons, like the talent bleed in the industry, but it's mostly due to the Unreal engine (and to a lesser extent Unity before they blew themselves up) become so widespread for development over the last decade.
Arkham Knight is literally modified Unreal Engine 3. The engine isn't the issue. It's never been the issue. It's that the industry can't define it's aesthetics; and has, like, 100 different artists churning out buildings, props, skyboxes, etc., and they're all in different styles and mashed together. A lot of the art departments are no long on the same page is what the problem is.

Not really, the jump to UE that you're describing already happened with 3, and they weren't as heavily modified as you think they were. The majority of UE3 titles had the same "burnt in" lighting look and it was heavily memed on for that reason in its later years. Even games with a unique art style like Borderlands had it. UE actually got better with looking less samey. I'm extremely glad we're past the UE3 era.

There's lots of factors, but a big one is the push for 4K and 60fps minimum.
Those 7th games were struggling to do 720p/30fps on consoles, and even 8th gen struggled to do 1080p/30fps or 720p/60fps.
If you wanna double the framerate and/or resolution you have to sacrifice fidelity elsewhere.
Graphics are the most technically impressive they've ever been, at least if you ignore performance. The issue, as others have mentioned, is artistic direction. We're in the middle of another period of artistic decline for AAA and AA games, but instead of "brown & bloom" it's

God bless games like Lords of the Fallen that have built-in color settings, but everything else you have to fix yourself.

Those examples still bend realism to suit their artistic needs. It's called fantastic reality/enhanced realism. Unlike those who say, just slap on generic shaders with generic textures with generic lighting which are expected to behave in a single and very specific way.

Arkham was built on Unreal 3, SS was built on Unreal 4, and UE4 has baked in post-processing effects and HDR. It's why the Lighting is god awful.
You realize that you can control those effects in UE4 and up? There's also a fundamental difference in how scenes are lit in UE3 vs UE4. It's part of the reason why UE3 games usually looked the way they did.

People are too hung up on city visuals when you need look no further than combat screen overlays. How in the FRICK someone thought was acceptable is beyond me. It really does look aimed at someone with ADHD who needs constant visuals stimulation.
Because of problems with console draw distance, developers think they can make up for it with overdone atmospheric scattering (and gives illusions of scale, when in real life the effect is only really noticeable over really long distance), which have a side effect of making closer objects look like they are covered in pea soup fog
The "PS5 generation" isn't real, it's just a pro version of the previous one but games won't necessarily look better. I also think Tenkaichi 4 looks worse than Kakarot and Fighterz

Who knows, now that AI exists, but while you could quickly shit out 3d models you couldn't find many people capable of doing DB Fighterz animated sprites. FighterZ doesn't use sprites, which is what makes it even more impressive. It's all 3D with an anime art style.
