Also you can side with the Frog Prince and free him so that "he" can go fight the Gith Queen (and instantly job hard because she literally can cast Wish at will with no consequences because she's been eating the souls of any Gith that gets strong enough to fuel her magic"

I could tell you but I don’t want to spoil people. I just made it to baldurs gate and the preceding immediate events were very difficult, I’m becoming very atttached to the characters. The dream waifu reveal was kinda rough, and now I’m kind of “all in.” This game is clearly the best game of the year, and it’s absolutely one of the greatest games of all time.

Is it really the best game of all time? The only true rpg I've ever played was New Vegas. How does it stack up to that?
That game is amazing because of the freedom you have to resolve situations and tailor your story. This game does it too. Does it occasionally stutter? Yeah, but I imagine its the DM behind the screen hand waiving a plot element or something.
Are there any cool characters to get invested in though? It's hard to care about all the ways you can interact with the characters and world around you if the characters aren't any good.
So, I’m doing dark urge evil playthrough and don’t have most of the characters. Gale lost his hand, karlach and Wyll refused to join me, and the others? I never even met them. I’m still learning their backstory and haven’t quite made it to baldurs gate yet (outside the city). Minthara is a great character, she’s very complex and lawful evil. She’s actually directly opposed to my chaotic evil dark urge.
What's minthara's deal?
She’s incredibly pragmatic. It’s a series of escalating issues trying to keep her from being executed at the moon tower, then you need to help her get revenge on the cultists for trying to kill her. When she realizes what’s really going on she plots to take over the curl and then the world. She loves murder and killing but hates chaos, she is supremely against my chaotic evil dark urge. I just think she’s an interesting character.
she also shit talks Shar to the main character, but when you get to shars temple, you can help Shadowheart become a chosen of shar. Minthara is right there, encouraging Shadowheart to complete the ritual and honor her goddess. Then she talks about what an honor is to have one of shars justiciars in their party, with their legendary power.
I shoved her into a chasm in the goblin camp lol.

Like what? Larian's world building has always been steeped in about five layers of something between irony, self awareness, self indulgence, and self deprecation. I've never been able to immerse myself in larian's games because they end up feeling like a writer's rendition of an RPG world as an RPG world, rather than a writer's rendition of a fantasy world as an RPG world.
Not by a long shot, but it's pretty fun, and actually worth the full price for once.

Running with the same party, really enjoying it. People keep hating on Astarian but I don't understand. His VA is incredible and he's such a little shit sometimes. Probably one of my favorite characters to just have chime in about stuff.

the mindflayers are just over arching villains, there's plenty of other villains with differing less omnicidal goals
As for the mind flayers, they are literally the apex of evolution from the far future, their species has survived to the heat death of the universe and they travelled back in time to try and rebuild and prevent it. As far as they're concerned you and everything else are just animals to be domesticated, like monkeys or dogs.
Also their entire society is a pyramid scheme run by giant psychic brains who dominate everyone else like the mind flayers dominate thralls.

much of the overarching plot revolves around finding out WHAT the frick is going on so that would be spoilers.
You wake up on a flying squid ship kidnapped by mind flayers. they plant a worm in your brain that should be turning you into one of them. For some reason though your symptoms are arrested and you're developing strange mind powers.
You escape the ship after githyanki riding red dragons attack it, survive the crash landing because of aforementioned mind powers, and have to figure out how to get the worm out of your brain while dealing with all the other shit going on.

Lots of precipices, but surprisingly few and short-lasting surfaces. Encounters mostly aren't based on barrel usage, but you can still cheese with those.

The cult leadership enslave the mindflayers. The enslaved mindflayers infect valuable cultists, who in turn use their psychic abilities to brainwash all the other cultists. Only the top brass knows about the brainwashing and mindflayers.
The irony is that the more you fight against the cult, the weaker their grip on the super-powered mindflayers becomes. The game's about saving the world by single-handedly bringing it to a brink of destruction.
Why do people join this cult?
Because the psychic abilities of infected cultists are too strong for ordinary people to be resisted. Nobody actually joins them out of free will.

you have more spell variety overall and generally at an earlier level. this is more important in the table top than video game versions. also since you have to prepare a set amount of spells you kind of have to know what you are going to face in advance to really get the most out of wizards expanded kit so its better for second playthroughs imo
I'm role playing as a magic hungry wizard so all my gold just goes towards feeding my player character scrolls to learn. I just like abusing quick saves and swapping around my spells every couple of encounters.

Warlocks are combat magic only. They don't get many spells, but it's usually shit like fireballs and magic missile. Sorceror's have a ton more spells like buffs and things that are useful outside of combat. Basically, the former is streamlined and focused to be good in a fight while the latter has much broader utility but requires you to be creative.

It's similar to BG1 in terms of trickling in the story.
All you know for a long time is that space squids inserted a tadpole into your brain, and you'll violently turn into them at some point unless you can figure out a way to heal yourself, but you slowly learn that it's affecting you differently for some reason.
BG1 started you off with a mystery of "some large powerful armored figure is hunting specific people for some reason, and you're one of those people being hunted for some reason. You find allies to help you unravel what this is all about.
All throughout, you're performing "fantasy adventure"-type stuff as you see fit, or straight mainlining the main story if you want.
The appeal is the slow drip, and being able to make your own character to slowly live in that setting and live in that story. That's largely what D&D in general is.

The setting/collection of characters seems super disjointed and not cohesive at all. I thought the same thing about Divinity. Why is the vampire dude plastered front and center in every single ad and cover? He is supposedly just another companion, yet this random guy that honestly seems a bit annoying is just front and center... just because okay?!!! I don't understand. What do anons think of the game? I like Pillars of Eternity/Baldur's Gate because it feels like a very consistent fantasy world that makes sense. If you keep with him in your party until the point closer to the endgame, he suicide bombs himself and your entire party in order to destroy the big bad guy then dooms the whole place you're in to get infested by the remaining tadpoles and ilithids since you didn't get rid of them yet.
He actually lies about having a mindflayer tadpole in him too. He doesn't have one, just pretends to. His entire mission is to quite literally suicide bomb himself at the end for the "greater good".

It's meant to imply that's when the tadpoles from all those infected people would turn everyone into mindflayers once they reach full gestation and then invade the realm but that doesn't happen because of some reasons in the plot where someone with great power is keeping you and the others safe from turning into mindflayers for plot reasons, but Gael doesn't know that yet when he made the spectral thing that speaks for him.

Why do you think you have a say of whats happening if the head druid is back? You can actually sequence jump and bring Halsin back to the druid grove, and the refugees will eventually leave whether or not the goblins are dealt with. If they leave of their own volition you lose Wyll and Karlach as companions, so clearly this path is designed for.
